I want to get rid of my Windows partition and delete every last vestige or residual information from the laptop.I installed Ubuntu 11.04 and used BleachBit's Free Disk Space to overwrite the files once there.Is there any data left like recovery data points?
View 6 RepliesI edited fstab so that my Windows disk partition will be automatically mounted when I log on. However, when I delete a file from said partition, I am told that the item(s) cannot be moved to trash - I can only permanently delete files from the Windows partition. Here is how I configured in fstab: Code: /dev/sda1 /media/Vista ntfs nls=iso8859-1,umask=000 0 0 I suspect I mis-configured the options. Can anyone see an issue?

But most of them do not get deleted out of the Trash. I have had the same address since about 1997 and there are certain spams I know I will get every day no matter what and I would like them gone for good. I know I could just Empty the Trash but I sometimes search for things in there, and it has come in handy having all those emails.

When I try to delete a file in the host directory (and sub-directories), I see the prompt, 'Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?'
I googled this issue and see some solutions that require editing fstab, but not sure if that's the right approach in wubi, and not so sure what edits I would make in fstab anyway.
I have ubuntu 10.10 installed I have 5 more NTFS partitions in my disk other then Home & root My problem is, when I try to delete a file or folder it says "Cannot move file to the Rubbish Bin, do you want to delete permanently? The file "Nisarg" cannot be moved to the Rubbish Bin." I have more 2 NTFS partition on portable hard drive. On It trash is working fine.My home and Root folder also haven't this problem.

I started with the live CD...so I don't know if this is a "wubi" thing or not. I'm trying to install onto an Intel X25 80GB SSD which formerly contained Windows 7. "Use entire disk" option chosen. The install went like a dream, a sheer joy to watch. Until I went to restart and there was Windows Boot Manager telling me there was a problem with my Windows installation. Correct, it's gone!
I started the live CD again, fired up gparted and deleted everything on on /dev/sda - the lot. Reinstalled 10.10 - rebooted - Windows Boot Manager still there. OK, yet another try. Back into live CD and this time fdisk, followed by shred, followed by verify that there's no partition table in gparted. Empty volume, no partition table.
Reinstalled 10.10 again & restarted. Yes, you guessed it. Windows Boot Manager is STILL there!
What on earth must I do to rid myself of this hated Windows Boot Manager? I feel like a complet twit, because I've installed Ubuntu over XP (etc) many times (on rotating rust, not an SSD admittedly but...a "disk" is a disk...is a disk)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu installed on an external hard drive. My ubunutu "Places" shows my windows partition which is on my internal hard drive. I would like to PERMANENTLY disable accessing windows partition in Ubuntu. I don't want to set authentication,etc. I want to PERMANENTLY disable it. I tried commenting "/etc/fstab" file but it still shows up in "Places" tab. I absolutely hate this. I would like to get rid of this. If nothing goes well I will get rid of Ubuntu itself.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm successfully accessed a local Windows Share folder with the "Places --> Connect to Server" tool, but I can't figure out how to get it permanently mounted so that I don't have to keep logging in every time I boot up. I understand that the solution is supposed to involve adding a line to fstab, but I've tried a dozen variations on it based on various tutorials I've found online to no avail. Is there any way to check and see how the "Connect to Server" tool is doing its magic? Or to make that permanent?

I'st just installed 10.10 on Virtual Box. I'm trying to map some windows drives (On the host) permanently. Using Places->Connect To Server etc I can connect to my windows box no problem and see the directories etc in Nautilus (2.32.0) all ok.But rebooting the system results in my having to log in again - I've looked atis that the only what to get this to work permanently?Also, and more importantly K-Develop (And possibly others) can't see this mapped drive when I want to open a file from it? What would be the problem here?

Actually i want to take a back of windows xp's users data which on d: or etc and that backup i want to store in samba share which i made on my centos 5.4 . To do this we need to mount samba share as local drive then any script or any software can detect that share easily in that drive.
3 partitions (in order): Windows 7, CentOS and shared data partition.
I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?
Though I kinda do wish that I could just fully migrate to Fedora (or Linux in general), I still do need Vista for some things (like, until I can get this mess with my tablet and speakers sorted out). However, when I tried to boot into Vista this morning (by selecting "other" in GRUB) it said "BTMNGR is missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart."
Will I have to use the Vista Home Premium installation disc to fix this? Surely, telling it to automatically fix startup problems would work, right? I'll try later today PS This problem could also be related to my other 'yum update' problems. All of my problems started when I performed a whole kernel update, so that could also be why I can't boot into vista.
I am new to Ubuntu 10.04 and so far I love it! I recently created a LiveUSB and I am running Ubuntu from my USB drive with preserve mode.
I changed the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts files with my new hostname and everytime I reboot those files are going back to original state and change the hostname back to ubuntu...
The rest of my installed applications and settings are preserved... Is there a way to permanently change the host name?
Right now I'm duel booting Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04. I installed Ubuntu with wubi. I want Ubuntu to be my only operating system, so how would I delete Windows XP?

It gave me some trouble, because when I tried to delete the folder, it said it couldn't move it to the Trash. When I restarted, it won't let me log in Ubuntu again...

I installed GParted Editor on Ubuntu. I'm looking at it. There's 4 partition selections, all apparently deletable. The problem is... I don't know which partitions are Windows. Therefore, I don't know which to delete.
None says Windows. There's the word label at the top. I do see DellUtilty and DellRestore under label on two partitions... and pretty sure my computer is a dell. Are the latter two windows and therefore can be deleted? The two remaining partitions, are Linux?

The first contains my Windows partition (with Windows 7 on it) and the second contains my backup partition.
