Ubuntu Installation :: NTFS Partition Becomes Unallocated?

I have a laptop with 500GB of hardisk. Here is the picture of my partition: sda1 and sda2 was one partition before, then I resize it to make some room for Windows XP installation. sda6 was sda5 before I shrink sda1. and the unallocated space was sda6 before. I really need some help. How to repair the unallocated partition so I can use it without losing any file in it? I have so much important file in the unallocated partition.

[URL] I used testdisk as the replies suggested recovered all my linux partition including my 2 linux distros and boot partitions, but now my windows 7 appeared as unallocated space, which is very ironic, I fixed my last problem only to have situation reversed. I recovered the mbr record from my boot partition, but because that record dose not include the ntfs partition, that partition appears as unallocated space. so how can I make that ntfs partition recognized again so I can update grub and boot to my windows 7 partition? Please help me out, I have had this partition stuck in my computer for a while doing nothing...

using onboard windows disk management i have made 75gb unallocated to add to the aforementioned ntfs data partition. but, after resizing extended partition, will i need to fix grub even though i will be adding the unallocated space to a storage partition and not the ubuntu boot partition?

I had to reinstall my Ubuntu 10.04 system after some trouble trying to remove a FAT32 partition. I reinstalled using the Live Ubuntu CD (not Ubuntu Studio CD) and seems to work fine. I want to know if its normal to have an unallocated space before the boot partition? I installed GRUB2 in the sdb1, not in main sdb. Ubuntu boots fine, but I was wondering if the unallocated space affects it being detected properly by other systems? When I boot OS X I get an error that the HD is not formatted. Previously I was not getting the error. OS X & Ubuntu are each on a separate SATA HD and Windows XP is on a third IDE HD.

So, I have a 1.5 TB WD My Book that has been working fine since I got it. It has a 250GB WFBS partition and the remaining is NTFS. Worked in Windows, Ubuntu and Mac OS X as well as on my Wii.Now, none of my systems recognize it. Tried on two computers under Ubuntu and Windows. Tried on a third with Mac OS X. On one of the first two, tried Mac OS X via VirtualBox. My Wii will not recognize the WBFS either. Gparted will not recognize it (whether from a Live CD or full install). Disk Utility in the Mac sees it, but as a 2TB unallocated drive. The same for Disk Management in Windows 7. I need some of the stuff on there, plus I want my 1.5TB back forall other purposes. That was Ubuntu 10.10, OS X 10.6.6, Windows 7 and Wii 4.3U. [edit]So, marked as "Solved" but that is not exactly true. Ultimately, the drive was found to be a bust and I have Western Digital sending me a new one

I was attempting to format a flash drive, and well, used the wrong sdX device. I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.
Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW
Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.
info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.
At the end of installion,lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.
Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.
But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.
After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr,lenny boot from lenny's grub.
The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.

I have been duel booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04, and wanted to do a fresh install of both. I decided that the easiest thing to do would be to take care of the Windows install first because installing it after always causes problems. I copied all my personal/work/school files onto the Ubuntu partition then proceeded with the installation. Redoing the Windows partitions went as planned however, Windows decided to relabel my Ubuntu partition as "unallocated" instead of ext4. This is bad. I am sure that I did not delete the ubuntu partition, so I'm fairly certain all my files are intact, just not accessible due to the mislabeling. Is there a way to reinstate the partition to ext4 without reformatting it?
I cannot mount my linux partitions and I can't reformat them without losing their content.

I have 2 partitions:
- Partition 1 = xp and ubuntu
- Partition 2 = private matters (movies, pictures, etc.)
I successfully obtained 5 gb of unallocated space from xp I would like to add to my partition 2.
but inside gparted I can't partition 2 to increase, even though I have not mounted XP partition or 2 - I can only make 2 partition smaller and not bigger.
Is it because my swap partition is in the way or? I can not figure it out

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

i would like to extend my main file system into the unallocated space that i have on my hard drive, the unallocated space is most of it, as it used to be a partition but was deleted, do i have to do this with a boot up disk because i think that it can only be done on an unmounted partition, or is there a way to do this while linux is running in the main partition.

