After using wubi, it's taken around 80GB off of an NTFS drive. The drive is now in an external USB enclosure, how do I reclaim the space? Windows XP's partition software, Partition Magic, and even Mount Manager on my laptop running Leeenux all see the drive as being smaller than it started out, the partitions created by wubi are invisible to them.
View 1 RepliesI started getting this warning that my Home partition disk space was running low, so I ran a disk space analyzer which only told me that I was using about 650 MB. Since I had 5 GB allocated to the home partition, I knew that something was not right. After manually going through all of the primary subdirectories on home, I found the culprit, namely an unexecuted game installation directory taking up about 4.5 GB. So I deleted the files, but then I didn't get my disk space back. I rebooted, no change. I ran this program called sfill, part of Secure Delete, which is supposed to wipe the directory 38 times and totally clean everything off. Still, no change. Any ideas how to reclaim my disk space?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted, on my laptop, to clone a 60GB HDD into a 500GB HDD using clonezilla (Parted Magic live cd). So I used the option disk2image, create the image file to an USB Drive. Everything was fine, I get my image file on that ext HDD. After I change the HDD on my laptop for the brand new 500GB but I think I make a mistake when restoring the image file using image2disk instead of image2partition. Now my 500gb is recognised as a 60GB hdd on gparted. How can I reclaim original HDD space on my 500GB?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have logical partitions on my drive numbered /dev/sda5 through /dev/sda14.I want to reclaim unused space from one of the partitions in the middle /dev/sda7. First I intend to resize /dev/sda7 by leaving the beginning of the partition as is and shrinking the end to create some unallocated space between /dev/sda7 and /dev/sda8. Then I would like to create a new logical partition in this unallocated space. My question is what will be the device name of the newly created logical partition? Will it be /dev/sda15 (I hope)? Or will it be /dev/sda8 and all partitions after this be renamed?
The GParted manual states that if a partition is deleted, all of the following partitions will be renamed, but it doesn't say anything specifically about renaming partitions after adding a new partition in the middle of a partition table.
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 using Wubi. During the install I allocated 100Gb to Ubuntu, is there any way without reinstalling of extending this, I want to give Ubuntu another 50Gb.

My problem now is it failed a second time now because I did two attempts of 30 gig installs I am missing 60 gigs hard drive space and cant figure out how to recover the lost space. I have uninstalled Wubi / Ubuntu from programs but still no recovery. It needs to be recovered so I can dual boot properly given that I use Ubuntu and Windows

I know the OS takes about 3 GB and I didn't install 7 GB worth applications. I'm thinking some how it confused itself. I've done run the Disk Analysis And it's rather confusing, but it seems to be looking at more then its alloted 10 GB.

