Hardware :: Monitor Defaulting To Standby Mode?

Aug 15, 2009

Ever since I have been using Mepis 8 my monitor keeps defaulting to standby mode unless I keep using the mouse. I have tried all the usual things within KDE but with no success. Quite often I watch a dvd film on my PC and it is most annoying when the monitor switches off during a film. Is there an option within xorg.conf to stop this from occurring? My monitor is an LCD Benq FP91G+.

Ubuntu Servers :: New Server Installation Puts Monitor In Standby Mode?

Apr 13, 2010

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 server edition (twice, just to be sure) and the installation ran fine, but when I try to boot into the system, i get past the BIOS loading screen then my monitor just goes into power saving mode and I can't get it to see a signal from the PC. I know the OS is running, because I can ssh into it from my laptop, and I know the monitor works, because that machine had a windows OS on it before and that worked fine with the same monitor. I had thought it might be a graphics card thing with ubuntu trying to push out at a resolution not supported by the monitor, but I find that unlikely as it's brand new this month. If anyone has any idea of something I can try to diagnose the problem, that would be great. As I said, I still have ssh access to the PC, so I can basically try anything on it that I could if I was physically at the box itself.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Standby: Wireless Tries To Connect While On Standby

Jun 27, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot Windows 7 laptop.

On "suspend," the wireless card appears to close connections correctly. Then, >15 minutes later, the laptop's wifi LED lights up and the laptop generates heat.

The computer should be on standby, but instead it's waking itself up and running down the battery.

Are there any programs that might be failing to suspend for sleep? Are there any settings to prevent the wifi card from waking the computer?

I only noticed this because the laptop was getting hot and the battery was wearing down.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid (monitor Switches To Standby) - Screen Goes Black With A Flashing Cursor Then Changes Back To Purple

May 5, 2010

I cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.

I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.

Ubuntu :: Odd Resolution - Monitor After Switched It To TV Mode Then Back To PC Mode

Feb 8, 2011

When I first installed ubuntu 10.10, the display was for some reason tinted green and shifted a few inches to the right. After experimenting with the resolution preferences, I eventually got it to a large resolution (1280x720 ... or something like that) yet is was quite blurry. I found out that the problem was with my monitor after I switched it to TV mode, then back to PC mode. It became perfectly clear! All I had to do then was adjust the screen positioning by shifting it left a bit.

Even though I have made the resolution I figured out to be default, whenever I turn the PC on after shutting down, it goes back to the "green-and-to-the-side" mode. :/ Ain't really a big problem, until I tried to fiddle with the resolution preferences s'more.

Somehow, I have set it to be twice as wide of the maximum my monitor can display, went back to being green tinted for some reason, and is completely shifted left (yet the right side is still visible) This means that I cannot see what is going on the left side, and cannot adjust the resolution preferences, nor can I click blindly cuz the border is only around my visible side of the screen. Now it is stuck like this.

I've researched many hours and eventually found the terminal command for the resolution preferences. it popped up on the visible side. Although it was to no avail cuz I HAVE TRIED EVERY SETTING AND OPTION and absolutely nothing changed. I assume a system restore would simply revert it back to the previous satisfactory settings, but the thing is I want to FIX it. I am new to this terminal stuff, so I want to learn it and all that. To put it simply, here's what I want:

Learn how to manually adjust resolution without depending on a simple dialog box. Make the satisfactory resolution default and consistent through turning it on and off. Link that could teach me the essential commands, all this googling is stressful. D:

Ubuntu :: DVI: Cannot Display This Mode Message On Monitor

May 4, 2010

I have a Dell monitor attached to a Dell laptop. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

Spec:
Latitude E6500 : Intel Core 2 Duo P8800(2.66GHz,1066MHz,3MB)
Base Options : 256MB Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M Graphic Card 1 S
Display : 15.4in Widescreen WUXGA (1920X1200) 2CCFL
Dell 2001FP (attached using DVI)

When I try to boot into Ubuntu with the monitor attached I get a DVI: Cannot Display this Mode message on my monitor. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine if I detach the monitor. Have tried with VGA, but to no avail. I have the latest and greatest Nvidia drivers downloaded from the Nvidia web site. Googling indicates that this is a Dell problem, however, I am not sure about this. It worked just fine on my previous laptop (IBM T61) and Ubuntu 9.10, so I guess it has to do with the laptop and not Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Switch Between Single/dual Monitor Mode?

