Ubuntu Networking :: List Of Kernel-supported Mobile Broadband Modems ?

Jun 4, 2010

I am looking to buy my own unlocked/never-locked mobile broadband modem, and I want it to work well on my 64-bit 10.04 Ubuntu system (triple-booting MacBook 4,1). Is there a list of mobile broadband modems supported in the linux kernel out there somewhere? I did try to find one myself, but no luck. The Huawei E220 looks good, but it is discontinued.

Debian Hardware :: Looking For List Of Supported Sound Cards?

Jul 8, 2011

I'd like to make a complete switch to Debian. One of the things holding me back is not knowing the state of play regarding sound card support. I've been fiddling around on and off for three years trying to get my M-Audio FireWire Solo to work in Ubuntu without much joy. I think there might be greater support for USB sound cards but I'm not certain of this. Onboard cards aren't OK because in my experience these pick up too much noise. After years of using balanced audio lines it's pretty much impossible to go back. That said, a PCIe card isn't completely out of the picture if I can get balanced outs with it.

I'm planning on plugging KRK powered monitors via XLR or TRS cables into the sound card. But my preference at this point is firmly with USB sound cards. Is there an up-to-date list I can check of supported sound cards in Debian? Can anyone here provide a testimonial of their experience? It's important to note that I'm after playback only. I don't want to record ever. That should hopefully make things easier. I'd be looking at using Debian wheezy.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Any List Of Wireless PCI Cards Supported By OSS 11.3?

Aug 21, 2010

I recently read over here: Getting Your Wireless to Work : "For example, open-source firmware for the Broadcom BCM4306/3 BCM4318, and BCM4311/1 was just released. Future openSUSE versions will be able to include this firmware and those devices will work immediately..." I am looking for PCI cards for desktops. Besides the list of supported chipsets at [URL], is there a brand name list with firmware support by OSS 11.3? At the moment, I have a Netgear WG311v3 which believe has been causing system instabilities in both linux and windoze:

Ubuntu :: Software For Viewing Other's Webcams

Mar 5, 2010

My wife use to look at this webcam using the Opera web browser, setting it to reload each 2 seconds or each second or so. However, she'd like to be able to watch the link in a minimal window without having to start the web browser. Anyone know of such a program? The program is supposed to open the link as an image and update it every second or so. It should be "ultra light" and have a minimal user interface.

Another option would be to view the webcam directly on the desktop instead of only having a picture there. Is that possible? What additional software does she need for that? She has compiz fusion installed, if that matters. She has Ubuntu 9.04 on one computer and Ubuntu 9.10 on the other one. If you click at the link above and it's completely black (except for some text and some logos), it's probably because it's night (Swedish time) and they turned off the lights.

Ubuntu :: Usb Webcams Work Fine In Cheese But Not In Skype?

Nov 4, 2010

I wonder if someone might be able to help with a webcam problem I'm having (or point me in the direction of a previous thread on the subject?). I'm trying Xubuntu on my wife's elderly Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. It's working beautifully for the most part. But I've tried two different usb webcams, both of which are recognized by Cheese but don't work in Skype.

In Skype, what happens is that Skype is aware that a webcam is present. It does NOT say "no webcam detected". But in Skype Options, when I visit the Options for "Video Devices", and click on the "Test" button to test the webcam, nothing happens at all.

And when I make a test video call to a friend, with video turned on, all the friend sees is a black screen where the image should be, and a little turning symbol presumably to indicate "please wait for image to appear". It never appears.

Fedora :: Unable Autosuspend For Laptop Webcams?

Jun 10, 2010

ignore powertop's recommendation. After searching around the web, that message about how to enable autosuspend is very out of date. This thread discusses the history of the powertop suggestion, and discusses using the driver or udev to autosuspend an eeepc webcam. It also includes this nugget:

Quote:
In the mean time - the thread I linked to includes a helpful note from Xandros. They measured that enabling the camera on the 901 model cost ~3% of overall power. So autosuspending the camera won't extend your battery life that much, but every little bit helps. This page describes the user interface for dynamic power management in a device's sysfs directory. This caveat and another note from that page should be considered: 214For this reason, by default the kernel disables autosuspend (the 215power/level attribute is initialized to "on") for all devices other 216than hubs. Hubs, at least, appear to be reasonably well-behaved in 217this regard.

Does this meet the required 4 ports mentioned for alike cameras in the forum posting. If not, I have one of these.. Is this what they are talking about. I have just started thinking about this again and am not sure if I'm asking the right question. I don't want to go buying a bunch of hardware I can not use. So I'm hoping to look to someone here who has some experience in live streaming audio / video to one of the distribution sites.
