Installation :: How To Install Ubuntu 11.04 With Windows 7

May 31, 2011

I am new to Ubuntu, i have tested this software 6 month back Ubuntu 10.10 version, dual boot with Windows 7. I liked this OS, however for a Windows user its looks difficult initially, i know after spending some time and learning with this OS, it will be easier day by day. I want to install its 11.4 version in my another Laptop, but afraid to loose the data as i encountered this happening just a week before with my friends Machine. I have three partition in my Laptop, C has Windows 7 (70GB) than D Partition has 70 GB Space and E partition has 160 GB space, I need step by step guidelines to Install 11.04 in my Drive "E" Where i can make another Partition for Ubuntu using Windows 7 Shrink Volume utility. I need installation guide from experts to not loosing data as i do not have any other portable hard drive to take back up.
Please Guide me what will the best for me, if i have Total 80 GB (Allocated Drive) space for Ubuntu, i.e /root, / Home, Swap (I have 2GB RAM) etc , Waiting for some Expert guidelines.

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Windows Partition - Install Files On A Non Windows NTFS Partition

Jul 22, 2010

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Over Windows 7?

Jul 28, 2010

I just bought a new lap top, and I can't get the Ubuntu install to work. I've installed Ubuntu on other computers about 6 times or so, but always over a Windows XP or Vista operating system, this is the first time I've tried to install it over Windows 7.I tried using a CD and a boot stick, but it still boots into Windows rather than booting from the device. I've checked the boot setup and it's setup right, to boot from the USB/CD depending on which one I attempted, but no cigar, still loads up Windows instead. I'm at a loss. The computer is an Acer Aspire 5251-1513AMD processor V120 2.2GHz2 G DDR3 RAM

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Install The Windows 7

Oct 23, 2010

I installed Ubuntu because I "accidentally" formatted my originally Windows 7 Dell Inspiron 1545. After I formatted this laptop, I tried to install Windows 7 again using the CD that came with the laptop, but an error kept coming up. I asked around on Windows 7 forums and they told me that it meant that the CD was corrupt and a possible solution was to install it using a USB thumb drive. I got impatient and installed Ubuntu instead. Now, I want to install Windows 7 alongside Ubuntu. How do I do that?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Windows 7 Again?

Aug 7, 2011

I just installed Linux, but could'nt manage wine to work with .exe files, the problem is that when i open up a .exe it shutsdown 2 seconds after it opens.Well i decided to uninstall Ubuntu and install Windows 7 again, but then again i got a problem. I plugged in my Windows 7 disk and restarted my computer then getting the boot cofnigure up, i changed the boot settings to "boot from CD/DVD" but it wasnt able to boot from the pc. I tried to read some guides and they all said that i should reboot with some "floppy" linux cd type in "fdisk" in a command prompt, witch i have no clue what is. I tried to put my Ubuntu cd in my computer and boot from that but that did'nt work. Am i stuck with Ubuntu? I won't give a da** if i could fix the wine problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install On Windows Virtual PC?

May 1, 2010

I'd like to install the 10.04 32-bit inside a Windows7 VirtualPC.Got the cd burned, and my virt-pc set up (1 GB RAM, 16GB fixed size virtual disk).I started up the virt-pc, and it automatically booted up from the cd, getting as far as asking me what language I'd like to use, but after selecting English and pressing enter, the virtual-pc window just blinked away.Subsequent attempts to start the virt-pc result in a window popping up, listing some text (free memory, can't read the rest -- too fast), which then blinks away almost immediately.

I was using these URL... directions as a guide.Anyone know if this should work? Or should I go with VirtualBox?The host pc is running 64-bit-win7-pro, amd quad-core, 4gb ram, lots of free disk, in case any of that matters.

Ubuntu Installation :: Restoring MBR After Windows 7 Install?

