Ubuntu :: Internal Drives Duplicated And NOT Readable/writeable?
Nov 7, 2010
I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.10 and simultaneously added 4 new hard drives. However I can not read or write to any of the disks (without sudo). They are also showing up twice (mounted and removable on top, unmounted underneath) in the "Places" menu. Of course I want them to be mounted, not removable, R/W'able and only show up once. Here'a a screenshot of where I'm at:I believe I set up fstab correctly:
Code:

We have about four workstations and a server. What we need is authenticating with the server, and when you log on, you should see your own desktip and documents idnependent on which workstation you use. Could this be solved by placing the user's home on a server share? We also need a server share accessible from both Linux, Windows an Mac, readable and writeable, as some prefers to bring their laptops to the office.I've read a little bit about terminal servers, but using the workstations as thin clients sounds like a waste, as they're just as powerful as the server. "Fat" clients sounds better,

I decided I could get by without WIN7 on my computer on a permanent basis, so re-installed Fedora 14 on drive SDA (Drive 0), previously occupied by WIN7, and formatted all other drives in the system (SDB, SDC, and SDD to EXT4.The install went well, and everything is working except one thing - I cannot get SDB,SDC or SDD to copy files one to the other. The message I get is that permissions do not allow this process. The automount works OK, and I can access the contents of individual files on these drives, but as far as copying goes, there is no go.What other parameters do I have to add to the automount in /etc/fstab to allow for this read/write function, or am I looking in the wrong area entirely?I have searched these forums and the Internet in general, but I cant seem to find anything specific to this problem.

I was wondering if it was possible to put something like a linux image on to a hard drive to install the OS on first boot. The reason I want to do this is because of the following reasons. First, I broke the IDE port on the mobo so I can't use the internal DVD drives on the computer.
Second, I don't have an extra SATA DVD drive lying around. Third, for some reason, this computer will boot from a USB DVD drive but once it starts loading the kernel, it just stops calling the drive and the computer freezes. I tested the disc and the drive with another computer and it works fine. And forth, the computer refuses to boot from a USB flash drive with linux on it. So as you can see, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I would love to be able to hook the hard drive up to another computer and put the required files on the it for it to boot up to an installation.

yesterday my 9.10 stopped automounting my external USB drive, and in general any pendrive I put into any USB slot. What's worse, it also does not recognise CDs put into my DVD drive. (The only update I recall doing was the official update to the "sudo" package.)
1. The USB issue.I plug in my external hard drive. Seemingly, nothing happens. No new icons appear anywhere.
b) I tried gconf-editor and in apps -> nautilus -> preferences "media_automount" is set to YES.
c) After searching around these forums, I even put "usb_storage" into /etc/modules
2. The DVD drive issue.I put an audio CD in the drive. Usually an 'Audio CD' icon appeared after a few seconds, but now nothing happens. There is a "cdrom0" icon visible in the explorer, but when I click it, I get the following error: Code:Unable to mount cdrom0
So, it seems that for some strange reason my Karmic stopped being able to automount any new media. Does anyone have an idea why it is so and what should I do to bring this much-needed functionality back?

So I'm running proftpd on an old machine just for my own backup purposes, but I'm running out of space. I was wondering if it would be safe/efficent to set up an additional USB hard drive to the LVM drive that I have now? As in, would it write quick enough (USB 2.0), read quick enough and not corrupt data?

Running:Fedora 13kernel 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686desktop: xfce 4.6.2Problem: I have a 1TB drive (SATA) with 2 partitions. The partitions/volumes don't show on the desktop.The volume names are:MASSIVEBACKUP.
Facts:1. When I login using GNOME, both volumes (MASSIVE & BACKUP) are listed on my desktop2. My /etc/fstab has long since been edited to reflect these drives3. Using XFCE: Although the volumes don't show on the desktop, they are indeed mounted. I can see them when performing a "df -h" as well as when opening "File System" and drilling to /media - they are both there. I can also access the contents of both volumes within "File System" (using Thunar).4. Using XFCE: I can access both volumes via command line5. Using XFCE: External drives are not affected. I have one external USB drive that shows and when I plug my Android phone, it too shows on the desktop.
After some exploring, I installed the following:Oct 01 22:17:29 Installed: xfce4-mount-plugin-0.5.5-4.fc12.i686I then added "Mount Devices" to my panel, but...as you've probably figured out - they're already mounted.
Here is my /etc/fstab:

Any kde app(dolphin, device notifier...) can't see my internal drive with ntfs and any connected flash drive. I've thought that this is problem with missing dependecies or hal but 'lshal -m' shows messages when J connect flash drive so i don't know where the problem is. I've installed all required and recommended and some optional packages from URL...and it has no effect. Does anybody know what i have to do to make it work.

I am trying to install Ubuntu ver.10.10 server on HP DL360 with 2 internal 36GB untra3 scsi drives. The installations seems to have gone fine but upon booting, the OS is stoping at the BusyBox menu with initramfs prompt. None of my boot or root filesystems is mounted here so I can not go further. I've searched all over the net for answers but nothing seems to work.

I am running OSX Tiger (10.4.11) here on my trusty old G4 MDD with a "giga" 1.4gig CPU accelerator and doing quite well with it actually.I have discovered Gimp and Inkscape and love the open source concept.I registered only a few days ago, and have been lurking around to see if I can get a look at Ubuntu in action.Would it be possible to install some version of Ubuntu on a partition of one of my internal hard drives and be able to boot it, using the option key at power-up time?I guess this would be called a "dual-boot" situation. If so, can someone provide a link as to what to download.