I need a little help regaining some unallocated space on my Hard Drive. I have a 52 Gib unallocated partition and I want to add it to /dev/sda4 which only has 19.73 Gib. (See attachment of my partition table). I ended up with this free space because I deleted a partition that contained another OS I no longer use. I don't know if I can use a move/resize or copy paste. I think the copy paste only copies the stored data not the space. What I want to do is take the unallocated space and add it to the sda4 partition.

My PC has two OS's - Windows XP and Ubuntu - in a separate partition. There is some unallocated disk space between Windows and Ubuntu. I tried unsuccessfully to merge them together as one larger partition using Gparted in Ubuntu or another software in Windows. I thank you in advance for anyone who advises me hot to do it.

Is there any way to use unallocated space to extend a partition that isn't close to that partition? there is an image attached, I can extend /dev/sda2 but not /dev/sda1 ( the one that i want to) I used the live cd to run gparted.I had to move /dev/sda2 to to the right and then extend /dev/sda1

I tried to repartition my hard (320GB) drive yesterday because I need (40 GB) more space in windows, below I mention the previous file system and later file system architecture. It is dual boot (windows 7 and Fedora 13). I am sorry that I did not take screenshot!
1. boot partition, 100 MB
2. windows-7, around 75 GB
3. extended, around 230 GB
inside extended 3 logical partitions:
3a. 125 GB for backupv(NTFS)
3b. 4 GB for linux swap
3c. 100 GB for linux
I used gparted. Since I had to create more space in between windows and logical partition for increasing windows, (I could not shrink Linux as it comes to the end) so I removed Linux (I reinstalled later) first, moved (hold in the middle and drag) backup partition to the right by 40 GB, created a primary partition out of the left portion of logical partition and merged with windows. Finally installed Fedora on the right most portion (60 GB now) in the logical partition. Now my file system looks like following;
1. boot partition, 100 MB
2. Windows-7, around 115 GB
3. extended, 190 GB

Now my problem is, I don't like that 7.84 MB unallocated space in the logical partition. I was told that it (smaller than the smallest chunk gparted can allocate to any partition) will always be there unless we allow some program to do the partitioning automatically rather than I manipulate/move it manually? It is true? If so is there (m)any software which can do this? Or simply how to get rid of this unallocated space.

Recently I decided to give Ubuntu 10.04 a try and I didn't like it + some drivers were really buggy so I deleted the partition. I can't boot. I covered the process of how I fixed it on my blog here. Anyhow, now I'd like to expand my windows partition as there's 175gb of unallocated space. The problem is gparted won't let me expand it (trying this via liveCD). I've tried mounting/unmounting it's no luck.

I'd be very grateful if some charitable person could help with a problem. I have a portion of unallocated space, 15GB, which is situated to the left of all my other partitions (according to GParted). Unfortunately I already have 4 primary partitions. Although I am willing to delete my last partition, I still amn't sure how I could go about reclaiming the 2 portions of unallocated space under one new partition

I am trying to partition my unallocated part of the disc in my laptop in ubuntu 10.04 using Gparted.Here is a screenshot of my disk and its partitions:
when i select the unallocated space i can ONLY create a PRIMARY partition..the LOGICAL and EXTENDED ones are grayed out.. i want to partition this unallocated space in two or three parts, and it seems i only have one (out of the four) primary partitions left.. so i cannot create the partitions i want!

