Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading The 6.06LTS UltraSparc Server?

I have a home installation of 6.06 LTS Server on my Sun Ultra2 (Ultrasparc). I love it, everything about it is great. However, I'm starting to watch the clock and realize that I will soon need to upgrade if I want to continue to receive security updates. What is the best way to accomplish this? Can I directly upgrade to the next LTS release? (8.04)? Also, there is no GUI installed, it's a headless system. What is the best mechanism for upgrading via the commandline?
I thought I'd give 10.04 a try since it's an LTS release and I was still using Jaunty. I did the upgrade over SSH using sudo*do-release-upgrade*-d and at first it just upgraded me to Karmic. After the reboot I ran the same command again and it looked like it was upgrading this time to Lucid. Now however after the reboot I no longer could log in (no SSH) and after inspecting the system locally by digging out and old monitor and keyboard, it seams the system hangs during boot.
I went into the Grub menu and found that there is no server kernel listed (apart from the old Jaunty one), only generic-pae and generic. None of these will boot, and if I try the recovery modes the keyboard doesn't function when I get to the recovery menu. Also if I boot the old 2.6.28-17-server, it does boot, but the keyboard also won't function once it boots. I can SSH in once the old kernel has booted, but when I tried to install linux-image-2.6.32-19-server via apt, it can't be found. Furher investigation online sems to indicate that there's only a 64-bit server package and no 32-bit package. What's that all about, is 32-bit no longer supported on the server platfom, and if so is my install now screwed?
Just wondering if this is feasible/sensible. I'm running a server with 8.04 LTS server edition, and I'd like to upgrade to the latest version of sshd because the version included with 8.04 doesn't easily support chroots and I know it's simple to set up in newer versions. There's no official backport, and I don't want to upgrade the whole OS to 10.04 or 9.10, so I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade only the sshd package using a newer repository or something like that?
I've just upgraded my server installation from 9.04 to 9.10. I'm running this as a Xen virtual machine. All seemed to go well until I restarted, at which point I got stuck at this point:

My service provider is running xen-shell 1.0.79 running on Xen version 3.0.3-1, and after the seemingly-successful do-release-upgrade, uname -r reports ubuntu kernal 2.6.18-5-xen-amd64. Unfortunately, this isn't mentioned as a possible problem here [URL]
I know why this happened, but I need to know what problems it's going to cause and how I can re-install / fix the problem. I have my /tmp folder mounted as -noexec ... so when I did a recent update to my 10.04.1 LTS server installation, I got the following errors:
When this happens you have to open a terminal, get the process id for mysql-server-5 then kill that process. Like this: Code: ps -A then from the list of processes that it spits out look at the process id (the number at the beginning of the line) for mysql-server-5.
Now type Code: sudo kill -9 XXXXX where XXXXX is the process id for mysql-server, and enter your password. The upgrade process should now resume.
i am trying to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04 from 8.04, and am getting this warning:"Upgrading may reduce desktop effects, and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs.This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. My Windows Vista installation won't start after upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. If I select it on GRUB2, it leaves a blinking cursor on screen. And I tried doing the whole test disk thing and the boot info script. This is what my Results.txt file says
I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.
I was running Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS and using flashpolicytwistd from Google Code to support flash-based telnet on two websites. After upgrading to 10.04 flashpolicytwistd no longer starts.

I also cannot locate the process with ps -e, nor can I confirm that it is listening on its assigned port (default is 843, I changed it to 4005).
No errors show up in the logs. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no change.

I own a server from 2006, I don't want to change OS on my server. How much difficult can be upgrading to the last version of openSuSE? I don't have physical access to the server, since it's a virtual server, so I think I would have to upgrade with NFS. I don't even have a GUI (well, I actually use YaST to configure everything via shell, so it's a sort of gui) and, the most important thing, I run PLESK on my server. I need to have Plesk for the administration of my customers and domains but in this upgrade I can't lose any data, from the database (MYSql) to the ones in the web folders. In other words, I need to upgrade from SuSE Linux 10.0 to OpenSUSE 11.2 without lossing any data. I am upgrading because I need the latest version of PHP, Apache and MYSql, and for security reasons too.
procedure or instructions on how to reinstall the X server or upgrade it to the latest? Every time I played around with X I screwed up things good... I think it got corrupted and I have display problems that I cant fix, so far everything points to a software problem, probably X server...If you need more background info:
I had a 5.3 CentOS server running beautifully. I upgraded to 5.4 for the improved power managment on my hardware, as well as improved network drivers. Unfotunately upgrading from 5.3 to 5.4 completely breaks vmware server 2.0.2.[URL]..
Unfotunately the downgrade of glibc is still resulting in unstable performance. Is it possible for me to downgrade to cent os 5.3 without re-installing the operating system? I'm really stuck here,
Ran 'do-release-upgrade -d'on my server running Hardy.No problems during the upgrade.Rebooted after the upgrade completed, and I was presented with the new plymouth screen. This sucks for servers.It sat there displaying the logo for ~5 minutes.Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 through F8 and didn't see anything on the virtual consoles.Finally figured out that I had to hit ESC on the plymouth screen to actually see what was going on.It said /dev/sdi1 had problems along with /dev/md0.It sat there forever with no fsck status and no HDD lights blinking.
SysRq+REISUB and tweaked the boot parameter to remove 'quiet splash' and appended 'S' for single-user mode.Got the attached screenshot.The box has been sitting like this for ~15 minutes.Not entirely sure what to report a bug against at the moment. I have a client who was using samba 3.0.21a, and there was a single printer being served, well as as quite a few shares. I recently upgraded to samba 3.3.4, and they have reported back that the printer is no longer working. Everything else is OK.
Does anybody know off the top of their head what has changed that would cause it to stop working?