Jan 28, 2011

I recently hooked my television up to my computer as a second monitor so that I can watch videos on it. However, I don't always want to be in dual monitor mode. I've found that running "gksudo nvidia-settings" allows me to switch between the two modes without restarting X if I change some settings around and click "apply".

Is there a way I could setup two scripts to handle this process? The main problem I'm encountering is the fact that I change all the settings through the nvidia-settings graphical interface; therefore, I have no idea what's actually happening behind the scenes, so I don't know how to go about putting the two scripts together (what commands to issue, etc.).

Ubuntu :: Force Console Video Mode With Grub2 - No Monitor

Mar 25, 2010

I run a number of Ubuntu 9.10 boxes attached to multiple daisy-chained KVMs. None of the PCs are using any GUIs - they all run in console mode. I often reboot them remotely via an SSH session, etc. If a monitor isn't actually active on the PC when it reboots, Grub2 uses a low-res video mode, despite having a higher-res video mode set correctly in Grub2's configuration. If I reboot WHILE THE MONITOR is attached to the Ubuntu PC via the KVM, the video mode is set correctly as configured in Grub2's config files. If I reboot WITH NO MONITOR attached, the video mode is ignored and I'm stuck in a low-res mode next time I attach to the PC via the KVM. How can I force Grub2 to honor the configured graphics setting, despite not having a monitor present at the time it boots?

Debian Hardware :: Monitor Can't Go Into Power Saving Mode

Dec 27, 2015

I've recently changed to Debian from Windows, it's a really great adventure so far, but I have one problem. So as I see you can set your monitor into "Blank Page" after 10 or any minutes to save power, like in Windows. 10 minutes passes, without any movement my monitor's led turns into orange and the monitor turns off, that's great, that's what i want.

But after a few seconds the led turns green (like when it's on), and it brings up a little box : "Power Saving Mode" (just like it did after 10 minutes), and it turns off, and then stars again from the beginning . And this goes on repeatedly until a move my mouse to get back from "Blank page" state. (It's like the monitor tries going into power saving mode, but it gets always a little bit of power, to show that text box, and start all over.) So what can I do? I use debian 8.0 "jessie", and my monitor is a LG L1750S(with Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT).

General :: Monitor - Using 1920x1200 Mode On SyncMaster T260HD?

Feb 22, 2010

I just got a Samsung SyncMaster T260HD monitor. It works straight out of the box with Windows but I can't seem to get it to work with Linux, which is my primary OS for day to day work.

The computer boots up but when going into graphical mode on Linux the monitor gives me a "Mode not supported" error and doesn't display anything.

I booted up windows and, using PowerStrip, grabbed the exact ModeLine that should be used to get the equivalent setting in Linux and added it to my xorg config file but it doesn't seem to help. the ModeLine is:

ModeLine "1920x1200" 153.9 1920 1984 2016 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync

This is the modeline for the working display settings in windows but it doesn't seem to work in Linux My complete entry in the xorg.conf file for the monitor is

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
ModelName "SyncMaster"
DisplaySize 518 324

[Code]....

I'm running Scientific Linux 5.4 (clone of Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.4) but I've tried booting with a recent Linux Mint Distro as well as Ubuntu 9.04 and had the same problem.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 X64 / Nvidia Quadro NVS / Dell E6500 - Cannot Display This Mode' On The Primary Monitor

May 21, 2010

I am posting this to hear if there are others with display issues on Dell E6500 laptop with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160 driver. This problem is starting to annoy me a great deal, but I am uncertain how I should move forward. In short; I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed on my Dell E6500 laptop. When using only the laptop, everything works great. The second I plug it into the docking station (the laptop lid closed) and want to use my two external monitors (Dell 2001FP) I'm in trouble. I cant see anything and what I get is a 'DVI: Cannot Display this Mode' on the primary monitor - If i try a regular VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.

I have played around with the Nvidia config but it cant find my monitors and therefore I cant do much. I am aware of the various "hack the xorg.conf" options, but I before I do that I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing. I had hoped that we were pasted the hack stage and that primary functions such as display would work by now.

For the past few months I have been tirelessly trying to get my Asus PCE-AC68 to run with my custom Debian 7 with kali-linux-full installed.