Jul 23, 2010

I hope this is the right sub-forum for a question like this. It seemed like the best match from what I could find, but my issue stems from installing Windows 7 after I already had Ubuntu installed. I don't know what details are important, so I'll be as thorough as I can. I was running Ubuntu 9.10 on a machine with two SATA hard drives. I was only using one since Ubuntu kept complaining that the second drive was having some issues. The drive with Ubuntu had only two partitions, one tiny one for the swap and the rest of the hard drive was the second partition.

I needed to install Windows for my work, and since I was not very familiar with the whole partition thing (which is the reason why the hard drive was basically one huge partition) I decided to follow this guide: [URL]... I backed up my important data, I used a live CD to create a new partition for windows, I backed up my MBR using the command given, and installed Windows 7. Everything went pretty smoothly. Now, whenever I boot up I don't get a choice of what OS to boot, it just goes straight to Windows, as expected.

I used the same live CD to restore the MBR using the command given on the guide, but I get this error:
dd: opening `/media/sda/mbr.bin': No such file or directory

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi And Windows XP 32-bit Install?

Sep 9, 2010

I'm an experienced Ubuntu user and thus far avoided the need to ask too many questions, but this one's a bit of an odd one.. I want to run 10.04 on my XP pro SP2 box at work so I thought perhaps I could run it via Windows by using Wubi - usually I dual-boot or run independently. However due to several factors this isn't possible in this instance, so rather than intall VMWare and all that palava, I figured Wubi would do the trick. Not used it before tho

The installer starts ok, but once it starts to download the install files it interferes with my network connection to the point where all my connections suddenly drop, and the install fails. I don't know wtf it's actually doing at this stage, because my SSH sessions to other machines seem to persist but I can no longer browse the web, IM loses connection (both MSN and Skype) - which could indicate it's interfering with my DNS? Even after closing the installer I just can't do anything without having to reboot the machine.

I just grabbed the latest installer from the site and ran the install. I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong - but for some reason this clearly does not work on this machine. Am I missing something before I give up and try another tactic? It's turning into an awful lot of effort just to use one piggin' app...

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into 10.04 After Windows XP Install

Oct 1, 2010

I have two hard disks: 160GB and 1TB. I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on the 1TB drive (sdb). Then I installed Windows Xp on the 160GB drive (sda) following which I could no longer boot into Ubuntu (as Windows XP boots straight away). I have already tried to repair GRUB2 using the Live CD using the commands:

# fdisk -l (shows sdb5 to be the 'Linux' partition)
# mkdir /media/sdb5
# mount /dev/sdb5 /media/sdb5
# grub-install --root-directory=/media/sdb5 /dev/sdb

The above procedure shows success but I still don't get the GRUB menu.

Installation :: Removing Windows 7, Install Ubuntu 10.10 Only?

Issue:I currently have a dual boot Windows 7 PC (Toshiba Satellite A100-756 with 250GB HDD and 3GB RAM, 32-bit).What I want to do is format the HDD (removing both partitions) and make a clean install of Ubuntu only.I tried for several hours last night to achieve this using Ubuntu 10.10 and Pendrive, but with no success. System would not boot from USB stick.

How do I: 1. Format the HDD and remove the partitions using only Ubuntu on a USB stick?

2. Install Ubuntu and partition the HDD ready to copy over my backed up files?

Installation :: Install Windows From A Ubuntu Desktop?

I've found ways to do it from inside windows, but never from inside Ubuntu, any ideas?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install From Windows Or Other Live Cd

Apr 29, 2011

I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 and wish to do a clean installation since it has become very cluttered with programs (I had the ooh, that looks like a cool free program I can download and then never use it again syndrome for a while). Since I've been doing some sound stuff with my computer, I decided to try Ubuntu Studio. Anyway, I am at college and do not have any cds available to be able to burn the image on. Is there a way to install Ubuntu onto my current partition (yes, I want to back everything up and erase what is on this partition) without burning the .iso to a disk. I have a Ubuntu 10.04 live disk and a Windows 7 partition on my hard drive. Is this possible with what I have and can anyone give me instructions or link me to something showing how? (I googled for a bit, but must have been missing the magic keywords if it's out there.)