While backing up/restoring bacula clients. We were getting an error regarding database tables' version. The error message is given below.. "Found 10 needs 12".
After Googling, what we found is, we have to update the postgres database for bacula. So now we are in process to update the database via the update_bacula-tables script. We are not sure, if it will solve the problem or not. We have just upgraded bacula 2.4.4 to 5.0.1. Postgres version is upgraded from 8.3 to 8.4. It is Debian 6.0 squeeze.
Due to all the "fun" I had upgrading spamassassin from 3.2.5 to 3.3.1 on C55 I thought I would detail it here so as to possibly save others from all the frustration I have endured. There are probably a zillion different ways to make this work but this is how I did it and it seems to work well.
1) Acquire spamassassin rpm. I downloaded several different versions from various sites and had problems with all of them so I ended up grabbing the SRPM from Fedora 13 spamassassin-3.3.1-2.fc13.src.rpm. This of course will not load onto C55 as rpmbuild has changed so I loaded it onto a FC13 box and then TARed the SPEC & SOURCES directories, copied them onto a C55 and built SRPM from there.
2) Install on C55 The new spamassassin requires several updated packages to make it happy. a) perl-Mail-DKIM greater than 0.31. I cheated and used this one from FC8 perl-Mail-DKIM-0.32-3.fc8.noarch.rpm b) perl-socket6 that is 2.0 or later. I got this one from DAG perl-Socket6-0.20-1.rf.x86_64.rpm c) perl-NetAddr-IP that is 4.0 or later. Again DAG saved the day perl-NetAddr-IP-4.007-1.rf.x86_64.rpm d) the spamassassin of course :) Actually I built them from the SRPMs as I needed both the 32 and 64 bit packages for various servers.
3) Run sa-update --D to get the latest rules then restart the spamassassin service. For those who do not have access to a FC13 box you can get a copy of the SRPM I made here [URL].
I installed PHP 5.3 from remi repository and now some PHP pages end up as blank pages. Joomla pages load with no problem but iDevAffiliate pages end up as blank pages. Could it be something in the php.ini file? I have no idea where to look. Any ideas?
I've had the 10.04 installed on a notebook for about a week now and I want to upgrade to the LTS that was released today. When I go to check updates it shows me that everything is already updated. How can this be? Is there another way to upgrade from RC to LTS that I don't know about?
Installed 7.04 on a toshiba satellite M115 Laptop. I want to upgrade to 10.04. Made a boot disk and tried to launch but 7.04 always opens. How can I get this upgrade done?
I am upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 1. This is on my gaming machine so I can test it and if it screws my system up, I can reinstall. I have not seen any issues so far. I think there might be a thread already open for talking about 10.10 but I am creating this thread anyways.
The upgrade is going faster than when i first did the upgrade earlier this month.I am testing Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer with a 1.6Ghz AMD 64 processor.It has 3 GB ram and a 500GB hard drive. 128 MB video ram.
Note: This is The emachines EL 1200-06w I am using a Belkin wireless card which is only able to be used with the help of Windows Wireless Drivers (ndiswrapper).
I plan to report bugs in launchpad. Last time, Ubuntu could not start after an update. Now, I am risking down time by using the Alpha version again. I am installing by going to: Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal In Terminal, I enter in
Code: sudo update-manager -d and then it asks for a password to open update manager. Then it shows the upgrade is available. I am still at the process of upgrading the computer. I am running Ubunut 10.04 32 bit at the moment.
UPDATE: I didn't need ndiswrapper, and I am able to now use Natty, where it works as it should.
Recently I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.04 from a CD which I had sent to me, but which I never actually used. So I put the CD in my laptop, used Wubi to install Lucid Lynx next to Windows in dual-boot, and restarted the laptop. Everything was OK. I noticed that the Update Manager didn't come up yet. I glanced at the notification area, and I wasn't connected to the Internet. So I entered wireless connection password and so Internet was back.I then opened Update Manager, changed release options to "Normal Releases" and was told of upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. So I pressed the button, successfully updated and restarted. BUT, when Ubuntu tried to reboot, it gave a whole list of errors, and proceeded to shut down. Right now I'm manually downloading 10.10 64-bit, and Wubi. And I uninstalled previous installation. If this works, then great. But I still want to know, just out of interest, why the hell did it do that? Is there issues with the upgrade? Was there errors in my Ubuntu installation?
I have perfectly working Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. But, yesterday I upgraded it to Ubuntu 10.10. There were various error messages during upgrade process, but it showed that I can continue without certain package. But, after restarting the laptop, I didn't found the new kernel entry in the GRUB. So, I continued with booting using older kernel version. It showed that ubuntu is booting but after sometime screen went totally blank. I even tried to boot into recovery mode, but faced same problem.
Then I booted with live CD, and chroot to the root folder of ubuntu on my HDD. After running command "dpkg --configure -a" I got error messages which are stored in attached file error-msg.txt.I cannot format the linux partition for a clean install. Please suggest solution for either recovery of 10.10 or restoration of 10.04.
