Ubuntu Installation :: Settings Lost After Re-installation?
Jun 27, 2010
Right now I'm running ubuntu with three partitions. /, /home and a swap partition. If I did a clean re-installation what exactly would be lost afterwards? /home obviously not but what about all the system settings, visual individualization or downloaded software from the ubuntu software center for example. Furthermore, I'd like to know why a clean re-installation is regarded better than an upgrade.

This is awesome. I configured my Konsole and other KDE settings, and the very next login everything is reverted.

I recently bougt an Asus N61DA with Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, so I made the Ubuntu CD, just like it said. Then I inserted the CD and restarted the computer. I started the installer (ubuntu 10.10 64-bit) and chose the option where it says "install ubuntu alongside other operating systems", or something like that. So, the installation started, but then I lost the internet connection, and the installation stopped.I re-connected the computer, but the installation still wouldn't continue. I restarted the computer and then nothing happened. I've restarted it several times, but still nothing happens. I've inserted the Windows recovery CD, but it doesn't work

I installed Kubuntu on my Toshiba A135 with no problems at all...everything works: sound, wifi, LAN, etc...BUT whenever I reboot/restart the computer my Display and Audio settings revert back to default, and it doesn't happen when I log out, just when I restart/shutdown the computer. I have an Intel 945GM chipset and I have set my external Acer 23" monitor as the default and only monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080@60Hz using KDE's System Settings...And I chose to disable the laptop's internal monitor...but whenever I restart, the display returns to a 1024x800 cloned resolution (the default one)...which by the way looks hideous on a 23" monitor. And also the sound mixer goes back to the default levels.
So, can anyone help me out? I've been using Ubuntu for over 3 years and I've never had any problems like this one. I have just fell in love with Kubuntu, it looks and runs great, but this problem/bug is keeping me from being comfortable with it... I've been reading some things about XRandr and some commands and stuff and nothing have worked until now. I wonder, is it a common bug in Kubuntu or maybe an erroneous setting in the session manager....?

I've installed recently on my Eee PC 901 Xubuntu 10.04 and it works very well, but every time when I logout and then log in again, the desktop drops to the default icons and GTK themes. Then I've figured it out: on logout and then login the XFCE's settings daemon xfsettingsd is not loading.

My first post. I lost all connections to the internet on my Linux Box Yesterday. I have checked my broadband connection and router. OK because I am using them to sent this from my laptop. I have 2 ethernet cards - no indication of a problem with either so I suspect for reasons unknown I have lost all my network settings. The Desktop User Guide says go to the Network Settings Window. I used to have a widget on the Menu Bar which enabled me to check the settings but for some reason it vanished a month or so ago and I can't find how to get it back.
PS In the meantime I am stuck with this crummy Microsoft box the interferes with everything I try to do.

my computer recently ran out of disk space, and for whatever reason (presumably bad coding!) that caused Evolution to freak out and deny all knowledge of my email account.Fortunately, all the email is still in present in ~/.evolution/mail/imap/me@foo.com but I have no idea how to make Evolution realise that and let me load it again.

I'm using ubuntu classic on 11.04 (that's not the foolish part). I was tidying up my main menu with the Edit Menu application, and deleted all of the hidden items in the Applications submenu 'Other', including things like Compiz, Metacity, Open Folder, Window Manager.I had believed that this would have no effect on the operation of anything; only upon what was listed in the menu, but the effects seem to have been quite severe and wide-ranging.Now, at reboot, there is no background image, cursor, or windows decorator (I have to get a terminal window open and run compiz --replace), and I cannot open locations from the places Menu (I get an error telling me that no application is registered as handling this file). There are probably other consequences I have yet to discover.
The desktop.configuration files for the 'Other' menu items are still present in Usr/Share/Applications directory. Is there a way that I can restore things to the way they worked before I deleted these Menu items? It would be an enormous help in my predicament.

I have installed Lucid in a new laptop. Things are running OK except for the following problem:
I connect to the network/Internet using Wired ethernet (TCP/IP) with static IP. Everytime I reboot/restart my network configurations are lost and I have to re-configure. I have googled this problem and have seen a few posts/bugs in launchpad etc. for what appears to be the same issue...but unfortunately I am not getting a clear solution to this problem.
Just for clarity, I am using the following commands to re-configure my network everytime:
Also note that I have already tried editing the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. But it seems that these are not being picked or are being overridden.

I turned down my txpower with the command: sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower 3 Which works to fine turn down my broadcast power from the default value of 15 dBm to 3 dBm. But it is reset every time I restart Ubuntu 11.04 to the default value of 15 dBm. How do I save my modified txpower settings so they don't reset after a restart? It is really annoying having to re-enter the command every time I reboot my computer!

I'm running PCLinuxOS 2010.07 (KDE) on my Acer laptop with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. I have an external Acer monitor that displays at 1920*1080. I have selected my laptops internal screen to be disabled and use the external screen. The PC LinuxOS Control Centre selected the 'Intel later than 810 driver'. All works well whilst I'm using my system but when I turn off and reboot the settings are lost and I have a 1280*800 display on my laptop and the same on my external screen. Resetting the Display using Configure your Desktop allows me to reset the external monitors to my preferences but how can I make theses settings permanent?

