upgraded to lucid and since doing so the 2nd hard drive and my 2 cd burners don't show up in "places" any more.I have no way to access the 2nd hard drive which has all my media on it. As far as the cd burners, they work when i use a program that requires the cd burners but they don't show up anywhere.if i run lshw it shows the harddrive and 2 cd burners.

I think I've lost my MBR upgrading from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. During the upgrade it gave me a message saying which partitions did I want the grub details to go on, saying if I was unsure to select all of them. After reboot I just end up in a grub recovery console.The system was a dual boot with windows vista.how I can get both my operating systems to work?

I have 2 machines with ubuntu (now 9.10) and 2 with XP. After upgrading the ubuntu machines to 9.10 my wired LAN does not let me connect between the linux and MS machines. They did before the upgrade. Where and what should I check to see why the ubuntu machines cannot connect to each other or to the XP machines?I have looked at the network connections and it shows 'auto eth0', last used 'never'. I select the auto eth0 and click on the edit tab and the wired tab shows a MAC address and MTU is set to automatic. The 802.1x Security tab shows it not checked and grayed out. The ipv4 settings tab shows 'automatic'. The ipv6 settings tab shows 'ignore'.
When I click on the Places/Network, the Windows Network icon comes up. When I click on it, I get the MSHOME icon and the WORKGROUP icon. When I click on either of them I get message saying "Opening MSHOME" and then the message 'unable to mount, failed to retrieve share list from server'. The same thing happens when I click the WORKGROUP icon.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and it seems to have lost my evolution email program and all the information in it. It is no longer on the panel and no longer in Internet applications but when I go to the software center it says that it is still installed. Is there a chance it is still there and usable? I'd like to keep it rather than switch. How would I find it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and everything went smoothly EXCEPT that g++-4.1 and all its dependencies were uninstalled, and now it's nowhere to be found in Synaptic Package Manager. How can I get g++-4.1 back??
ps. I know that I can download source and build it manually, but there has to be a more "Ubuntu-ish" way of doing it.
I have lost wifi access with the upgrade to 11.4.Previously, the receiver icon showed on left click a menu of available networks, and on right click, available network by network settings for editing. The menu also included enable wireless connection and enable wired connection. I have wireless enabled.
But with the upgrade, the same menu appears on left click or right click, and they both show a greyed out "wireless disconnected" tab, so you can't connect from there, the tab is disabled. There's also no place else to go to find available networks or to lock into one. There also does not seem to be a place to find wired networks either.I installed my wifi network in it, and put in the correct password and set it to come on automatically, and 3x restarts did not yield any changes. Apparently network finding is disabled in this version or at least my copy.It isn't the computer: I'm on line with it now on the Windows XP side.
This is doubly problematic because if I can't get on line, I can't download a fix, and even if I could by downloading it to the Windows side, it is probably a binary with some very scripts and meticulous BASH coding or tarballing something else that I have no idea how to do even with a walk through by an expert because most of the time the experts assume I know as much about using a Linux terminal and code as they do, and I basically know absolutely nothing, it is all Greek to me from the point at which they say "open a terminal." "Go to root" might as well be said in Chinese as far as its usefulness to me. What is the plan here? A complete redo from the get go?
New and ignorant here. I got a new System 76 netbook, love it, went to upgrade Ubuntu and since, have not been able to get wireless to work. Wireless light is off, no switches work to activate. Unit has no CD drive, can't get on internet without connection. Not sure this is the correct forum.
I recently upgraded to koala, but gimp no longer functioned after upgrade; i.e. open file popup dialogue freezes, crop tool is non-functional, preferences dialogue was absolutely a blank box. Tried un-install/re-install thru both the new software center and synaptic. Same broken result every time. Tried a direct download from gimp.org but ran into a lot of dependency stuff I know nothing about; I'm an end user, not a coder. So, how do I get a functioning install of gimp?

The second HD, which contains all of my music, used to mount as:
/media/disk/AllMusic
Now it mounts as:
/media/d7c7179f-d775-49ff-889e-661d6d188452/AllMusic
So the music player applications can't find the music, and neither can the other computers on my home network.
Ubuntu won't let me rename it.
How can I fix this and restore this shared drive?
I keep finding the same fixes on the web and they are not working. What I have/what I did: I have a dual boot PC. HD0 was XP. HD1 Kubuntu 10.04. I upgraded XP to Win 7. This jacked my Grub up, now all I can load is Win 7. I don't see the Grub menu anymore. I've been trying to reinstall Grub using varoius web pages like: [URL]
They seem to all be telling me the same thing but not working. I boot into a liveCD. I have to sudo apt-get install grub then I can do sudo grub. I follow the instructions:
sudo grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition".
Now if I'm understanding this right the reason for that is. HD0,0 is my first HD first partition (which is Win 7), and grub doesn't like windows. I tried swapping it out so it reads:
sudo grub
> root (hd1,0)
> setup (hd1)
I then quit and reboot. Win 7 loads. I don't see Grub.I am using 2 separate hard drives?
Was upgrading from 10.4 to 10.10 using the Update Manager. All files downloaded and I think it was about 1/3 of the way through the Installation when I lost power. Now when it boots I have a purple screen with no login box.
Is there a way to restart the upgrade?
My apt-get was really really slow since the installation of 10.10. Doing downloads at 100~2000 B/s.So,I decided to upgrade the Ubuntu version by the CD, a big mistake by the way.Near end, the installation got crashed and frozen. Over 3 hours on same command line.Then, I hardly rebooted the system to get in the OS, and it works. BUT all data within /etc and /var IS GONE! My whole life was in "/var/www" and "/var/lib/mysql" and that is gone too.

This is my fourth on-line upgrade from Gutsy (started with Dapper ...) all the previous one went without a hitch !
So I was pretty confident this afternoon upgrading my Lenovo laptop from 9.04 to 9.10.
At one point during the install, I got error messages and was offer to do a "Partial Install". I accepted, different things happened, rebooted. Update manager came on with again the partial update pop-up. Accepted it again, it downloaded more files, rebooted, partial upgrade window again but it failed immediately.
The network connection was gone, clicking on the network icon I got a message that the network manager is not running.
I cannot check or uncheck the "network unabled" choice.
However, 9.10 is running, slow and weird, but no network connection so I cannot try to finish the "partial upgrade"
Every time I reboot the Update manager pops up.
Trying to boot any previous version in "grub" fails right away saying it is unable to mount the drives ...
Is there a way to start the Network Manager from a terminal ?

The only real issue is that I lost the transparency settings for the menu & indicator applets on my top knome panel. I simply don't remember how i did it last time, and i've been searching the net for an hour for a solution with no luck. Many results suggested the use of the Compiz Settings Manager's opacity settings, but that opacity applies to everything, including the text & icons. I thought i used the "gnome color chooser" package to do it last time, but I cannot find the option in the gui. how to make the background of the menu (applications/places/system) and indicator applet have transparent backgrounds while retaining full text/icon brightness?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a script that toggles my touchpad on and off and I assigned it a custom keystroke using gconf-editor. It worked fine until I upgraded to Natty and now I can't make it work anymore. I checked and the script is still the value of 'command_1' and the same keystroke (<Alt>t) is still the value of run_command_1 in the universal keybindings. But, for whatever reason, when I hit <Alt>t, nothing happens. I've tried using assigning different keystrokes, but nothing has worked.

I've just done an upgrade after noticing the Update manager thingee at the bottom of the screen. I was listening to my music when I noticed it.
I did the Restart now after upgrading. Now I have no sound at all. Checked headphones were turned up which they were. Checked sound settings and found there were no Devices in Hardware and Input and a Dummy Output (stereo) listed in Output. I would have thought that my onboard sound would have shown up as well as the sound bits on my HDMI card - not that I've ever managed to get sound out of my telly via the HDMI cable. (I do have Alsa sound installed).
Botched upgrade to 11.04, but learned enough about Unity that I don't want to go there. (also installer to put second new 11.04 wants to erase everything on main drive). Can reach 10.10 -boot from prior Linux - but mouse and internet are gone. Everything else seems to work and I can get to System and terminal with keyboard shortcuts, but need to reinstall mouse (Logitech M110) and internet. Can't find an Xorg.conf file or a /dev/input/event3.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running 32bit Lenny on an older Dell Dimension 2400 running the 2.6.26 Kernel. This box was mainly used to play movies for my son over the network (most are encoded by me using xvid and lame). One of my kids wanted to use the computer to watch videos on ...... I attempted to install the flashplugin-nonfree from the backports and it kept timing out on downloading the package, so I ran apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade. I rebooted and tried the flashplugin-nonfree again and finally got ..... videos to play but there was no sound. I assumed it was a permission issue, so I switched users and attempted to play some of the movies which I've played before and currently the video plays fine but the audio sounds very ugly. I attempted to play an mp3 using mpg123 from the command line and I get mostly static. You can hear some sound but it's all jumbled and there is a lot of static. I have a creative soundblaster card using the EMU10k1 driver. Everything was working fine before I started mucking with the flashplugin and I'm afraid something I "upgraded" may have caused my issue.
Any suggestions? Is there a way I can remove any sound related drivers etc and attempt to reinstall them? I attempted to run sudo alsaconf but afterwards, it acts like there is no sound card. a reboot resolves that issue as I didn't save any changes, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I've become spoiled by all of the newer distros which detect all of my hardware and everything is configured for me.
Desktop lost (Cinnamon 2.2.16 for me) after a recent dist-upgrade in Sid. I'm new to Sid, so is this normal?

I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4. All went well except I lost several previously installed apps, including my calendar program and a favorite game (and I don't know what else yet).I reinstalled the calendar, but have not been able to get the game back. The name of the game was something like "gnomemetris," or something similar. It consisted of a matrix of colored balls. The object is to click on groups of balls to remove them and accumulate a high score.
That game was a favorite and I'd like to get it back. I've searched Applications/Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic Package Manager but can't find any program like that. My guess is that the game is no longer included in the repositories that Lucid looks at.If anyone can give some advice on how to get that game back, or info on what happens to older software during an upgrade.
I am using the VirtualBox PUEL version, and I used to run Windows + the driver program of my Lexmark USB scanner - successfully. Now I have upgraded to Karmic, and when I try to attach the virtual machine to the USB scanner I see its line (and all other lines) greyed out, see the screenshot below:
Thus I have lost USB connectivity after upgrade to Karmic. Also in the yellow status box "Unavailable" appears. how to use my scanner and other USB devices again?