I've used dvd+rw-format -format=full /dev/sr0 and K3B to format a blank DVD RW.I reinsert the disk and it's not seen or auto-mounted as writeable media. In the past, I've written one file to a blank DVD RW in Windows XP, insert the disk back into Linux and I can use Dolphin to read and write to the disk as though it had been auto mounted as a removable storage media device in KDE4.Is there a solution to use a blank DVD RW as an easily accessible, writeable media in Linux?

why my data is being duplicated. I store all my data in BOB so the 26.2 GB of data is expected. I don't store anything in .ecryptfs so the 26.2 GB of data is completely unexpected. Could you please explain why this is happening and how to fix it.

I have a USB hard drive that is called "My Book", which was listed in the Media folder whenever it was connected. Since I upgraded to Lucid, I now have a permanent folder/drive called "My Book" with an X over the folder icon, and whenever I connect the hard drive, it is given the name "My Book_". I can't change anything about the new, permanent folder; apparently I don't have permission. This has meant that all the applications that linked to files on the hard drive - Banshee etc - can no longer find the files because the hard drive now has a different name.
Does anyone know why this has happened and what I can do to fix it - ie. get rid of this new 'drive'. I'm guessing that the reason the underscore is added when I plug the drive in is due to the existing, redundant but unmoveable, drive icon.

I was trying to install some Windows applications in Wine/PlayOnLinux. The result was not very useful for what I wanted and I removed all the application including wine and Playonlinux completely from my computer (9.10 64bit).But I was not really able to completely clean up what I did because when I right click on any files and use "OPEN WITH", I got a LONG list of application with many of them are uninstalled and duplicated.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). And, my ~/.pam_environment looks like the following.
PATH DEFAULT=${PATH}:~/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux
GIT_EDITOR DEFAULT=vim
MANPATH DEFAULT=${MANPATH}:~/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/man
INFOPATH DEFAULT=${INFOPATH}:~/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/info
But, echo $PATH returns me duplicated entries as the following.
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:~/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux:~/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux
I've tried replacing DEFAULT by OVERRIDE in my ~/.pam_environment file. But, that didn't help.

The (WD 320GB) drive has a single ext3 FS on it. It has had some problems in the past, but all were fixed with fsck -y. Now there are several directories with duplicate filenames. The files with duplicated names are hard links of each other, but the names are identical. I've run several diagnostics over them, looking for, eg, non-printing characters in the name, but they are completely identical. Here are some examples:
[code]....
These are (obviously) from a directory of mp3s, but similar duplications occur throughout the fs - there are several thousand files affected. Some of the diagnostics were programmes I wrote that accessed the directory itself (through the dirent structure). I always thought duplicate filenames in the same directory were impossible in unix/linux; this appears to prove me wrong. Am I missing something? (Kernel version 2.4.20 with xfs extensions. The installation was originally Red Hat 7, but I've changed almost everything, so it's probably more accurate to call it a custom distro.)

I reckon I waste several tens of gigabytes of storage by holding unwanted copies of personal data and media files over very many partitions. Sometimes they will have identical names, dates and sizes. Other times they may be slightly different in terms of metadata but nonetheless essentially identical in respect of content. It is becoming a nightmare. Any suggestions for how best to get rid of these unwanted files?

I was looking in a dir I haven't used for a while (I use it for data storage) and found a directory was repeated - that is, two directories with the same name. I renamed one of them, on the assumption that one of them has a non-printing character in its name, and that worked without a problem, but ls -i lists their inodes as the same. ls -l says they both have two inodes (. and ..), and the files they contain have the same names. The inodes of the files is the same (that is, the inode of a file in dir A is the same as the file of the same name in dir B.) Each file in each dir is listed as having only one inode, but it's the same as that in the other dir.

I synced my Music Folders on all my computers with rsync. Now when I open Rhythmbox it shows the mp3s as duplicated. So, every album will have two of track 1 and two of track 2 and so on except for the new records and files that were put into that computers Music Folder because they weren't there before.
So, obviously I am doing something wrong with the path of the files/folders because the rsync must be giving the same file different paths or tags or some such. I know from google searching that Rhythmbox will not display duplicates that are true duplicates.
So, short of simply deleting my music folder on every computer and then putting all of the songs back into it... is there anything I can do?
I should mention that the files/folders are not in reality duplicated. I checked both in the folders and also I opened a folder with VLC and it produced a list of tracks that was not duplicated. Its only Rhythmbox that shows them as duplicates.
I am talking about Rhythmbox on my Fedora 13 64 bit installation.

I noticed this weird behaviour yesterday after the last update (not sure if it's really related, but I didn't notice this before). When I do a fresh start and log in - all the gnome related processes are DOUBLED in the memory Of course it causes weird errors, applet hanging or crashes, very sensible slowness while booting and operating, etc, etc.Basically I have 2 gnome-session loaded at once - one as a child process of gdm-binary and another separate one. Both sessions have all the child process loaded, so I turned out to have 2 Nautilus, 2 Metacity, 2 Gnome-panel, 8 python processes and all the set of applets are also doubled.

The program is a shell script, which executes an environment file, so that path and library settings point correctly. If I have cron run the same program as the same user who logged in, one of the libraries cannot be found.
