When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,
I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in
safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.
I had 9.10 installed and I did an upgrade to 10.04. However I cannot see anymore my Windows Vista partition with grub.. I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite p305.This is my boot script output:

I just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and now I can't boot into Windows 7 on this dual boot desktop. I usually do a clean install but with a laptop and desktop a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu on each machine it's getting very tiring with 4 os's so opted for the upgrade this time.
During the installation there was a window that game up about upgrading grub and what devices to install it on. The help box was not very complete and seemed to say to click all the check boxes which included the main drive and it's partitions including windows. During the install somewhere it said something like grub could not be installed on one of the devices which I think was sda6 which is probably the Windows 7 partition.
So how would I get the option of booting into Windows 7 on startup as now I only get a blank black screen when I click on the Windows 7 option upon bootup? I hope I don't have to reinstall one or both os's again from scratch as this is becoming to much work to do on two systems every 6 months, especially with the amount of programs I have installed.
how to be able to add windows 7 to my grub menu or to even be able to boot to windows 7. I am currently unable to do it and my system just automatically goes straight to ubuntu. I've tried holding down SHIFT during startup and all that appears in my list is ubuntu entries and a memtest entry. My windows 7 files are still intact because I can see the drive through ubuntu and see all my files. I am trying to have Windows 7 on one hard disk that is 640GB and ubuntu on a second hard disk that is 160GB

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".
I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows XP installed on my laptop. Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr). Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda5,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.4 x64 onto a machine with Vista Ultimate x64. When I boot the machine, the Windows option comes up in the GRUB menu. However, when I attempt to boot Windows, I receive the following error: No such device: de80ab9f80ab7d21. error: No such partition. Press any key to continue...
I looked around and found a similar issue at [URL] However, before trying to fix the issue by guesswork or via solutions that worked for a similar, though not necessarily identical problem. I've run the boot info script (see output below) mentioned several places on this site as a valuable input for boot problem tracking. how to get Windows to boot on my computer?

I'm trying to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu WITHOUT using Grub. This is to support Bitlocker encryption.
I followed this guide, and now when I select Ubuntu I get a Grub> prompt and no ubuntu.
I feel like I'm halfway there, I just need to get Grub to load correctly or something.
if having a boot partition is recommended for dual boot installation of Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 and why?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Ubuntu on a machine that already has Windows 7 on one partition. Obviously I intend to install it on the other free partition. So I downloaded the iso burnt it onto the disk and pop in the disk and the boot the machine. The installation screen comes up I selected the first option (Try Ubuntu without installation), I just see a prompt after a few seconds and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. Unable to detect a signal, The monitor goes into standby. The same thing happens if I use "install Ubuntu" option as well. I downloaded minimal install version Ubuntu and tried to install with that. since its old school installation, the installation completed without any errors, but when I restart the grub come up and when I select to boot into Ubuntu, I see the same behavior i.e. the screen goes blank and never boots to anything. This is a machine on which I was using 10.4 until yesterday.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got a Toshiba Mini NB305-310 and tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 on it using the .iso file on a flash drive. When I try to boot into Windows XP, the loading screen comes up for a second, flashes blue, then restarts the computer. I'm able to boot up in Ubuntu, but it takes a LONG time with the screen black before it goes to the Ubuntu loading screen. I saw in an earlier post that it's helpful to post the output of the Boot Info Script, so I've posted it below. I'm new to the forums, so if I'm doing anything wrong, please let me know:

After quite a bit of troubleshooting, I have only made my problems dual booting XP and Xubuntu go from bad to worse.
I installed xubuntu on my Windows XP laptop as a dual boot system. (Single 40gb Hard Disk, used xubuntu wizard to repartition XP)
After installation, Windows XP would not boot from the boot menu; it would just go to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner (xubuntu was fine).
So far, I have repair installed (not clean) Windows XP and used the Windows XP recovery console commands "fixboot" and "fixmbr" (fixmbr caused xubuntu to become unbootable with no boot menu) to no avail.
I have 2 HDDs:
HDD 1 (sda) with Windows XP installed on sda1 and four more partions.
HDD 2 (sdb) with three NTFS-Partitions (sdb1, 5 and 6) and Ubuntu 10.04 (sdb7) + Swap-Partition (sdb8).
I would like to boot Ubuntu using the Windows XP boot loader, i.e., having an entry there to choose Ubuntu and start my installation of Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on sdb7 and told the installer to install the grub2 boot loader to /dev/sdb (should it have been /dev/sdb7?). When using the boot selection option of my bios and choosing the second HDD Ubuntu starts without problems.
I used dd if=/dev/sdb of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 to copy the mbr of my second HDD and copied the file bootsect.lnx to my c: drive. Then added C:ootsect.lnk = "Ubuntu Linux" to my Windows boot.ini. When rebooting my computer I get the option "Ubuntu Linux" in the XP boot loader. Choosing it I come to a black screen with a blinking white cursor. All I want to do is not use Grub 2 as my primary boot loader but instead leave my WinXP installation untouched and start Ubuntu from within WinXP boot loader. This has been working just fine with my old Ubuntu installation.
I am trying to run a dual boot system with Windows 7 and an Ubuntu 9.10 installation from a live CD. I am running this on a Dell Inspiron M5030. Both operating systems have installed fine however whenever I run Windows the computer subsequently fails to run Grub upon rebooting and gives the following error message:
Grub loading
the symbol 'ob_bioslgrub?+E?U? Not found
Aborted press any key to exit
The unrecognised symbols are different each time. I have also had (' ') and ('ee*??S ') and ('un'). I cured this initially by reinstalling Ubuntu but after looking at the support documentation have now found that I can cure it temporarily by simply reinstalling Grub using the command:
sudo grub-setup -d /media/dd5d6cd6-cb80-40e0-baf3-13ae1ebe17a4/boot/grub -m /media/dd5d6cd6-cb80-40e0-baf3-13ae1ebe17a4/boot/grub/device.map /dev/sda
I can then run Ubuntu fine, however upon running Windows again the problem reoccurs and Grub will not run.
i have downloaded the desk version of unbuntu on my mac, as it downloads well and my PC does not.i burned the ISO to CD. now i need to put it on the little PC i have. is this going to work? or is the mac download different from the PC download? will the disc be readable from the PC DVD reader?i don't know how to interrupt the windows boot up so that it will boot from the CD. can someone tell me how to do that, step by step key by key?
View 6 Replies View RelatedHaving a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:
0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. As per another online guide, I tried:

I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).
I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.
Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)
My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot. What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?
Dual booting Windows 7 and Fedora 15. What I would like to know is if I can change the boot order to boot Windows 7 first and Fedora 15 as other or second.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a single harddisk partitioned with Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7 installations. I installed Windows first and then Ubuntu, after resizing partitions and adding a new one for Ubuntu. Win7 did not appear in the Grub2 boot menu. I added it (sda3), but on rebooting, I get the message "BOOTMGR is missing/Press Ctrl+Alt_Del to restart".
I understand that Win7 might have put its boot manager in another partition, and sda1 had FAT. I added sda1 as another grub2 entry, but when I try that, I get the error message "Windows Boot Manager/ Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause... Status 0xc0000225/ Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." Attached are fdisk and parted outputs; and the grub2 files I created. How do I get Windows 7 to boot up?
i had windows vista and i installed fedora in the same HD, but now when im at the bootleader screen i got 2 options "fedora" and "other". i can boot fedora normally but i cant boot windows! i know windows still here because i can see my win files in the HD.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Fedora 12 using the installation DVD. When I boot the machine, I get an error message "No boot device available". I get the same error when attempting to boot from CDs and DVDs for various versions of linux, but I can boot Windows XP using a windows install disk in the same DVD drive.
The machine is a Dell 670 workstation, containing one SATA hard disk. I have tried enabling and disabling the SCSI controller, but that has no effect. The machine previously had Windows XP installed, which I deleted using "killdisk". I only want to install Fedora: I am not trying to set this up as a dual boot machine.
I've finished the installation of Debian Squeeze using Installer loader from Windows. But the Installer menu is still appear on Windows Boot Manager.
I've try to uninstall the "Installer Loader" from Windows and I got an error message about BCDEDIT (if I'm not wrong), during uninstallation process.
I ignore it, and continue the uninstallation process until complete. But, After I reboot my computer, the Installer menu is still appear on Windows Boot Manager.
I'm using Windows Vista Business SP2.
[URL]I followed that guide but it still installed GRUB and now whenever I chose the Windows 7 Loader it won't load.... I can load ubuntu just fine but I can't load windows 7.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI updated a PC and a laptop to 10.04 from 9.10 today. Both installs seem to work well, as least from what I can tell so far. However, on the PC with a dual boot via Grub, I can no longer boot to Windows 7. When I select the Windows 7 boot option from Grub the PC just reboots. There was a Grub configuration window that popped up during the 10.04 install. I thought I checked the correct device (/dev/sda1) but it is possible that Grub wanted one of the tiny partitions checked, not sure. I have two SSD in the PC, one with Windows 7, and one with Ubuntu. I believe that Grub boots from the Windows 7 disk.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to create a multiboot USB drive.I have two Ubuntu versions (32-bit and 64-bit Lucid/10.04) running just fine.Where I am stumbling, however, is determining how to get GRUB to boot up the .iso of Windows 7.
The purpose of this drive is to allow me to attempt to do repairs on installs for my friends and family, without having to lug around multiple objects (in lieu of a pen-drive attached to my keychain) -- so simply burning the .ISO onto a CD/DVD is not an option [[The entire point is to do away with physical disks in lieu of a single flash-drive.]]Am I going to simply have to give up and get a second pen-drive for my Windows install?
I upgraded an Acer computer to 10.04. There are still problems with the upgrade as I'm having to do partial upgrades and am getting error messages. 10.04 is very usable but is missing things it thinks it needs....and I don't want any hassles from a computer.
The biggest problem is the computer won't boot to XP anymore.
I had a business need for encryption, so I (foolishly) reinstalled 9.10. I manually deleted all the 9.10 partitions and created a swap, a / and a /home partition of sensible sizes. Then, when asked, I chose "use my password to login and decrypt my home folder" Now ubuntu boots up fine, but although Windows appears in the grub menu, if I select it, the whole machine does a hard reset and grub appears again.
I found some other threads and one suggested using the script boot_info_script*.sh, so I downloaded that and ran it. The RESULTS.txt is below. I've got some programming skills and I can use a terminal, but I'm a GRUB novice. I've reinstalled several times, i've tried sudo update-grub and I'm out of ideas now. I would really like my windows installation back. I have some (Windows) backups, but they would probably kill the MBR now that I've reinstalled ubuntu?
