I learn from a BSD magazine and installed PCBSD on my Dell notebok a single harddisk with a hope to have a triple boot. I have all the three OS, but could not find the menu.lst from /boot/grub/.... All I can find is a grub.cfg which is not editable. Someone from this forum said that menu.lst = grub.cfg.

How to resize the partition with linux and installing PC-BSD 8.1 on my Mac?
First I installed OS X and updated it to 10.6.6
Then I created a BOOTCAMP-Partition using the bootcamp-utility
Then I installed rEFIt
Then I installed UBUNTU (and the dual-boot works very well)
Now I want to add a PC-BSD
May I change the partition-size of the UBUNTU-partition without destroying MBR oder rEFIt? If yes, will rEFIt recognize the newly installed PC-BSD?

I was able to install Windows 7 64 bit and ubuntu 9.10 along with Mac OS X (10.6) to my MacBook Pro 3,1 (Santa Rosa). Some minor issues remain to be addressed, but all three OSs are functional. My question relates to the rEFIt menu where I only see Mac OS X and Windows as available options, unless I happen to have the ubuntu Live CD inserted or my external drive attached which result in Penguin and/or additional Mac icon, respectively. I get to ubuntu or Windows through the Windows icon in rEFIt, then select one or the other from a long menu in grub, with ubuntu set as the default. BTW: The included OS X option doesn't work from here, of course, and I'd like to remove it at some point since I can't use it, but that's even less important at the moment.
I get "Error 15: File not found" when I try "find /boot/grub/stage1" or "find /grub/stage1" from within the grub utility, as suggested by a previous poster as a start to discovering and relocating the grub loader in order to change the boot behavior. Manually I can navigate to /boot/grub, but I am not at all sure if this is the same thing. With everything essentially working, I don't want to trash what I have. But it would be convenient if I could select Mac OS X, Windows, or ubuntu directly from the rEFIt menu. I am not frightened by command line work but have somewhat limited experience and will welcome any constructive input. I saw posts on this topic dating back to 2008 or early 2009, but current topics didn't seem to match up. I'm also new to posting here and ask for you patience if I am not approaching the forum in the correct way or location.
I have (only bc i have to) windows vista, also Ubuntu 10.04 on the same drive, and dual-booting is no issue at all. But after I installed Mandriva 2010 to try to triple boot, i couldn't find Ubuntu anymore so I got rid of mandriva, and grub was messed up bc I deleted all mandriva partitions. So then I installed Xubuntu 9.10 (because it is a quick install) to recover grub, and with Xubuntu, Ubuntu, and vista, Grub sees all three OSes no problem. So what would I have to do to make Grub work this way when I install Mandriva?

I'd like to be able to selectively boot into all 3 until I can return my current 8.10 install. Can someone show me how to get my /boot/grub/menu.lst file in order?
I currently dual-boot XP and Debian sid. I currently have XP on /dev/sda1, sid on /dev/sda2 with /home mounted separately on /dev/sa3, swap is /dev/sda4. I have free space in both sa3 and 4, mostly in 4, of course. What I'd like to do is add a third partition, either with or without a separate home mount, but have my current grub2 still be the bootloader. I'm thinking I'll give a total of 33 G to it (I keep almost nothing on my hard drive, it's all on the cloud). I want to install Kubuntu and try it out, I've burnt the Live CD and it's very cool.

1) I had only windows on my drive.
2) Using 10.04 on USB, I made a 10gb ext3 partition and a 1gb swap area and installed 10.04. No problems at all using grub2, and the GUI is nice for dummies like me.
3) I got antsy so I made an 8gb partition and installed 8.04 on it. It automatically installed grub (the old grub).
Now when I boot my machine the Old Grub loads, not Grub2. I can select 8.04, 10.04, or XP no problem. When I select 10.04 and use the GUI I can see 10.04, 8.04, and XP, but things are in a different order (clearly the grub2 order).
Questions:
1) How can I get grub2 to take over booting? (I like the GUI)
2) I'd like to install puppy linux too, but I'm afraid of really screwing things up. Can someone recommend a safe way of installing it (besides just running from a USB- I've had mixed luck using USB OS's over long timeframes).

