Software :: Duplicated Filenames In The Same Directory?

Apr 3, 2011

The (WD 320GB) drive has a single ext3 FS on it. It has had some problems in the past, but all were fixed with fsck -y. Now there are several directories with duplicate filenames. The files with duplicated names are hard links of each other, but the names are identical. I've run several diagnostics over them, looking for, eg, non-printing characters in the name, but they are completely identical. Here are some examples:

[code]....

These are (obviously) from a directory of mp3s, but similar duplications occur throughout the fs - there are several thousand files affected. Some of the diagnostics were programmes I wrote that accessed the directory itself (through the dirent structure). I always thought duplicate filenames in the same directory were impossible in unix/linux; this appears to prove me wrong. Am I missing something? (Kernel version 2.4.20 with xfs extensions. The installation was originally Red Hat 7, but I've changed almost everything, so it's probably more accurate to call it a custom distro.)

Hardware :: Duplicated Directory On Ext3 Filesystem?

Jul 11, 2010

I was looking in a dir I haven't used for a while (I use it for data storage) and found a directory was repeated - that is, two directories with the same name. I renamed one of them, on the assumption that one of them has a non-printing character in its name, and that worked without a problem, but ls -i lists their inodes as the same. ls -l says they both have two inodes (. and ..), and the files they contain have the same names. The inodes of the files is the same (that is, the inode of a file in dir A is the same as the file of the same name in dir B.) Each file in each dir is listed as having only one inode, but it's the same as that in the other dir.

beach---------20090808-110000.ogg
beach---------20090808-120000.ogg

It's like this:

beach---------20090808-110000_01.mp3
beach---------20090808-110000_02.mp3
and so on....

the 00, 01, 02 and up are the minutes it has splitted it. Now I need a script, after it did this, to rename the file names into this:

beach---------20090808-110000.mp3

General :: Getting Duplicated Entries In $PATH?

Apr 28, 2010

PATH DEFAULT=${PATH}:~/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux
GIT_EDITOR DEFAULT=vim
MANPATH DEFAULT=${MANPATH}:~/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/man
INFOPATH DEFAULT=${INFOPATH}:~/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/info

But, echo $PATH returns me duplicated entries as the following.

/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:~/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux:~/Adobe/Reader9/bin:~/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux

I've tried replacing DEFAULT by OVERRIDE in my ~/.pam_environment file. But, that didn't help.

Ubuntu :: USB Drive Duplicated After Upgrade

Jun 7, 2010

I have a USB hard drive that is called "My Book", which was listed in the Media folder whenever it was connected. Since I upgraded to Lucid, I now have a permanent folder/drive called "My Book" with an X over the folder icon, and whenever I connect the hard drive, it is given the name "My Book_". I can't change anything about the new, permanent folder; apparently I don't have permission. This has meant that all the applications that linked to files on the hard drive - Banshee etc - can no longer find the files because the hard drive now has a different name.

Does anyone know why this has happened and what I can do to fix it - ie. get rid of this new 'drive'. I'm guessing that the reason the underscore is added when I plug the drive in is due to the existing, redundant but unmoveable, drive icon.

Software :: Managing Duplicated Files

I reckon I waste several tens of gigabytes of storage by holding unwanted copies of personal data and media files over very many partitions. Sometimes they will have identical names, dates and sizes. Other times they may be slightly different in terms of metadata but nonetheless essentially identical in respect of content. It is becoming a nightmare. Any suggestions for how best to get rid of these unwanted files?

Fedora :: When Open Rhythmbox It Shows The Mp3s As Duplicated

Dec 13, 2010

I synced my Music Folders on all my computers with rsync. Now when I open Rhythmbox it shows the mp3s as duplicated. So, every album will have two of track 1 and two of track 2 and so on except for the new records and files that were put into that computers Music Folder because they weren't there before.

So, obviously I am doing something wrong with the path of the files/folders because the rsync must be giving the same file different paths or tags or some such. I know from google searching that Rhythmbox will not display duplicates that are true duplicates.

So, short of simply deleting my music folder on every computer and then putting all of the songs back into it... is there anything I can do?

I should mention that the files/folders are not in reality duplicated. I checked both in the folders and also I opened a folder with VLC and it produced a list of tracks that was not duplicated. Its only Rhythmbox that shows them as duplicates.

I am talking about Rhythmbox on my Fedora 13 64 bit installation.

Fedora X86/64bit :: All Gnome Related Processes Are Duplicated

Feb 18, 2011

I noticed this weird behaviour yesterday after the last update (not sure if it's really related, but I didn't notice this before). When I do a fresh start and log in - all the gnome related processes are DOUBLED in the memory Of course it causes weird errors, applet hanging or crashes, very sensible slowness while booting and operating, etc, etc.Basically I have 2 gnome-session loaded at once - one as a child process of gdm-binary and another separate one. Both sessions have all the child process loaded, so I turned out to have 2 Nautilus, 2 Metacity, 2 Gnome-panel, 8 python processes and all the set of applets are also doubled.

OpenSUSE :: Fix Invalid Filenames In Thunderbird

Jun 5, 2010

I want to travel for a while and need winfdows 7 for that. I want to copy my Linux Thunderbird profile with many years of emails across to windows7 then back to Linux when I'm finished with win 7. I copy the "profiles" folder at ~/.thunderbird/profiles folder over to win 7. Being thorough, I then run the windows app "chkdsk" to see if windows dislikes what I did in a filesystem context. Chkdsk finds three illegal filenames in the copied folder. The filenames contain colons.

They are as follows:
a directory named "mailbox:"
a directory named "mailbox:.sdb"
a file named "mailbox:.msf"

I try to manipulate them in windows (e.g. rename, delete, open, whatever) and get error messages about invalid names. It sounds to me like the items really are corrupt. So now I have a partially corrupted Thunderbird that works in Linux and doesn't work in windows and has years of emails in it. How do I straighten out Thunderbird in Linux? (I'll worry about windows later)

list filenames one-per-line, in BASH without including directories. I think he was either wrong or making that up. There is a way to list just the names and one per line but there aren't any arguments I can find that can be used to exclude directories.

Code:

IFS=', '; files=`ls -m`; for i in $files; do if [ -f $i ]; then echo $i; fi; done That does only use ls as a command, however he said his GSI thought he could do it without all that...