The 'Multiple Screens' tool, aka grandr, is very handy for setting up my dual monitors. But restarting my system restores the monitor setup to the (crummy) default settings. Is there a way to save these settings and make sure they are always applied when the OS boots? Putting these settings in my xorg.conf would be fine, but I'm not sure where or in what form the settings generated by grandr might be located, or if they're at all xorg.conf compatible.

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and everything went smoothly EXCEPT that g++-4.1 and all its dependencies were uninstalled, and now it's nowhere to be found in Synaptic Package Manager. How can I get g++-4.1 back??
ps. I know that I can download source and build it manually, but there has to be a more "Ubuntu-ish" way of doing it.

I recently thought it would be a good idea to install ubuntu on my home computer thats running XP home edition. Initially When running the live CD it asked me what partition I wanted it to go on. So I chose to share the one with windows on it assuming it would create a dual boot automatically. After Install of Ubuntu I restarted and It booted straight into ubuntu without the option of XP. After looking around on Ubuntu for some signs of Windows files I panicked and decided to put the XP disc in to see if I could fix the boot for windows. Big mistake! After some research on some forums to appeared to suggest running fixboot and fixmbr so I did with no joy.
After this nothing worked and when I put the live CD in again It just went into the virtual environment. So then I was left with no OS at all it seems. Panicking even more I tried to repair the original XP install but windows couldn't see the partition which seemed strange since the repair console finds the windows install. The windows install is on the C drive which is a partition on a single no raid SATA drive. (Hope that makes sense). After scratching my head and googling like crazy I found a few tutorials on Grub that suggested that you could insert the root of the XP install and it would boot fine. As I am not familiar with Ubuntu this went a bit over my head. At this point I thought I didn't have much to lose and Installed Ubuntu again on a new partition on another drive to have a go but I couldn't find where to find the root and even if I could I would know where to put it.When I went into disc into disk utility it didn't even show the SATA volume anyway. It shows the adapter but no volume Im so confused and I feel like Im fumbling in the dark hoping to bump into the answer.

Recently I updated my Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.10, by performing a clean install and not-formatting my home partition (set it as home mount point for the 8.10).At first I didn't realize any changes in the desktop environment, my compiz setting still doing fine (except for the background set for each desktop). And then I wanted to set the image, but to found out that there is no more shortcut to my compiz setting (through the System > Preferences menu).I checked the Appearance menu, and since I clicked on one of the options available, my compiz feature is no more to be available. The desktop is set to default 8.10 feature.I checked my other pre-installed application; such as Amarok, Thunderbird, etc. They all are gone.My question is, how can I get them back? This question is important, because from now on I'm going to perform the sequential upgrade (8.10 > 9.04 > 9.10), if I'm going to loose those application on every upgrade phase, then I'd just upgrade first before solving my problem.

I recently upgraded to koala, but gimp no longer functioned after upgrade; i.e. open file popup dialogue freezes, crop tool is non-functional, preferences dialogue was absolutely a blank box. Tried un-install/re-install thru both the new software center and synaptic. Same broken result every time. Tried a direct download from gimp.org but ran into a lot of dependency stuff I know nothing about; I'm an end user, not a coder. So, how do I get a functioning install of gimp?

I upgraded my desktop computer from 8.04 to 9.10 last night.
The second HD, which contains all of my music, used to mount as:
/media/disk/AllMusic
Now it mounts as:
/media/d7c7179f-d775-49ff-889e-661d6d188452/AllMusic
So the music player applications can't find the music, and neither can the other computers on my home network.
Ubuntu won't let me rename it.
How can I fix this and restore this shared drive?

I keep finding the same fixes on the web and they are not working. What I have/what I did: I have a dual boot PC. HD0 was XP. HD1 Kubuntu 10.04. I upgraded XP to Win 7. This jacked my Grub up, now all I can load is Win 7. I don't see the Grub menu anymore. I've been trying to reinstall Grub using varoius web pages like: [URL]
They seem to all be telling me the same thing but not working. I boot into a liveCD. I have to sudo apt-get install grub then I can do sudo grub. I follow the instructions:
sudo grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition".
Now if I'm understanding this right the reason for that is. HD0,0 is my first HD first partition (which is Win 7), and grub doesn't like windows. I tried swapping it out so it reads:
sudo grub
> root (hd1,0)
> setup (hd1)
I then quit and reboot. Win 7 loads. I don't see Grub.I am using 2 separate hard drives?

I recently upgraded to 10.04 Lucid a while ago. I don't know if anyone else needs this feature but I use it a lot.
MOUSE-OVER RHYTHMBOX PLAYER ICON FUNCTIONALITIES
In previous releases, one of my favorites about RhythmBox was the fact that if you need to control things such as volume or check presently playing track, you can do so just by a mouse-over action and a scroll mouse over the Top-panel tray icon. It's all gone. Need to say the new click-on is good too but it's without the mouse scroll or Mouse-Over INFO
How can I re-enable it please? Why should I click on RhythmBox player each time just to control volume
BUILT-IN MIC CEASED WORKING
