Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot With 2.6.38-8-generic-pae

Apr 8, 2011

recently I upgraded to test Ubuntu Natty. It's very unstable, so I don't recommend you trying it yet.

Anyways, the thing is that when I upgraded it build two new kernels 2.6.38-8-generic-pae and 2.6.38-8-generic. For some reason when I boot with 2.6.38-8-generic-pae nothing happens, and I can boot only with 2.6.38-8-generic. So I have a couple of questions:

1) What's the difference between the pae kernel and the generic kernel

2) Does anybody else experience this problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Error "modprobe: FATAL Could Not Load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 Generic Modules No Such File Or Directory"

Apr 14, 2011

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.

When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

Slackware :: Two Generic Kernels In /boot Directory?

Sep 4, 2010

lately I compiled the 2.6.35 kernel and met the following problem: the kernel I get it is a generic kernel so I have two generic kernels. I want to have a possibility to boot both kernels: the new and the old one. I cannot resolve the problem of a creating initrd as mkinitrd run for the new kernel would overwrite the initrd.gz generated for the old kernel. So , I make a new directory where I put this new kernel. Is there a way to have both kernels together in /boot ?

Slackware :: How To Modify Grub To Boot Using Generic Kernel

Feb 16, 2011

My Slackware boots using the huge kernel. I am not using LILO; I am using GRUB from the extras directory on the DVD. I followed the tutorial @ [URL] up to the point where it discusses modifying LILO. My /boot/grub/menu.lst reads, in part:

# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Slackware Linux on (/dev/sda7)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends

This boots the huge kernel. What changes must I make to the above menu.lst entry to boot using the generic kernel?

Ubuntu Installation :: 2.6.35-25-generic Won't Install?

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a USb drive, using the 4gb persistence option, and tried to install all available updates. The process went smoothly until it tried to update the kernel, and it just refuses to do that. I now only have 1.5gb of space left, that might possibly be causing the problem?Here's the terminal output of sudo dpkg --configure -a

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: Hangs After 2.6.31-17-generic Update

Jan 9, 2010

I did an update recently and it won't continue booting past a certain point - which I think is rather strange, the last message I can manage to see is:

Code:
* Starting init crypto dicks...

No. That's not a typo. I couldn't believe my own eyes - I took a picture: [URL]

I can guarantee you this is not a joke. I suspect my video card is aging on me as I get a 'London Pound" symbol on my CLI terminal sometimes.

Anyway, that's not the real issue for me. I cannot start into 2.6.31-17, but I can start into 2.6.31-16 - is anyone else having this problem?

Edit: Restarting doesn't give me the crypto dicks thing but I still get another common error:

Code:
init: ureadahead-other main process (###) terminated with status 4

Ubuntu Installation :: 17 - 14-generic On GRUB - Only 14 - Works

Jan 27, 2010

I've played about with Live CD's and sort of got it working on a PS3, but that's about it. Now, my problem.

Basically, what happened is that I installed Ubuntu 9.10, and then I installed whatever updates it wanted, and then ...17-generic pops up, but doesn't do anything other than load up a terminal type thing full screen.

Here's everything GRUB says.

Quote:

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be part of the updates I did, but to be completely honest I'm not even slightly certain.

I don't know if there's any more info you'd need from me about my computer, but if there is could you tell me how to find it.

So the questions I'm asking really: Is meant to be an updated version? and if so, How do I make it do what it's meant to do?

After installing Ubuntu my Windows XP BSOD's on startup. I have posted in a Windows forum, but they seem to be terrified that I've used the word "Ubuntu" or maybe I'm being plain impatient. Do you know of anywhere which specialises in dual-boot problems or something? Thanks again

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Always Boots Kernel 2.6.32.24-generic?

Jan 9, 2011

I just noticed I'm not running with the latest kernel.

This box was originally installed as Ubuntu 10.04, then upgraded to 10.10.

I just recently noticed that, even though kernel 2.6.35-24-generic is installed, this box seems to insist on booting up with 2.6.32-24-generic.

Looking at /boot/menu.lst, it looks ok. (default is 0, and first kernel in list is 2.6.35-24. 2.5.32-24 is the *last* one in the list!)

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Use Nvidia With Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-23-generic

Upgraded to latest kernel 2.6.32-23. Ubuntu 10.04 I run a twinview video configuration of 2 screens @ 1920x1200. On booting, X wanted to go to low res for the session, which reverted to one screen (that is, I lost the twin view), but actually kept the 1920x1200 res on the one. I restarted X on got both screen working with the second as a replica of the first. Something has changed in this version of the kernel. Reverted to the previous Kernel version (22) and all is sweet (twin view is back working). But this can only be a temporary workaround.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-23-generic-pae Breaks Fglrx

Jun 30, 2010

I have an ATI radeon HD 3400 series video card, and the open-source drivers make my computer run really hot. I tried installing FGLRX by using "Check For New Hardware Drivers", but it did not work, so I installed the ATI catalyst 10.5 package from AMD's website, and am using Xserver-xorg-core-1.7.6-2ubuntu7+backclear1 from k0ekk0ek's PPA so there is no lag when minimizing windows and such.

Everything was perfect until the 2.6.32-23 kernel update came along. I let it update, and rebooted, but the ATI driver no longer starts, even when I uninstall and reinstall it.

I am just using the 2.6.32-22 kernel for now, as the 2.6.32-23 kernel still runs hot without the ATI driver enabled. I would like to start using the new kernel at some point...

Ubuntu Installation :: Generic Update And Sound/wifi Broken?