Even after terminating the programs (I have three instances ripping DVD's simultaneously) there is still a lot of memory not accounted for. (memory used is a gig or so more than the total used by the processes listed)Is there any way I can reclaim that memory please? Some form of memory flushing system? I've searched but I can't find anything.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a single PC that has two hard disks in it. One is 250GB running Debian linux; the other 1TB running windows. I was switching between the two by going to the BIOS and changing the order of the hard disks to boot from. Both lived happily together in peaceful co-existance. Until....
Lately, I haven't been using Linux, so I decided to convert the 250GB to windows. So I put in the windows install CD, and it all started working fine, but when it came down to setting up a partition, Windows only recognized 130GB (out of the 250GB). I got confused so I decided to re-install linux. Linux recognizes the full 250GB; it recognized that there is a second hard disk running a different OS so the grub gave the option to boot from windows. So after a couple of reboots from both drives I decided to go ahead and install windows on the 250GB. Well again, windows only recognized 130GB, but this time, windows showed me another hard disk again with 130GB capacity. Apparently I stupid enough to proceed so now both hard disks - the 250GB and the 1TB - have capacity of 130GB each. And this is where I'm stuck.
I have tried fdisk, I have tried debug, but for some reason, windows can only recognize 130GB out of the entire disks; linux on the other hand recognizes the full capacity. I also used the seagate disk diagnostic tool (seatools for MS DOS) and it found no errors on either hard disk.
How can I reclaim the full capacity under windows?
How to recover from a failed OpenSUSE install. The situation is that I have a striped RAID set up on two 500Gb drives running Windows. I wanted a dual boot setup, and I tried to install OpenSUSE but it failed with a Grub error 18. This, I understand, is caused by my BIOS not being able to access the part of the drive with the /boot on. Because I have two 500 Gb disks, the OpenSUSE /boot partition is beyond the BIOS's addressing range.
The recommended solution seems to be to put the /boot at the start of the HDD - but then I'd need to move Windows after it somewhere. But I don't know how to do that and it seems a risky, longwinded business. I've given up on the OpenSUSE install. My problem is that the failed install has grabbed about half of the diskspace for its purposes. Question therefore is: how can I reclaim that space for Windows?
Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?
1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)
2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?
i just tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (x86) on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop (with a Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card) with Wubi. A normal installation try resulted in an unreadable screen after boot (see attachment). I then managed to get the installation going by modifiing the boot options like shown in this HowTo: [URL] After the installation Wubi automatically rebooted the system without any prompt, so that i couldn't install the proper Nvidia drivers (is there a way to prevent wubi from doing that?) like described in the HowTo. After the reboot the graphics were messed up again.
Boot parameters like "text" "single" or vga=xxx didn't work, adding nomodest and nouveau.modset again didn't help either (I think "text" acutally brings up the console, but i just see an unreadable "blacker" screen than normal). Is there an boot option for grub to disable all nvidia related drivers and the graphical login manager and just show a text based console? Or force the gfx driver to be the same as in the installation process (which was perfect...native resolution, no graphical errors until the reboot) (i tried xforcevesa without any luck; nosplash and removing quiet/splash does work - the bootup process is readable, but as soon as the login manager starts its messed up again)
I installed Ubuntu using wubi, But I didnt assign much space, probably like 17 gigs or something. My geting a pop up everytime my ubuntu starts up saying i got low disk space, very low disk space, Im runing ubuntu 10.10. How do I add more disk space? How do i make the partition bigger.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm very new to Linux and Ubuntu (about 2 days) and am having a hard time getting Ubuntu to work. I'm not completely sure that I'm posting in the right forum since I have several issues. I can't tell what's causing what.
I'm using the wubi installer for version 10.10 (i386 - 32 bit). I have an AMD 64-bit, but the wubi installer for that only crashes when I try to boot it the very first time. I get a blank screen and my tower is silent. Version 10.04 does the same. Version 10.10 is the only one that gets me somewhere.
So, I installed ndiswrapper and the proper driver for my USB adapter. Now I have 2 main problems:
1). the most relevant to this board is that when I use the update manager to get all 135 updates, I'm prompted to reboot to complete the installation. When I do that, i get the same blank screen and silent tower treatment. Oddly enough however, when I went back to windows, uninstalled ubuntu, then reinstalled it again using wubi, the update manager said that I already updated an hour ago (!?!?.. I assume it's still reading the old files from the previous install attempt). Unfortunately I messed it up anyway trying to fix my second problem...
2). my internet connection fails here and there. I don't know if it's ndiswrapper or the driver or what. Once it fails, it won't reconnect. I have to go into ndiswrapper, delete the current driver and reinstall it. This has happened to me while on the internet (scouring these forums) and while downloading the updates and whenever it feels like it.
Also, the system does freeze up on me here and there as well. Sometimes when I'm using ndiswrapper. Sometimes when I'm authenticating myself. Sometimes in update manager and sometimes in synaptic. Right now it's working. But I haven't updated yet and I'm afraid to try.
I want to put ubuntu on it for daily use and keep windows for games. Have done the wubi process but desktop ubuntu takes forever to boot. Ubuntu Netbook Remix seems like the best idea but I want to do it via wubi so as not to loose windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 10.04 with wubi and I encounter a strange error:
At first, everything runs normally. Then I am asked to reboot the system.
After rebooting, Ubuntu starts with a GUI (desktop background, my USB-Mouse is working) and a Window appears ("completing installation" and some advertisement).
A dialog tells me, that the systems tries to set the time (probably from an NTP Server). This is shown with a completion bar, starting at 571% and going up to 800% in several steps. Then it says: "Installation des Grundsystems".
Next steps: creating ext4 file system, copying files ... Again, a progression bar appears, going up to 28%.
Then, an error message appears: "Datei entspricht nicht ihrer Quelle auf der CD/DVD" (file does not match the source on CD/DVD).
It gives me a filename(e.g. /target/usr/lib/smbcquotas) and the choice to Abort/Retry/Skip. I click on "Retry" ("Skip" has exactly the same effekt).
The progress bar goes up to 38%, and I can hear that files are copied. Then the system hangs, showing the desktop wallpaper, mouse functioning. I can only turn it off.
I can try this procedure several times. I even used different disks (one brand new). It always comes to the same end. The only thing that changes are the file names ut gives me. I think that the error message is misleading. Probably there is another error behind the scenes.
I had ubuntu running in wubi just fine for several weeks. I had to do some system reconfiguration which forced me to re-initialize the whole drive that wubi was installed in. I saved the whole ubuntu directory thinking I could just re-install wubi, rename the new ubuntu directory, copy in the old ubuntu directory in it's place and life would be good. Not so.
I found an article which seemed to cover this sort of scenario so I tried the following:
- Installed wubi
- Made sure it booted
- Didn't complete the installation--rebooted to windows
- Replaced just the root.disk file from the old installation, overwriting the newly created root.disk file.
- Booted wubi
- I get the grub menu, then after that I get the following error message:
