Ubuntu Multimedia :: Flash Performance Worse Than Windows On Intel915gm
Aug 3, 2010
I'm using Lucid and there is a noticeable drop in performance when using flash under Ubuntu. Video playback appears to be much more choppy than in windows. The driver I'm using according to an xorg config file I made was just "intel." Are there any options I can configure to get it to run more smoothly? The computer itself is a laptop - Toshiba Satellite m45-s331. I tried using gnash and others but they are even worse than the Adobe flash.

I posted a few weeks ago about Flash performance in Firefox vs. Google Chrome. Thanks to all those who responded. I finally figured out the problem in Firefox, it was Compiz desktop effects. With effects off, flash in Firefox is just as fast as Google Chrome. I am not sure why Compiz only affects Firefox Flash, but apparently Chrome is not affected. I know there are a lot of posts about this topic, so before driving yourself nuts installing FlashAid, and running terminal commands, try disabling desktop effects first.

I recently switched from my integrated GPU (i5-650 Clarkdale) to a brand new nvidia GT520 but now my HDMI output is worse than my VGA : bright colors are completely saturated. I noticed that switching the HDMI colorspace from "full" to "limited" (using nvidia-settings) somewhat reduce the effects but doesn't solve it. I even tried to play with my monitor setting, with no luck. This was NOT the case previously. I'm using the latest nvidia-drivers and my 2 monitors are the same reference (LG 22" LCD - W2261VP-PF). Ubuntu 11.04.

Why does flash perform so badly in fullscreen mode but not when out of it? [URL]... that is a 1080p flash video that runs completely smoothly for me when not in fullscreen mode, but after entering it the frame rate drops significantly. Am I the only one affected by this? Is there a way to fix this?
My computer is 64 bit and is running flash 10.42

I am having very slow performance from ubuntu 9.10 - gnome - kernel 2.6.31-15-generic when copying files to usb flashdisk drive. It starts very fast(3-4MB/S) but after a while it slows down to speed of 200,300KB/S.

I have an ATI Radeon HD4850, and I use the proprietary ATI fglrx drivers. However, when I try and full screen a flash video, my performance hits the fan. It's choppy, and even takes 5+ seconds to even get me back out of full screen to "recover". I mean, in windows I can play full screen 1920x1200 games on decent settings. So I doubt flash is too much to ask. I'm aware that ATI is basically the -worst- when it comes to linux drivers (Hence why my next card will be an Nvidia card. ) but I was wondering if there's anyway to fix this until that (glorious) day comes. As far as versions go, I use the latest Firefox, my flash plugin is:
Code:
File: libflashplayer.so
Version:
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r42
and my fglrx is
Code:
matt@matt:~> fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
OpenGL version string: 3.2.9551 Compatibility Profile Context

I installed SalixOS on my laptop just to play with when I'm bored. My laptop is nothing special, it's a couple of years old has a pentium dual core t2390 at 1.86Ghz and 3 GB ddr2 RAM with Intel video.
I then have a beast i7 920 clocked to 3331Mhz 6GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GT220. Full screen ..... at 720p is fine unless I move the mouse, then the whole picture freezes. Persistant mouse movement will freeze the screen for a few minutes. This machine runs both slack64 current and slack13 32 bits.
The slack box does much better with 32 bit flash than 64, but it still doesn't do nearly as well as the laptop.
With Salix and Slack being so close to each other supposedly I can't figure out why the hardware seems to be irrelevant. The only thing I can think of would be the video codecs installed by Salix, whereas I built a bunch of codecs myself for Slack.

Ubuntu V 10.10, vs Windows 2k server. Comparable hardware. From a XP workstation on the same gigabit switch. Share uses Samba.
I start a copy of a 2GB file from the workstation to my Linux share, and then to my W2k server. The copy to the w2k machine finishes in less than 60 seconds, the copy to my Linux machine takes 4 minutes. I am a windows veteran, but a Linux newbie. Are there settings I should look at, or something faster than Samba?

I dual-boot XP and Ubuntu, and I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 to a freshly formatted hard drive.
However, it put GRUB on the wrong drive (The XP drive, not the Ubuntu drive) and so I had to restore XP's Bootloader then formatted and reinstalled Ubuntu again
(Yes there was probably an easier way to do that, but my way would have been quicker than trying to find out an easier way and I already knew it would work)
The problem now is that my graphics card performance doesn't seem as good on the 2nd install as it did on the first - windows won't animate when minimising etc and there's some lag earing when the login screen comes up.
I installed exactly the same way both times and yet it does something different both times.
How can I fix this problemperformance issue?

I've used an older version of ubuntu before, when it was brown and orange. I ran it off of a 8 gb solid state express card. Used it for about a month, didn't like it because I didn't know how to install anything and because it was slow (because ran off of a express card). Now, I'm looking to try ubuntu 10.10 on a partition of a main hard drive, specifically on the chrome os laptop when it comes out.
Now, I've read up that the battery life for ubuntu is mysteriously worse than on what would run a mac or a windows. This battery life issue is driving me away from ubuntu. How much battery life would I actually get for ubuntu if my battery life lasts 4 hours running a windows 7? And how much hard drive space do I need to partition to install ubuntu?

I have recently upgraded to 11.04 and am running the Classic interface as I don't like Unity. However, I have noticed so far two areas where this Classic version has gone backwards from the default Gnome in 10.10 and earlier.I can't rearrange window buttons on the Window list, nor can I drag-and-drop say FLAC files onto the button for "Movie Player" any more -they end up pinned on the panel! How can I get back the ability to drag window buttons around and and turn off the annoying pinning feature and get drag-and-drop back?

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 beta. After installing the flash player, everything worked fine. I installed a few updates, as well as Ubuntu Stuido from the synaptic package manager, and when I rebooted, I can't hear any sound from flash content displayed in Fire Fox. All other sounds work fine, and I made another user account as a test, and that account has full audio functionality, including flash...

My only unhappiness with 11.04, after I installed in on 4/28 on my Eee PC 1000H (dual booting with Windows XP), is that the range of wireless reception in my house, from exactly the same spot as before, has worsened considerably. No problem when running Windows (which I'd rather not do, of course). Could the upgrade have installed a new driver for the wireless hardware that isn't as good as the previous one?

You know that glitch where your monitor doesn't come back after switching off for power saving? That's gotten WAY worse since switching to Lucid. It used to happen every other day or so, now it happens 2-3 times a day. Songbird used to keep it from switching off on Karmic, but Songbird doesn't work on Lucid so that's out the window.
Also: as similar error happened when restarting after the glitch happened this latest time. Ubuntu started running its routine disk check and I hit C to skip it. The screen went down like it does in the Monitor Sleep glitch. I reset again, it did it again. Eventually, I just let it do the check. This has NEVER happened before.

I have a custom built PC with a AMD 9650 2.3ghz quad core, 4gig of ram, nvidia geforce 9500gt graphics card. With windows 7 my movies look immaculate but I want that from Linux. My first problem consists of lines in my players. To test out the performance I am playing Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Complete Blu-Ray. The video file has been ripped and placed on the HD. MPlayer has lines everywhere, VLC is very good but line every once in a while, XBMC plays bout as well as VLC. The first part that confused me was how MPlayer was worse off. I have followed all the stickies and this is a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10. The Second problem I am having is getting my onboard audio to work. My board comes with 8 channel audio support but my 2 side/back speakers wont work. I have messed with the application settings and the actual settings in Sound Preferences.
Here is a link to my board specs

I'm trying to get the best performance/quality on my my 10.04 box and i have a few questions regarding 'sync to vblank'. My first question : I see 'sync to vblank' in 3 different locations.
- In compiz display settings
- In NVidia XVideo settings
- In NVidia OpenGLX settings
What is the difference between the 3 ?
Second question : I used to have problems watching movies where the picture seemed to be cut in half ( i'm not a native english speaker so i don't know the technical term). After reading some forums, i enabled sync to vblank everywhere i saw it. That solved the movie problem. But maybe that was overkill ?
So i did some benchmarking and noticed the following :
When i disable 'sync to vblank' in compiz my compiz benchmark drops from 60 to 30. But then my movies look worse. When i disable 'sync to vblank' in NVidia OpenGlx my GlxGears framerate jumps from 300 to 36000.I didn't notice anything when changing vsync in the NVidia XVideo setting. System specs below.
Ubuntu 10.04 64b
Nvidia GT 230 1536MB
NVIDIA Driver Version : 195.36.24

