Since upgrading to Maverick, the Update manager will not install the Google update as it says that this "Requires installation of untrusted packages"
What needs to go into the Sources file to get around this? I used to have a gui for doing this, but Maverick appears to have scribbled this as well.

i just installed filelight and was surprised it requires so many packages. It is not at all evident to me why filelight would require phonon or libaudio. About all the other packages I am not sure at all, but it seems such a simple utility ... This is 10.04.1

I am trying to get Ubuntu 11.04 onto this but it says it requires 4.4g of space but the iso is only 700mb. I am not sure but I think the SSD is only 4gb. It wont install because it says it requires 4.4g I know this isn't the case because Ubuntu doesn't take that much space. How do I get it to install?

Since I never got an answer to my last question:I'll ask something simpler. When Ubuntu is booting up, what directories are used for the boot process up until it mounts other drives (such as an SD card).hink that question makes sense, don't hesitate to ask forclarification, though.

On Launchpad there is the following thread on ureadahead:
[URL]
Is it sensible to remove "ureadahead" until this is fixed or is there no harm done? As a normal user ... (yes still I have /var in a separate partition, because I want to be on the safe side with my databases located in /var when reinstalling or upgrading the system ... - by the way: does this make sense or is it better to just have /home separate and use a backup of /var folders?) ... as a normal user I feel a bit lost with bugs like this. It would be nice to get some information somewhere. Something like:
"Don't worry, just wait for an update with a bugfix!"
or
"To avoid further problems just remove 'ureadahead' until it's fixed!"

After upgrading Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04, the cron daemon no longer runs automatically upon starting up the machine; I need to enter "sudo service cron start" to get it running. Is there a way to get it to start up by itself?

I am trying to install a program named "Ntrip" with wine, running Linux Mint 10 64bit (based on Ubuntu 10.04) I installed the software without problems, when I try to start it I get the following error:
Code:
fixme:actctx:parse_manifest_buffer root element is L"asmv1:assembly", not <assembly>
wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables
As far as I know, mono is by default on every Ubuntu 10.04 installation, however as per the error message, I installed the Windows version of Mono via Wine successfully. Trying to start the program again, still coming up with above error.

When booting from the Ubuntu 11.04 CD, it asks for user name and password to install. I downloaded the iso twice and did a checksum. Do I need a user name and password before installing? What is the user name and password? I read the documentation and cannot find any entry about user name and password needed when booting fron CD.

I'm trying to set a kickstart DVD for automatically installing Fedora 10 without touching the existing data partitions on our systems. I've got a kickstart file that works great from a kickstart server however I'm having issues with creating an unattended kickstart DVD. I've attached a copy of the kickstart file from the DVD. For some reason even though all the packages we are installing are on the DVD, anaconda always attempts to connected to the internet to get repository information after completing the partitioning. I have changed the install type to 'cdrom' before anyone asks! I have removed my %pre and %post sections as these just copy in some config files and do not touch anything other than local paths.

"The playback of this movie requires a SMB protocol source plugin which is not installed." I get this error when I try to play a movie from a samba share. This is a fresh install of Fedora 10 KDE. I installed all the necessary codecs using the rpmfusion repo. Movies play fine if I transfer them to my computer.

I downloaded a driver for my printer today and I opened it in the terminal. Then a window popped up saying "This opporation requires root (administrative) privileges. Please enter the administrative password below:" I typed in the same password that I use when authorizing the installation of programs from the Ubuntu Software Center and I tried it multiple times. Each time, it rejects the password. I even tried downloading something else from the software center, just to make sure the password was correct, but the system had no problem with the password when downloading from the software center. So, is my software center password different from my administrator password?

I'm trying to install Squeeze onto a new DELL Vostro 1520 laptop. The Windows Device Manager says it is Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
During the network card detection phase, it prompts to install missing firmware file rtl8168d-1.fw from removable media. I understand that this is a non-free blob removed from kernel v2.6.32.

If you have a Radeon graphics chip and upgrade to Jessie, install firmware-linux-nonfree, before rebooting.
My dist-upgrade to Jessie seemed flawless until I rebooted and couldn't get into X.
Seems Jessie boots into Gnome by default, but Gnome now requires 3-D acceleration. For my Radeon graphics chip (ATI Radeon 3100), this requires firmware-linux-nonfree, which I didn't need before and was not installed as part of the upgrade.
A boot message alerted me to this need.
I was able to get X going with xinit. I used FVWM; for XFCE I believe the command is:
xinit /usr/bin/xfce4-session -- :1
and from there I installed the package firmware-linux-nonfree.

When I installed lucid, I opted not to install GRUB as I leave that job to a small 'rescue' Arch Linux install somewhere else on the drive. However, some recent upgrade (I'm having difficulty figuring out which one exactly) claims to require the packages 'grub-pc' and 'grub-common'.
I'm not sure but surely this is a mistake. Right? And if so, what are my options? Does installing the packages automatically install grub (ubuntu-grub, that is) to the (insert word for that first part of the HD where the bootloader resides....?) Or will I have to manually tweak the package installation to avoid installing?

I tried to copy a CD with Brasero. Brasero said: "All required applications and libraries are not installed. Please install manually and try again:
toc2cue (application)
cdrdao (application)
toc2cue (application)
cdrdao (application)".
Ignoring that each was listed twice, I first ran sudo apt-get update on the terminal, then ran
sudo apt-get install cdrdao
I tried another copy operation, but this time:
The error message for a missing toc2cue was no longer there, but there were still 2 error messages for a missing cdrdao, which I had just installed! I tried installing cdrdao again; but got the message that the latest cdrdao was already installed. I tried installing toc2cue but got the message that it could not be found. how I can get cdrdao to be recognized and toc2cue to get installed?
