So lately I've been wanting to mess around with lightweight window managers. So installed both awesome and scrotwm from synaptic. Apparently these window managers need a startup script in order boot some applications on startup.
I've tried a few, but everytime I change the file *desktop, these desktop environments disappear from the options on GDM.

Problem with the Visual Effects under Appearance is grayed out. The options were available until after removing Compiz. Is there a way to restore back to the original setting of ubuntu 10.10 prior to installing Compiz?

I'm not sure how it happened but recently when trying to print to a previously added printer, the printer does not show up. Most options are grayed out and clicking troubleshooter tells you that CUPS is not started. Latest guide I could find is for Ubuntu 9.04, options for restarting cups in 10.4 are slightly different (see below) To restart cups from terminal window in Ubuntu 10.4:sudo /etc/init.d/cups restartI looks like in Ubuntu 9.04 the command was /etc/init.d/cupsys restart. This should show the printer and open up the grayed out menu options, allowing you to print normally again.

Been having some problems renaming a mp3 player. When I connect it to my computer it shows us like in the image I have attached below. I have tried to rename the media by going into its properties (no luck) and then tried to use gparted, but while I can select it, all the options are greyed out.

I would like to put my ubuntu system (the one on my partition) in a usb drive, so that way I can take it everywhere I go. The reason for this is because all of the programs I have and the configuration I currently have in my ubuntu (I should say "macbuntu"). That is:
burg boot loader (I probably don't need this one!)
x system plymouth theme || also windows 7 original plymouth theme
mac4lin 1.0 aqua GTK theme and emerald theme
mac ultimate icon theme
mac4lin 1.0 cursor theme (working even with compiz)
gnome global menu
compiz packagers ppawith all the extra stuff
telepathy ppa for empathy, having all the extra stuff working
also win2-7-pack_v-9.1
And lots more stuff!
I don't want my personal documents though (text docs, music, videos, pics 'maybe few pics'), just configuration files and programs. Can this even be possible?...

I have enjoyed setting up a live USB stick to boot Ubuntu from and it works very well but I can't make my settings persistent. The option to do that in Startup Disk Creator is greyed out, the Stored in Reserved Extra Space is just not available.

I want to make a live USB drive, perhaps even 1 with its own GRUB and a choice of operating systems..Its 16gb so it will fit..or maybe just install multiple desktop environments so I can switch depending on the resoruces of the computer I am using..Gnome>E17>LXDE.But I want it to be a regular account with a root/administrator password, ect. When I use the Startup disk creator or Unetbootin I find that the results are pretty limited. I might as well be using a live CD, but thats not ideal. Alternately, when I just install normally it doesnt always load, even when I hit F8 and tell it to boot from my USB drive.Knoppix based distros seem to work better than Ubuntu based distros in this regard, but I dont want Knoppix I want Ubuntu/Mint and friends. Finally, I have sometimes been having problems 'mounting' or using 'swapon'. Even when I turn on Swap with Gparted Im still not getting the benefit of the large swap area I have created..is this because of how the operating system uses swap? Is there a live distro that will save files and settings to swap before using up ram, by default? If not, is there a way to change the behavior of Ubuntu Live CD?
Is there a reason why we cant make proper paragraphs? Is this site strapped for bandwidth or something? Is the site just acting funny?

I had bought a new wifi card(rtl8185) and spent 2 days trying to make it work. I finally got it working but now I am experiencing some other problems.
First of all I get two many bootup options. Before I used to have 4 generic options(2 different kernels with each of them having their own recovery), memtest and then my win7. Now I am having those plus 4 server options and 4 preemp(no clue what this is) options. I am suspicious that this has to do with some command I ran: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-* I got some notify at that point about broken packages. I followed the instructions given and made the messages dissapear(I don't remember excactly what I did). Then when I saw that it shows all those bootup options I tryied sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-server and sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-preemp but that didn't solve anything.
My second problem is that in startup now even if I choose the generic option it doesn't load the gui but just gives me the command prompt so I have to run startx each time. I am kind of a noobie in linux but would like to learn so please give me some guidance. I thought of reinstalling a fresh copy of Ubuntu-desktop but it's just too hard work. So I would be grateful if you could tip me on how fixing the problem as it is. I run Ubuntu 10.04 x64

I'm not used to using Ubuntu or Debian as a server. I'm more accustomed to Red Hat/Fedora ways and even Gentoo (yikes).
Under Red Hat installs, you can often configure most services that start from init using config files in /etc/sysconfig named by the service. Is there and equivalent thing under Ubuntu?
Specically I'm trying to control how the libvirtd and kvm processes are started as far as command line options go. I need to add the --listen option somewhere.

I have a dual boot machine; sometimes I want to use windows for something Linux won't do.
It boots up Linux by default, so if I want Windows, I need to interrupt it at the beginning.
It would be more convenient if I could tell it, when I shut down, what to reboot into.

I've just configured a bind server for my home domain on Fedora 12. One thing that's buggering me is that Bind tries to do its lookups first with IPv6, which fails and then falls back to IPv4. This seems to me an unnecessary use of resources, so I'd like to turn this off. This is possible by using the option named -4, but there comes the part where. the Named start/stop script is defined in the /etc/rc.d/init.d dir, but how can I get Fedora to start this script with the named -4 option?

=> "Automatically remember running applications when logging out" is no longer existing because of bugs with multiple sessions. Is there a way to enforce this option, even if it is bugged with multiple sessions? My system has only 1 user and I miss so much this feature.

I had some issues with my system hanging on the automatic configuration of the install so I searched the web for the issue. After reading this thread: Hangs at end of SuSe 11 install I used acpi=off apm=off nolapci as the install options and it worked. My question is, do I need to add those options to the /grub/menu.lst or will the install do that?

Since the 10.10 upgrade my mouse clicks on my laptop have been behaving rather oddly. Sometimes it randomly does a middle click when i'm doing a left click, which is really annoying because it means that sometimes tabs close or my text gets random bits of text appearing in it. I've found that running this command "synclient tapbutton2=2 tapbutton3=0 rtcornerbutton=0 rbcornerbutton=0 clickfinger3=0" fixes it, but only temporarily, sometimes it only lasts like 10 minutes or so, other times it lasts till reboot. So, is there anyway to make these changes permanent?

I've been googling and reading up on how to set build optimizations for my system, and after consulting the Arch Wiki, old threads here, and some mailing lists, I've concluded that the way to set CFLAGS, etc. is by putting this in /etc/profile:
Code:
export CHOST="x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu"
export CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe"

When configuring a custom kernel using fedoraproject.org instructions, the make menuconfig options for LIRC are not in the .config file anywhere. I checked the kernel tree and all the files are there in the .../drivers/input/lirc subdirectory (I need the lirc_dev and lirc_i2c drivers). I reset the .config to its original settings to make sure I didn't mess up. I also grep'ed the .config file for any LIRC related settings, none found. Also I'm not getting any sound from the radio-aztech driver.

This utility doesn't work it won't format and won't boot the one time I got it working. Now it has broken my usb flash drive as gparted won't format it to anything . I tried the alternate unetbootin program and now it won't see the flash drive because the startup program trashed it. I still think the external usb devices is the most frustrating part of ubuntu and needs serious fixing. My new netbook install won't see any of my external drives.

I have a 1 tb external hard drive and I was trying to put a windows.iso on it with startup disk creator but everytime I would select the windows iso it wouldn't show up.
Some background:
- the disk images are from the reboot disks that came with my labtop
- I do not have access to windows
Edits:
Using gparted, I turned my external hard drive into a bootable and put both ISO disc on it. Once I plugged it in my labtop and turned my labtop on, I get an error messages that says "BOOTMGR is missing".
- I ripped the both ISO images from the 2 system recovery disc that I ordered from HP specially for my brand of laptop.
- My CD-ROM drive does not work, or else I would have just used the disc regularly
- The operating system currently on the labtop is Ubuntu 10.04

i am trying to make it so that my laptop that has crashed can run Ubuntu. It lacks an optical drive (CD Player) so i am trying to use a USB. After i downloaded the ISO, and then use the extractor like it says here I then went into the flash drive, went to [usb-creator.exe] The problem is that when i try to do this (make the USB the Startup disk) the iso refuses to load on the application, its hard to explain, but here's a picture. Even when i go to click other, browse for the ISO, and open that one, it still doesn't work.

I was attempting to create a bootable usb drive for a friend with Startup Disk Creator. I was certain I had selected the correct drive but apparently I had not, because when I clicked "format" it began to format sdb instead of sdc. Unfortunately, sdb was my external hard drive. In a panic i force quit the format window, as i couldn't see any other option.
Now, when i access my external hard drive all I see is 4 files with jibberish titles full of random symbols. When I right click the external drive it still says its ~70% full of data, so i guess everything is still there.. whether or not it is salvageable is the question. Is there anything to be done or is it beyond repair?