I've installed an older Intel/Compaq Evo machine with a single core 2.0 Ghz. processor and 2 GB of DDR ram in our livingroom, for movie viewing purposes. I'm intentionally using Xubuntu 11.04 without 3D to keep the used resources down to a minimum. There are no 3D games on this machine either since I'm using it strictly for watching movies on our TV. The graphic card is integrated with the 845 chipset/mainboard. It does receive up to 64 MB of Ram though which is drawn directly from the onboard 2 GB DDR. The following links provided me some linux related info. about this chip but I honestly have no idea how to use that since the intellinux site is set up horribly (IMO).
[URL]So with a 2 Ghz. processor, low resources, 2 GB of DDR, of which 64 MB is dedicated to the graphic chip, I figured that playing movies wouldn't be a problem .. and it's almost not. I can play wmf, avi, mp3, and other codecs without any problem at all. Even BlueRay works fine as long as they're AVIs. But as soon as I try to play an MP4 movie the experience gets very unpleasant. No crashes, just endless stuttering and sometimes lack of audio. Is there perhaps some way that I can improve that performance permanently without buying another graphic card? The machine is an ultra slim form factor so I can't even add a narrow format card to it.I'm stuck with the embedded 64 MB chip but I'm hoping that someone here can help me to get the most out of it

I'm trying to find out which one is safer when it comes down to recovery process in case of a drive failure
A RAID5 created in mdadm
or
a Stripe RAID created on pure LVM
the RAID is purely for data storage for a SAMBA server, the OS will reside on its own drive.Ideally the RAID physical hard drives should be re-build on another machine in case of catastrophic server failure (mother board problem, or any other random problems as an example)I can't decide which of the 2 software RAID method is more convenient and safest, don't care about performance, it'll be a dedicated server for mass storage, it's going to mirror other 3 file servers on fakeRAIDs (dmraid), it's simply a redundant backup for the backups
The important goal here is portability.from what've read it appears that LVM might be more portable?but according to some dated (2009) info the mdadm seems to be a bit buggy when it comes to rebuilding the array, yet LVM doesn't appear that safe either which one would you pick for ease to rebuild on catastrophic failures?

I have A dell vostro v13. I am have installed LMMS which runs ok if I put minimal demands on it but if I start putting to many demands on it like running More then three Zynaddsubfx plugins or multiple sample players the cpu moniter goes into the red and it starts to sound bad and slow down a great deal. I know a small laptop is probably not the best choice to run a DAW on unless it has a good processor but this is the only computer I currently have and I really like LMMS. Is there any way I can get more performance out of my computer? I looked a little into overclocking but dell Bios Does not allow for this. Is there any tricks that I can do to get LMMS to perform better given the limitations of my system?

my friend has a dell inspiron 4600 desktop that we recently install ubuntu on to replace windows xp on. now when we try to play some hd videos in vlc player it's pretty low frame rate but i'm not sure why. if we play 720p on videos it's pretty low frame rate too. in windows xp he could play these videos flawlessly. we tried installing a nvidia driver but it stops the desktop from working. in 10.04 the driver installed fine, however, in 10.10 after installing the driver on next boot it would start up at just a terminal. not a terminal window but just a black screen with white text on the entire monitor. i could only fix it by editing the xorg.conf changing a field that said "device: nvidia" to "device: nv". that driver may also be causing a problem.
if i cannot find a solution we will reinstall windows xp which i rather not do because i think ubuntu runs better. also, we installed xubuntu-desktop package so we are running xfce instead of gnome.

Is there anything I can do in Ubuntu 11.04 to get the Intel 945GM to work more stable and run faster? It won't load the Unity interface at ALL. It won't load the Classic Desktop unless I use the one without effects, or else the title bars disappear. Is there something I can do to make it more stable, and run more efficiently?