I clean installed Ubuntu 10.10 by shrinking my Windows 7 partition slightly. Now that I want to expand my Linux partition, I shrunk my Win 7 partition from Windows OS. From Ubuntu, the partition manager shows /dev/sda1 contains the Win 7 and unallocated partition. /dev/sda2 contains the Linux and swap partitions. I can't seem to expand my Linux partition (ext4) in sda2 with the unallocated space in sda1. I also can't shift the unallocated space in sda1 to sda2. Any idea how to expand my main Linux partition with the unallocated space?

I am having an issue adding unallocated space to my root partition. Based on other threads I figured out that the unallocated space needs to be right next to the partition that one wants to extend. In my case, I would like to extend 'ext3' in attached screenshot of gparted. I carved out a 1002MB space and moved this unallocated space right under the ext3 partition (/dev/sda3). How do I add this unallocated space to /dev/sda3 please? When I run 'gparted' on bootup (using linux running on a usb stick), I don't get the option to increase the size of /dev/sda3. Basically the unallocated space is not being 'seen' when I try to resize /dev/sda3.

Now i have decided to switch fully to Ubuntu, so I have formatted the windows partition. Now however i am not sure how to allocated the unallocated space and expand the Ubuntu partition. I originally had an Ubuntu partition on my hard drive which occupied about half of it. I installed Windows 7 in the remaining unallocated space and I was planning on doing a grub update from a live cd afterwards. BUT when I looked at my partition table, the space where the ubuntu partition used to be is now unallocated space!

I am currently downloading Ubuntu from a torrent at: [URL]. The file will be Ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso at 689Mb. I have a dial-up connection so the download is taking a long time to complete. I understand this to be a disk image file. I am using Windows XP v5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435 : Service Pack 3) as the operating system on my Emachine. This computer supports booting from a USB drive in the BIOS. I also have a DVD/CD +R+W drive to burn a disk image to if needed.
In short I want to install Ubuntu on a bootable partition of a NTFS external USB hard drive.
The external hard drive is a Western Digital 320Gb USB 2.0 that came formatted as NTFS.
I plan to use "EASEUS Partition Master 4.1.1 Home Edition" to create a ~40Gb NTFS partition on this drive for the Ubuntu install and any future Linux applications that I will acquire. The larger partition will be used for Windows backup storage and as a portable drive with a number of portable windows applications.
1) Should I use another file system other than NTFS? FAT? FAT32? Something Linux?
2) What steps are required to install Ubuntu on the partition?
In addition I would like to try to run Ubuntu inside a "shell" inside Windows XP from time to time. I have software (VMware player v3.0.0-197124) that I think can accomplish this. I have the following security and utility programs running:
WinPatrol (real-time)
SpyWare Terminator (scheduled scans)
WinMem Optimizer (real-time)
ThreatFire (real-time)
PC Tools FireWall Plus (real-time)
Avast Antivirus (real-time)
3) Are any of these programs known to interfere with the installation of Ubuntu or with Ubuntu running in a shell?

I used gparted to create 60GB free space which I then formatted as ntfs. However,when I go to install XP I get the blue screen of death.I know the XP installation disc is OK.The ntfs partition (sda3) is after the ext4 partition (sda1) - could this be the source of the problem?

I used Windows XP's encryption to encrypt some folders on an NTFS Hard Drive.Upon mounting this drive in ubuntu, I can see all folders, and all file names, but I cannot open the contents of the encrypted files, getting "Permission Denied" despite all permissions being -rwxrwxrwx.Is there a way to open these from linux? I know the Windows XP login / encryption password.

So, my GParted (Ubuntu) won't create an NTFS partition (the option is greyed out). I'm trying to create an NTFS partition to allow for a Windows 7/Ubuntu dual-boot. Everywhere I check, they suggest either creating the NTFS partition in GParted BEFORE installing Windows OR leaving it "unallocated" with the Linux partition after it.
I have tried both now, with two results:
1) GParted can't create an NTFS partition within Ubuntu 9.10.
2) On the other hand, the Windows 7 Installer says that Windows can not create a partition or find a partition when I attempt to select the "unallocated" portion.
