I have Ubuntu 11.04, and yesterday i make updates by update-manager.When my buntu updates, web pages in firefox and chromium stopped working, but skype works normal.I dont know how to solve this problem.can ping IP adresses in terminal, but cant ping names of the sites, for example google.com.But if i typed for example ip adress of google in to firefox, it is not working. If i typed name "google.com" in to firefox, not working. What the hell is it? DNS problem? Dont know...The problem is with Acer Aspire One netbook. My internet connection is from ISP to router, from router wifi to my acer aspire one. Before updates everything was working fine. I have PC connected by wire from the router, with WIN XP and it is working fine.
At the beginning I want to mention that I know that there are plenty of similar bugs on this forum. but...I have installed openSUSE 11.2 64 bit on my girlfriend laptop, network manager successful join my wireless network.I can login to Skype, Kopete and chat but I can't browse pages with Firefox, also plasmoids that require Internet connection doesn't work and Google Earth can't connect. But Skype does I have tried to use ifup, no_acpi, disabling IP v6 with no success. She's got Toshiba L300 laptop.
I have internet from KabelBW (cable modem which doesnt require any username,password,dns,mac...) they gave me a cisco modem, I connected it with my asus router and it has been working fine since today! when I woke up I turned on my lap top and loged in skype, but I couldnt open google, then I tried yahoo..nothing! I havent made and changes yesterday! I dont know what is wrong! I am new to ubuntu and I dont know what to do! when I connect directly to modem I have internet it works good, but when I connect through my (LAN or Wireless) router I cant view web pages. I have tried to google for the answer but all the answers are for windows OS versions! I tried to restart lap top, and the router 100 times but nothing!
I have used my webcam with skype before in several ocations, but now im not able to do so.The wencam works with cheese, so i dont now where to got form here.On skype video options, it shows only one video/webcam device (CNF7017 (/dev/video0). when i with test on the options shows a gray screen, which is the same that im sending to my contacts when we video chat.
I tried to set up my internet connection using the network manager and not the classic iufp method. At first it just didn't work but after deactivating IPv6 I got it working: firefox can connect to the internet. What troubles me is the online update with Update Applet. The following message pops up: "Error: packageKit error repo-not-available: Failed to download /media fromAlso when I go to Yast->Software->Software repositories I get the msg:Systemadministration is blocked by PID 2459 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd). Close the application and try again.Using the command "sudo zypper refresh"eates the same message.I spent already hours trying to figure out the problem without luck
I am running Maverick 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-22 (32 bit) on an HP DV2000 with Skype version 2.1.0.81The webcam is detected by lsusb as Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0c45:62c0 Microdia Sonix USB 2.0 CameraI have tried some of the normal fixes found on many other threads (and HERE), including running the following commands from the terminal:
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and am trying to get Skype working for work. Sound doesn't work for random events. I ran Skype as root and the sound works perfectly. Can anybody give me some information on how do I set the permissions for the program so the sound works so I don't have to run the program as root?
I am working on an Acer Aspire 5515 laptop. Installed UE 2.7. Need Skype working. Webcam works fine. Audio works fine. When I connect to a video call, the person I am calling can hear and see me, but while I can hear them, I can't see them.
After an hour of trying to configure my microphone to work with Skype under ALSA, I finally reached success! Below is crucial information to what I did, I am using the laptop's built-in microphone.

My webcam works at my end but two people have said they can't see me their end using skype. They webcam with other people so i know it is not their settings or anything. One has a mac and the other a windows machine. I really don't have anyone else to test this with as most people i know don't have webcams.
I'm using a basically vanilla Lubuntu 11.04 My Logitech E 3500 webcam works fine with Cheese. I have just installed Skype, but my voice isn't picked up on the test call, and no video either (the webcam light remains off). I've tried logging off and into Skype.
I was impressed with the hardware detection in Fedora -- it picked up my wireless & webcam right out of the box. The odd thing is, that Fedora picked up the webcam right away, and it worked perfectly in Cheese (I was able to take both photos & video), but when I try to use it in Skype all I get is green "snow". The webcam is a Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX.
I have quite a strange problem with Skype and Opensuse. First problem was that when I used microphone on Audigy 4 (from some reason recognised as Audigy 2) the sound which people received from me was very chirpy. This problem was solved easily, I just turned my on-board sound system on and started using micorphone from integrated card. And here comes my weird problem. Microphone works all right, but only for short period. After some time after I start talking to someone on Skype the microphone turns itself off, but I can still hear my interlocutors. The only solution is to go to Yast and restart sound system or to restart whole computer, both of which are not real solutions, but well, they sort of work. I'm using Opensuse 11.2 x64.
I have a desktop pc with xubuntu 9.10 32bit installed. I don't have direct access to this machine, but they told me that internet is not working (firefox, synaptic,etc...), but only skype works! If they reboot on windows, everything works well, so it's not a matter of connection or dns. It's very important because they work with that computer. How can i solve the problem? and what could be the cause of this strange anomaly
I have been trying to get skype working on 10.04 x64. I succeeded last night by using a pulseaudio config file to stop autospawning, but this kills volume management on many other apps as well. I just wrote a quick skype startup script to kill pulseaudio when skype is opened, and replace it when skype is closed, but I would rather have an autospawning exception for skype only. Is there a way to tell pulse audio not to autospawn for skype related processes only?
I'm having trouble with some qt-based apps that did work previously but now do not. So far I've seen this with Skype, VLC and umbrello. Applications appear to execute but GUI never seems to initialise. CPU remains around 90%. I'm using an eeepc 1000H running ubuntu intrepid 8.10 with adam's kernel 2.6.27-8-eeepc. Any ideas on how I can debug this? As I mentioned these applications worked fine in the past, I'm guessing an update broke them.
I am using 8.04, Pulseaudio, Microsoft Lifechat USB headset and Skype on a Compaq 210. Pulse works fine for everything else. One day, it just stopped working for no apparent reason (only on the Skype mic) so I uninstalled and went back to ALSA (for a few reasons) but couldn't get that working either so now back to square one. When I boot Skype, all goes well, can place a test call, no errors. But on playback of the message it's pure fuzz, basically white noise, no sign of my voice. I've twiddled with just about every volume control and toggle I can find and then some, but nothing. Another interesting thing; Pulse is now NOT working unless I input 'pulseaudio -D' in a terminal after boot. Then it seems to be okay, 'cept the mic.
Strange as the mic works perfectly and crystal clear in Sound Recorder. No probs. So:
1/ How do I replace the recorded white noise in a Skype test call with my own mellifluous tones and;
2/ Where do I put 'pulseaudio -D' (what file) so it will be read and turn pulse on at boot?
Using Skype 2.1.0.47 (I know there is a newer version, .87 I think, but that was even more problematic). Another strange thing; the newer version (.87?) worked flawlessly for months before the mic just one day died (ONLY in Skype). As explained on my last thread; wife's uni/entertainment machine and me being the house computer dude, one of the reasons we use Linux is so I am not fixing Windows problems constantly. I only go near this machine when something goes pear-shaped so that is rarely. My wife doesn't tweak with her computer AT ALL.
Sound issues on this machine have been pretty much constant and I am really sick of it. I have two desktops running ALSA and Skype flawlessly with any USB headset AND they can ring incoming calls through the external speakers and you can take the call through the headset, something that is seemingly impossible for some reason in Pulse. Despite its bells and whistles, this is a serious oversight by Pulse developers in my opinion. (Unless I'm missing something and I've have searched for hours trying to fix THAT little mystery).
I type Chinese using ibus, but it dosen't seem to work at all with skype, is there anything I can do to get it working? Ibus isen't working for me in libre office either.
I installed the 64 bit version of 10.04. I downloaded Skype and it works fine, but it doesn't see my built in webcam under 'options'. The monitor is a ThinkVision 2251x.
I'm using ubuntu 10.10 maverick, i have installed gnome alsamixer and pavucontrol, checked the settings but still not working.. My laptop model is sony vaio vpcs111fm. By the way here s d link for my alsa [URL]
I am having this problem since the day I upgraded ubuntu from 10.04 to 10.10. Couldn't solve it then and now I would like to try again.
>> Webcam is working fine in Cheese Webcam Booth.
But it's not detected in skype. I tried this command
Code: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype >> I didn't work as last time. Error Messages of it on terminal is as under: Quote: ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
I'm running mac osx snow leopard 10.6.2, installed virtualbox, created a partition with it and on that I installed Ubuntu (looking more specifically, I found it is Karmic Koala). For one, is kubuntu ubuntu karmic like mine? Or is that something different? Anyways, Did all that, installed guest permissions and everything, but before that and still, when I load up firefox, I can search some google things, but whenever I go to an actual page or something that seems like it needs just a little more muscle than google searching, it just crashes and disappears. So I basically can't access the internet.
I even tried installing Google Chrome through the terminal by some tutorial on another site. It worked and I got it all installed. It does the exact same thing Firefox does. I can do a couple of searches (sometimes not even that before it crashes) but when I go any further than that, it crashes.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I can't seem to get skype to work. See, the person I'm chatting with can receive video and audio, I can receive audio, but I cannot see them, even when they engage their webcam.
My cheese can take pictures from my webcam, but I can't see the screen of the webcam before I take the picture, it's only black, and when I click on the take the picture, it'll take it, and display it correctly, but the screen is black. Now, I just dled camorama, but it's saying "Could not connect to video device C/dev/video0). please check connection." I don't know what this means.
My lsusb says:
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub[code].... The Ricoh Webcam is a built in cam, but it doesn't work either. I have an external cam that used to work, but the cam works, it's just the display that seems effed up.
Here's a weird one and hoping there will be a fix. It took an age to get Skype working with Pulseaudio and a USB headset but I got there. Still can't get it to ring through the speakers but use the headset for a call, which you can with ALSA, but there you go. I sometimes wonder if Pulse as default was a step forward or back. Anyway, current prob. All working fine for about four months. The machine is regularly unplugged and moved no drama.I take it out one day, come home, plug in, make a test call, get no error messages about playback or input device, I can hear the test call fine, but my recorded message playback is dead air. Nothing. Silence.
Hmm. I check absolutely everything obvious then open 'Pulseaudio Volume (recording)' find the mic is working fine (I could also hear it through the headset but this told me the audio path for the mic was through Pulseaudio for sure). So I make another test call with the volume window up and there is a level while I am recording my Skype test call message, but on playback there is again silence!I'm bamboozled for the moment. This seems to have happened at random. Used Sound Recorder to record with the mic and no problem. Working fine.Just Skype seems to be not hearing the mic at all, even though Sound Devices is set to Pulseaudio (you have no choice with Pulse).
I have an Acer Aspire One netbook and have tried to enable my microphone without any luck. Surprisingly the Sound Recorder works perfectly but skype and ekiga are not able to transfer my voice. I have tried playing around with gnome ALSA mixer and PulseAudio Volume Control but nothin changes.
You really have to love this fantastic Ubuntu system which destroys your setup and programmes with an update.
It seems as though one of the updates made a mess of Skype this time. well done.
Ok so here is what's happening.
First i have to say that to get my sound card working i needed to upgrade ALSA. Everyhting was running fine until....NOW.
I haven't used Skype in a while but now i thought lets use it a bit. I start up Skype there is sound. but then suddenly sound is gone. video is just fine. sound is gone completelly from Skype. mic doesn't work and neither do spekers, eventhough upon launch everything works. i can't even do a test call. in fact i could do it once but the sound was messy.
also the skype seems to have crashed as i can't exit it at all. it's just keeps running as process.
anyone had something similar? any solutions? i would post this on Skype forums, but since Skype worked before and now it doesn't anymore i believe it is Ubuntu issue.

I was able to get it to work in the Sound Recorder Application and in the System Testing function, but when I do the Skype Test Call, or call someone with Skype, while I can hear the other person perfectly well, my microphone does not appear to work at all, so it is a strictly one way conversation.
I've made sure with the ALSA Mixer that everything is turned on, and all my sound settings are fine, but microphone won't work in Skype.