I use Linux Mint, and I installed a linux-rt from the repository, but when I restart my computer no grub menu shows up. It just boots linux mint. How can I get it to show the menu so I can choose the real time kernel?

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. I'm currently on a work trip with my Asus G72GX laptop for non-work use (I'm posting from my work laptop). Yesterday, I accidentally booted into my laptop's recovery partition (from the Grub2 bootloader). Before I realized that that's what was happening, it booted into some kind of recovery program which ended up in an error. I restarted the laptop and couldn't get into the bootloader anymore. Now, the only thing that comes up is an error -- "error: unknown filesystem." Below that, it gives me the "grub rescue>" prompt. Most of the commands that sites list for grub rescue only return "Unknown command". ls works and lists all of my partitions: (hd0), (hd0,msdos, (hd0,msdos7), etc. down to msdos1. When I "ls (hd0,msdos" (etc, etc) it says "error: unknown filesystem."
I then started looking into booting from a Live Ubuntu USB drive. I've tried 11.04 and 10.04 now and they both do the same thing. I put them on an 8GB flash drive (only 1 at any given time) using Universal USB Installer and was able to get to the Ubuntu menu (Run Ubuntu from this USB, Install Ubuntu on a Hard Disk, etc.) If I try either "Run Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu", the screen flickers and comes right back to that menu.BTW, my 3 operating systems are: Windows 7 HP 64-bit, Mythbuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Windows XP 32-bit. Laptop hardware: Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 6GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTX video card.

I've installed 11.04 on my laptop (dual boot with Win7). It goes through the grub boot menu and boots in ubuntu but displays ~inch wide band near the top, nothing else. I assume it is a display issue (it has an ATI mobile Radeon HD 3870 X2 card) but can't seem to resolve problem. I can boot into Windows via the menu. In the grub menu I can boot into the command line (grub>) but can't seem to make progress beyond that. Within this grub interface, it won't take terminal commands.

The installation process completed, popped the disc back out, but when booting up I get no boot menu and just load Windows 7. I don't get any error messages or any sort of feedback. If i go into BIOS, I only have Windows 7 as a bootable option. I presumed grub or an equivalent would be installed as part of the installation.

I had to reinstall all Oses, winsxp 2nd after installing Ubuntu this time Grub2 detected and has each os running. I've so far looked at the Debian grubmenu.lst which shows that winsxp is listed but not Ubuntu even though I can boot Ubuntu. I'm sure that grub2 is in control because at boot it shows grub 1.98 also the os selection looks like the 1 in grub2
I examined my partitions using gparted it shows that winsxp is labeled as boot lba. That was sda3.
1. There's grub legacy in debian, ? in winsxp, grub2 in Ubuntu. where did grub2 go? It's menu is not in debian.
2. How do I find it or should I just change the grub that is within Debian to Grub2 & make it the system default and it's at the beginning of the system.
At the time of Ubuntu installation I didn't have access to Debian, due to wins install. So wins partition had boot flag.
3. Is there a way to enable grub legacy and add Ubuntu entries to it?
4. Is it as easy as changing the boot flags to Grub in Debian partition at beginning of hda?
5. Why can't I see default grub file on this installation of Ubuntu?
On this 1 as well as the other I have root login and can't see it.
It would be nice to get a sticky thread up for dual boot installation issues. It seems like this is a very common problem with the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04.

I had to reinstall Grub2 and run update-grub.
Then I had to run Rescue on my XP disk. Once to the DOS command line I ran the following command:
C:Windows>fixboot c:
I rebooted and now all is well. I can boot to Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows XP from my Grub menu.
I used to be a pro at editing Grub's menu.lst file so I could have my menu look clean, simple, and easy to read. Now that I have set up 10.04 (Working beautifully now after a couple setbacks) the menu.lst file is no longer where it used to be (/boot/grub/menu.lst)
How do I edit my boot menu now?
I have Windows XP SP3 running on my Desktop PC and wish to dual boot it with Ubuntu 10.10. This isn't the issue as I can do this and it gives me the GRUB menu but selecting Windows XP won't do anything - or so it seems How long should it take to boot into Windows from the GRUB menu?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got an old Dell Precision 670 which has a SCSI disk. I installed 10.04 and everything worked fine - I could boot into 10.04 from the GRUB menu. I later added an IDE disk and installed WinXP Pro on it.
When I ran 'sudo update-grub', Lucid discovered the IDE disk and added a WinXP Pro entry to the GRUB menu. Now, though I can still boot 10.04 from the GRUB menu, I can't boot WinXP - the screen goes blank, and I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI seem to have determined a few other things about my "only gets as far as a GRUB command line" problem:To recap, sda3 (GRUB hd0,2) is the main Linux partition; sda9 (GRUB hd0,8) is the boot partition.GRUB is 0.92.Installation was from an 8.04LTS live CD (at least, that's what the envelope says it is)/"/boot/grub" (i.e., "/grub" on sd9/hd0,8) contains a "menu.lst" file. I modified it (had to do a "sudo gedit" from a command line!) to (1) comment out the line that hides the boot menu, (2) change the timeout from 3 seconds to 90, and (3) add a menu line based on my succesful manual IPL of DOS.
It still boots to a GRUB command line. If I do a "configfile /grub/menu.lst," a boot menu comes up. DOS will successfully IPL, but Linux still gets a "no setup signature found," (ditto for "recovery mode"), which suggests either a bad kernel, or a kernel that's too big for the GRUB to handle.Why would it be finding its way to grub, but not finding the boot menu file?Why would the live CD come up just fine, yet the GRUB and kernel it installs fail?
i have ubuntu 10.04 and xp installed in two different hard disc partitions. everything was fine until i came from vacation and found that after turning on my pc it gets hang as soon as the grub menu with duel boot option appears. i cant do anything at that stage, just nothing.keyboard doesn't work also. here one thing to be mentioned that for last few days my pc used to hang frequently in ubuntu 10.04 and then i had no option left but to restart my pc.

I installed F14 from my usb according to the wiki page using unetbootin. The usb boots perfectly and i get a working F14 system. I partitioned my HD with gparted and got a /,/home and swap partition, then used the installer to install the system using them. The installer finishes without a problem and ask me to reboot. When I reboot , there is a blank black screen. No grub menu , no fedora loading. I reboot with the usb and the partitions are full with the files from F14 , there is no xorg.log in the /var/log/ so f14 doesn't even start so the problem seems to be with grub.
I check the grub.conf in /boot/ , i set the timeout to 5 secs , i check that the kernel is using nomodeset (according to this wiki page there is a problem with ati), xorg.conf is using vesa as a driver and I reinstall grub with grub-install with no problems.My notebook is a acer aspire 5552 , i don't think is a hardware problem because I've used arch and opensuse with no problems in it. Fedora seems a nice distro , but this error is preventing me from using it.
i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm a very new Linux user, so speak slowly and don't use big words. I installed Karmic from the Live CD. It is the only OS in use on this system. I then upgraded to Ubuntu Studio using the instructions found on the wiki.
On bootup, I get a brief message stating "GRUB loading" and then the system automatically boots to the generic kernel. No GRUB menu is ever displayed. I would like the option to boot to the real-time kernel, but I have no idea how to edit the appropriate files. I've done a fair amount of reading on the subject, but I find very little information relating directly to the real-time kernel, and so I still feel like I'm too green to do it without messing something up.
