Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To Win 7 From Xp On Dual Boot Machine?

Aug 14, 2010

I am currently running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 and windows xp in a dual-boot. I am looking to upgrade to windows 7 on the windows side soon but would rather not do a complete rebuild of the whole thing. The two are on separate hard drives so would i just install it on the Windows drive and then follow the instructions at [URL] or is there an easier way?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Broken After Upgrading To 10.04

Apr 12, 2010

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10 and now my Windows XP will not boot from grub. It shows up on the grub boot list but when I select it, all I get is a black screen. It worked perfectly just minutes before the upgrade, but now I cannot use windows, which I need really badly at this point.

General :: Grub Boot Loader Installation In Dual Boot Machine After Windows 7 Installation?

Mar 23, 2010

I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

Debian Installation :: Upgrading Windows On A Computer With Dual Boot

Aug 30, 2014

I recently installed Debian 7 on a dual boot with Windows Vista. Thus, when I boot the computer, I am prompted by a GRUB screen to select Windows Vista loader, Debian, and Debian (recovery mode). I would like to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Will this cause an issue with GRUB? Will a Windows 7 loader be added to the list or will a Windows 7 loader replace the Windows Vista loader? Will there have to be a setting change within Debian? Within Windows?

Fedora Installation :: Reinstalling FC 10 On A Dual Boot Ubuntu - Machine ?

Mar 13, 2009

I'm trying to reinstall FC10 after a foolish mistake I've done that costed me operation of my Fedora partition (uninstalling SELinuxpolicycoreutils).

I have a dual boot Ubuntu - FC 10 machine and delete my old fedora partition with GParted. However when I try to install FC 10 from the live CD using the option "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout" I get the error message:

Could not allocate requested partitions:

Partitioning failed:

The following errors occurred with your partitioning:

You have not defined a root partition (/), which is required for installation of Fedora to continue.

This can happen if there is not enough space on your hard drive(s) for the installation.

Press 'OK' to choose a different partitioning option.

This is the output of fdisk -l :

Partition table entries are not in disk order

My last option is erase everything from my drive including the Ubuntu partition and start over the installation, something that I would like to avoid.

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove From A Dual Boot Windows 7 Machine?

Nov 20, 2010

i have been out of the ubuntu loop for several months due to a motherboard problem. i am going to be getting a new 64 laptop for christmas, with a dual core intel processor and windows 7 home premium as the OS.

i am looking forward to having my own computer again will be installing ubuntu on it. but, before i install ubuntu, i would like to know how to remove ubuntu and return the new computer to its original state if it ever becomes necessary.

i was comforatable using programs such as mbrfix along with gparted to accomplish this task with my old computer, but that was a 32 bit windows xp machine.

will i be able to use these programs with my new laptop? i'm unfamiliar with 64 bit systems, windows 7 etc. and how they may differ from the older computer that i was used to.

Debian Installation :: Recover Grub On A Dual Boot Machine With Encrypted LVM

Oct 16, 2015

My laptop setup is:

sda1: W7
sda2: FAT16
sda3: /boot
sda4: encrypted LVM with debian (everything besides /boot)

now I've re-installed W7 so grub was overwritten. I've tried the procedure which worked for me previously:booting with the netinst usb in rescue mode, choosing a root partition to mount, using grub-install to reinstall the grub:

Code: Select allmount /dev/sda3 /boot
grub-install /dev/sda

Now I'm on Jessie (stable), and this time this fails, and I am able to mount only sda3.grub-install doesn't exit so I'm assuming it has been replaced by `grub-installer'. also '/boot' doesnt exist so I created it manually.

Code: Select allmount /dev/sda3 /boot
grub-installer /dev/sda

The latter fails with
Code: Select all/dev/sda/proc not a directory

Ubuntu :: Upgrading To 10.04 - Boot Without CD - Get Dumped Into A Busybox Shell After Machine Fails To Boot

May 3, 2010

I was upgrading our lab's dhcp server to Lucid and it totally died. I have it running on a Debian recovery cd right now. I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)

I'm anticipating several issues, first Grub, can I get it going again after the Win7 upgrade without messing with my current Ubuntu install? the next issue is Win7 will want to make a "boot" partition, does this create any problem with partition names for Ubuntu? can this be solved by making the windows "primary" partition and using an extended partition inside that? is there anything I'm missing?

How do I add a win7 hard drive to a ubuntu 10.4 machine already running ubuntu, for dual boot? I really don't want to reinstall either one, so how do I fix grub to give Me a choice of OS's to boot up without using f12 key to choose boot order everytime ? , which works ok right now. I've done dual boots before, with both hdd's installed by installing winXp first then ubuntu, works fine in this order(winXp 1st then ubuntu ) because windows rewrites the boot order leaving ubuntu out of the mix. And even on the same hdd with partitions ,but can I add a hdd?. I removed linux hdd first then installed another hdd, installed win7, then replaced linux hdd. Both boot ok,but only by using the F12 key at start up and choosing a hdd to boot first.

General :: Uninstall Mint 9 From Dual Boot Machine?

Jun 28, 2010

Recently, my Mint update informed me it had an upgraded kernel version of Mint 9 and asked did I want to upgrade. Me, not being an old hand at things Linux, upgraded. Instead of overwriting the older version, it put the upgraded version of Mint 9 BESIDE the older one. So now I have, actually, 4 versions of Mint 9 on my PC,(generic plus recovery mode for each) which is dual booted with Vista Home Premium.

I don't want this. I have had weird problems and hiccups since I upgraded. I want to get rid of the newer kernel version and use only the older one. How do I uninstall the upgraded version of Mint 9? I have tried to boot into the older version, but there is no desktop and I have to type on the boot screen and in the terminal. It wants commands I don't know how to give. How do I restore my older version of Mint 9?

I just want one version on my PC in the dual boot with Windows Vista. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? If you give me terminal commands, please make sure they are copy and paste ready. lol.

If uninstalling involves deleting partitions and doing a manual partitioning and formatting, I'll need easy instructions for that also.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 / Win XP SP3 Dual Disk Dual Boot

Jun 5, 2010

I am quite experienced user of Ubuntu desktop / server distributions. Recently my desktop 9.10 disk failed and I decided to reinstall using 10.04. My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.

I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components. My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.

Ubuntu Installation :: Disk Error On /boot With Dual Boot On Dual Disk

Dec 30, 2010

I have a (slightly complicated) dual/multi boot system.

I keep getting boot errors (when choosing ubuntu from the grub2 menu)

Code:
Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot

If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.

My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.

I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).

This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.

Ubuntu Installation :: PC Won't Boot After Upgrading From 9.04 To 9.10

Mar 25, 2010

I wanted to use Ubuntu on one of my old laptops (a great, speedy modern OS on a modest hardware PC). Unfortunately this PC can not at the time read all CD-ROM's (can't figure out why it does read some) and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 - the only CD it did read at the time.

I've used it for two years but I never got my wireless card to work (OK, most of the time it was collecting dust) A couple of days ago I finally realized how to use ndiswrapper (lol...) and I was able to get a working Wi-Fi connection on this laptop. I then proceeded to upgrade it over the internet, to Ubuntu 8.04, then 8.10, then 9.04 and, last night, to 9.10.It has worked through each and every of these updates, but after 9.10 the PC won't even boot (after "GRUB loading...).