Mar 7, 2011

I just upgraded (included kernel updates) using the normal update manager on my wife's Dell 1420 Inspiron Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS with security, proposed and backports. After the upgrade reboot the sound and wifi were broken--- the system reported there was no hardware. I suspect this is simply a bug with the new kernel. A couple years ago a similar bug to the sound driver forced us to skip a kernel. I suppose I should file a bug report about this somewhere?

It is simple enough to boot into the previous kernel where sound/wifi do function, for now. However I'm also getting a strange dependency problem for the packages linux-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic These packages "have been kept back" according to aptitude. They are stuck at 2.6.24.28.30. I'm unable to force install them to the newer 2.6.24.29.31 to match the other latest installed packages and the latest kernel listed on the GRUB menu. I wonder if the reason the sound and wifi are broken is that these won't update.

If I try to update the aptitude dialogue gives me solutions with +259 to remove the linux-generic package. But isn't that an important package that I need? Why is it suggesting I remove these? Maybe they are obsolete meta-packages? I can't get it to install 2.6.24.29 no matter what I do. I removed and then installed these packages and none of that get the sound working. To remove and install I had to run aptitude and it would give me solutions saying -29000 but I did it anyway to try and force it. None of it worked so I just put it back to the way it was, with the "held back" 2.6.24.28. I don't really understand package dependency.

Ubuntu Installation :: Generic - Pae Fails But Older Version Works

May 2, 2011

After a massive meltdown with the upgrade, I finally got the system put back together. Had to reinstall grub. It now defaults to a version that says "Generic - pae". When choosing this from the grub menu, it always hangs on the Ubuntu splash screen; however, I found that when I choose "previous Linux versions" from the grub menu, then choose the Ubuntu-generic, everything works fine - other than my initial bad impression of unity - but it works, at least.

why my default choice in grub doesn't work, and what I need to do to fix it? Below is a cut and paste from /boot/grub/grub.cfg. The first entry is the one that does NOT work, and the first entry after "submenu" is the entry that DOES work.

menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic-pae (recovery mode)' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-23-generic Broke My LVM - RAID And GRUB

Jul 4, 2010

I recently updated the kernel to the newest version(2.6.32-23-generic) using the update manager and now I am unable to boot in to my Lucid installation.

My setup is LVM on top of a RAID 0 array. My computer had been running in this configuration since Lucid was released.

The Error Code I get on Boot is to the effect of: /dev/mapper/ubuntu-os is not available.. and then I get kicked in to Busy Box.

Once in Busy Box if I try to use mdadm to mount the RAID array I get this error:

If I boot in to the live CD I can mount all of the partitions and LVM volumes, so it does not appear to be a failed drive or volume.

I have looked in the mdadm.conf, lvm config and grub config files and searched the "Google" for an answer with no-avail...

Ultimately I would like to find a solution which doesn't involve a re-installation.

Ubuntu Servers :: Lucid X86 Installation Disk - Gets To 17% Copy On Fs-core-modules-2.6.32.21-generic-di And Hangs

Apr 30, 2010

I downloaded the x86 server version for Lucid twice today. Both times before burn the md5 match those published on the Ubuntu site. I am attempting to install the system on a Dell poweredge 2500. 2x 1.4 gb P4 procs, 1 gb ram, 750 GB HDD (raid) Boot to installer. it goes through the standard language checks, keyboard, checks for cdrom, then attempts to start copying files.

It gets to 17% copy on fs-core-modules-2.6.32.21-generic-di and hangs there for 5 minutes or so. Then comes back with the error that it could not get the file and asks if I want to retry. all retries lead back to this error. As I said, MD5 is exact, burner does not complain of a bad burn, and disk is closed at the end of the burn. so, has anyone else been able to install Lucid server x86? burned four disks today, one pair on two different burners. All fail at 17% retrieving that file.

Ubuntu :: How To Disable USB Generic Multicard

Oct 25, 2010

I have a Medion Akoya E1212 netbook (which is an ALDI rebrand of the MSI Wind netbook) and naturally I'm trying to get the longest battery life possible Already running Ubuntu (Lucid) Netbook Edition (though Moblin seems interesting too) and of course keeping a close look at powertop.One of the things powertop can do, is disable unused USB devices [with the 'U' key]. There is, however, one persistent USB device that keeps popping up in powertop's list no matter how often I press 'U': my SD-card drive (which is apparently internally connected via USB). And it appears in the list regardless of whether I have inserted an SD-card in it or not.

When I use Nautilus to navigate to computer://, I can see the SD-card drive as an icon named "USB Generic Multicard", sitting next to my internal harddisk. I can rightclick and "eject" it, causing the icon to disappear, and the entry in powertop's list disappears as well.My question, is there a way to make sure that the "USB Generic Multicard" USB device doesn't mount at all during startup? [Or, preferably that it detects whether an SD card it present (rarely) to decide whether to mount or not].And if anyone knows the command-line command to "eject" the USB Generic Multicard device, that would also be great cause it would save me starting Nautilus every time (which is slow).

Ubuntu :: Kernel 2.6.35-30-generic & Gnome 2.32.0?

Jun 27, 2011

Just installed the patches/upgrades for the 2.6.35.30 kernel. Ubuntu will not boot without me typing "y" and hitting enter and later hitting the enter key again. Just have a blank screen unless I do this. Discovered what to do by booting into recovery mode. Had to make a display selection. Just guess at the enter key the second time the boot process stopped. I new to Ubuntu so don't know where to look in the logs to provide additional information to help trouble shoot the problem. If some one can guide me as to where to look I'll post log info. Hope this is the right place to post this. If I need to make a bug report let me know.

Forgot to add: HP Pavalion dv5000 (dv5020us to be specific). AMD Turion64 processor. ATI Radeon Mobility 200M video.
