View 2 Replies View RelatedGot a little problem with my keyboard layout (de -- German; all variants). Everything worked fine until a few days ago. I noticed that the tilde (usually accessible via [AltGr]+[+]) doesn't work any more. What it shows instead is the "bracketright". Even worse, almost every AltGr combination seems to have changed -- the brackets enclosing AltGr and + in the former sentence were achieved by "AltGR"+"" (left) and "AltGr"+"+" (right). Here's what gnome-keyboard-properties looks like, when I select any German keyboard layout -- minus "insert", "delete", ... and the num block:
Not only has the tilde disappeared from its regular position, it can't be found anywhere on the keyboard. This holds true from the login screen to the regular workspace. Switching to tty1..6 or booting up a VM, everything works fine. I didn't touch anything which affects the keyboard layout -- or is dpgk-reconfigure fontconfig doing something like this? ^^
My ASUS Eee PC 701's keyboard has some broken keys: 1,3,5,7,8,0,=,bkspc and tab do not function at all.Whilst I can just about make do as is, it would be nice to be able to press Ctrl+AltGr+'Q-P' for numbers or something.
View 4 Replies View Relatedpreviosuly installed products that mapped keys, but I dont have and have never had any of them. reset the keyboard to default settings, which I happily did to no avail.
So for me, since I upgraded, keyboard input (either local or via VNC, so it isnt hardware) does nothing for either the caps lock key or the shift key. Kinda makes it imnpossible to eneter @ or any uppercase character, for example !
My aging laptop has a key broken - the D key. To replace the keyboard is too expensive, not worth spending 100 on old hardware. I sometimes use an external USB keyboard just to type D but being laptop is not always convenient. My question is how to bind key letter D to something else, be it a key combo or one of the unused/unneeded keys?On this italian laptop keyboard there are some keys i never use like Mac style right click menu button next to AltGr or home/end keys i could spare for this.

* Gnome keyboard interface appears to do nothing when options are changed, works in fc10.
* Trying to changed the keyboard options originally crashed the nx connection, untill I murdered bug buddy who was the culprit in that issue.
In fc10 you could change options and see a result, not so in fc11, why ?

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).
When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.
Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)

I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
When I use the down arrow on my new keyboard it also does and enter key as well. When I use the left and right arrow keys and hold them it doesn't keep going. It just clicks once and I have to pressing it over and over again. Any one know the correct settings to setup my keyboard? It's a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhy does Ubuntu 9.10 keep logging me out? This only started about a week ago and it seems to be getting worse. I have not installed any new hardware or software. The only thing that's been installed recently are the routine Ubuntu updates. I just got logged out 4 times in less than 10 minutes while I was trying to type a reply to a message in another forum. I had to reboot into WinXP to post this message and finish my reply in the other forum. This is getting REAL annoying and I can't find any solutions. Someone suggested that uninstalling Compiz would fix it so I did that, but it seems to have gotten worse. I've really liked Ubuntu until now, but I'm on the verge of trashing it if this problem can't be fixed.
View 7 Replies View Relatedhow I could run a command before logging on, in addition, the command needs to run as root.
This is going back to some few weeks months ago, shortly after I upgraded to Karmic Koala. Since then, the sound device doesn't work automatically. I donno why, but alsa doesn't seem to detect the audio device.
Once I have booted the machine, I can access sound by doing:
Code:
sudo alsa force-reload
Needless to say, that's pretty annoying and I posted two or three threads to find a solution to this problem, but never got anywhere.
Failing that I get the issue resolved, running the 'alsa force-reload' command at boot up, so that when I'm logged in, it's already working.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu Studio 9.0.4., as a VMWare virtual machine in OSX to check it out. I specified a password to 'root', did not add any other users. (I run the whole show as "admin" in OSX and Windows as well. If some kid wants my files - The mp3's are under "Music".)
Anyhow, the Ubuntu Studio install went through, the nifty login splash screen came up. I tried to login in a "root" with my password, and got the following thing into my face:
"The system administrator is not allowed to login from this screen"
OK, so what "other" login screen does Ubuntu have, then?
Ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, I've been having this problem. Every now and then, for seemingly no reason at all, the screen will go black and after a few seconds I find myself at the login screen. I've kept track of when it happens and there is seemingly no pattern to it; sometimes it will happen when I'm watching a video, sometimes it just happens when I'm browsing the internet, and sometimes it happens when I'm not doing anything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a program for my Nokia E52 smartphone called Joikuspot. It creates a ad-hoc network and acts as internet gateway. But Ubuntu has a really hard time logging on to the network. Most times it takes several minutes before the network even shows up in the network manager applet, and when it does it might take many tries before the computer get a DHCP address from the phone. When it finally does happen, everything works great and the connection is fast and stable. There is no problems when i try to access the ad-hoc network with a XP machine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspirion 6400 with proprietary Broadcom STA driver for the network card.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to create a simple way to change the language of my system without logging out. I would like to make it so that a user can just click on something and the language of the whole system will change.
I've disabled the traditional gdm gui login screen by adding the keyword 'text' to the kernel line so that it boots to a command line. I then start gnome by using startx and I've noticed that I can log out of gnome back into the command line, then change the environment LANG variable to the new desired language, run startx again and everything is in the new desired language.
I need a programmable way to only restart gnome(not a reboot) so that I can make a script that a user can just click on and it will set the LANG variable then restart gnome(preferably preserving all open applications, but if not, doesn't matter).
