With Ubuntu 11.04 Firefox is always on. How do I go about turning it off so that it only turns on when I want it on? As it is now I can't get to Google or the internet because if I click Firefox I am told that it is already running and need to close it first. But I see no means to close it.

The result is that if I click on the down arrow to go down from the top of a page, the window will scroll down to the bottom of page without stopping, even if I take pointer off the arrow.The reverse is also true if I am trying to go up from the bottom of a page. Great for very fast reader but not for me. Is this a problem anybody else has seen? For me it is new to 11.3 but there have been so many Firefox upgrades since I ran 11.2 I cannot determine precisely when it started
View 4 Replies View RelatedUsually but not always, when I try to scroll down by clicking in the vertical scroll bar - instead of going down approx 1 screen firefox slowly and jerkily and out of control goes all the way to the bottom of the page. If it is a long page I wait a long time.
The wheel on the mouse works fine, moving the vertical scroll handle with the mouse works fine, pushing the down arrow also works fine.
Alternatively - sometimes the vertical scroll works as I expect it to.
Alterntively - when I use Opera it scrolls as I would expect.
On Fedora 13 if I change a theme for Firefox the buttons are always spaced the same way. If I try to install the Vista theme style of Ff the forward and backward page view buttons will not be joined but be separated and placed the same distance apart as the original Firefox theme. Also this concept matches my file manager layout.
So my thinking is there must be an application somewhere up on the chain that controls (template) for windows themes, GTK maybe? Whatever controls the themes must be an API of another program. What is this program and can it be edited to change the control button template?
I don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.
I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

Recently I have installed Fedora 10. It comes with firefox 3.xx by default. Now I was wondering if there is any way through which i can update it to 3.5 version though yum. I have tried yum update firefox but it did not work and returns following messages Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Setting up Update Process No Packages marked for Update I know that one way to update is download the latest Tar package and use it, but I want to totally remove my previous installation and use solely one package i.e. firefox 3.5.

But I have no tools to control the fan speed from 'acpi'. in particular '/proc/acpi/fan' is an empty directory.
There are no fan info/controls in BIOS either.
I believe the fans do not work as fast as they should and I am trying to find a way to fix this before the cpu cores are melted down from overheating.

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
Since a while,the energy-saver shuts down the screeago,it happens after half an hour,but I didn�t set it up in that orders !It makes menervous,short time away from the comp,and soon the screen is dark!And the screensaver will not appear any more,too.I tried to enlarge the times in the energy-manager,created a new profile,switched off the laptopmode-service,nothing helps!And it seems,if there is no possibility to set one of the profiles up,they can only be changed,deleted or newly created.Is there really no place to force it to the required settings?Under the good old KDE3.5,it was no problem,to get it work like I want it to.My 64-bit system runs under openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.Is here any salvation for my nerves
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.
My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?
The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.
So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi remember back a few years ago you could partition the drive by simply sliding a slider, and now trying to install ubuntu next to xp my dad was unable to set it up. This is a big step back for the design of the partitioner. He was able to set up ubuntu 7.04 on his old computer many years ago when i was not there. He tried to set up 10.04 today and got so frustrated with ubuntu wanting to take most of his drive, that he gave up. why was the "simple slide to set space you where going to give ubuntu" taken away. he just wants to set up the space he didn't want to deal with root, swap space, and so on. he just wanted to set up a block of space that ubuntu can use however it wants. but the partitioner will not let him. this needs to be fixed. the install process must be simple to use by everyone. i do not want my friends and family getting frustrated with installing it. he was excited to try the new ubuntu till he got to dealing with the partitioner and after that he wanted nothing to do with ubuntu. the installer is the first thing they see make that the primary focus of "easy of use".

I have integrated ATI Radeon 3200 HD graphics on my motherboard and can't get things working.
I got installed debian 6.0.1a en my compaq presario 1255 (amd-k6 with 160 Mb and 4.3 Gig), but I had to use expert install to be able to select lilo instead of grub2. I ended with a very basic system (it only uses 8Mb in console mode, and 28 Mb in fluxbox plus an xterm). It is still a very usable machine.
Previousy, I was able to install lenny 5.0.8 just with normal console mode install
I think that with lenny, the fan of the notebook (I mean the "external" one, I do not know if there is another in the micro) some times was on. but i do not think it works at any moment now with wheezy
I have been googling a couple of hours, but I am not getting a clear idea about fan and notebooks.
What have I to check? is it a module? something related to acpi?
Upgraded to Lucid and there is no volume control on the upper panel just to the left of the date calendar/time like there was on Karmic and earlier versions. Searched but can't find it. How can I put it back on the upper panel? It looked like a speaker with sound waves coming out of the speaker. I always used it on other versions before.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got 10.10 up and running like a champ. Haven't done much in it, but all was well. After a little while I went in to turn the cool effects on, and it told me I needed a driver for my ATI card so I said go for it. It ended up putting Catalyst Control Center in for me. That's all fine and dandy except on the windows side I can get into an area that allows me to adjust overscan and turn it off (its a slider for under and overscan).
This version wont seem to let me do that, so now I'm stuck with either NOT a full screen, or no ability to have fun graphic effects. While your here, how can I change the data files which I think ubuntu refers to as your /home folder (documents pictures etc) to a different location? Windows7 and Ubuntu need to see the files in the same places so I don't have to have two working sets of files.
I'm new to Linux, and i was playing around with wubi for some time, and now i made a fresh instal of 11.04 64bits, no problems so far! But one thing was change, the boot system. My computer is used by me and my daughter (7years old), and when i was using the wubi instalation when booting she only see Wyndows 7 and Ubunbtu, . Now with this fresh instalation, i think is grub o takes control, she have a hard time to try to enter in W7, because of all "offers" from their.
So my question is, can i change the boot system to w7 control (like with wubi)?
My mythbuntu 10.10 system including its lirc managed remote control has been working fine.I've recently done some updates (see below) and now the remote doesn't work correctly (only some of its keys seem to work). I have F15 fresh install on Samsung Q45. The brightness function key is recognized but doesn't really increase or decrease brightness. It is set to maximum.There was a workaround in F14 for same problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from jaunty and somewhere in the process (or just after, I'm no longer sure just when it started) I started getting this error whenever I try to install or upgrade a package. Some of my software isn't working properly - some won't even load - so I'm not sure if the installations are actually succeeding, or not. But apt-get install -f shows nothing but a list of stuff I need to autoremove (mostly dev files). This particular message is the output of the details tab in synaptic, but I've gotten the same thing in terminal from apt-get. Quote:

I would like to be able to play around with the 10.10 without any risk of damaging my 10.04 install. However, it seems grub2 control was transfered to 10.10. How do I return control to my original distro?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn the past I have used Slackware, but I changed to Gentoo because Slackware don't have a nice package manager. I like Gentoo very much, because you have control over your installation from the very beginning. You can tweak your installation, before it's a running installation.
The main problem is that you need to compile everything from source (this has some benefits), but i haven a 3.0ghz pentium 4, so compiling a full system takes days. That's not I want.
Because of that I tried Debian, it's nice because of the large collection of precompiled packages. However, it's seems like it is less Stable then Gentoo (i run debian sid, because i need the newer applications). It's also harder to configure to my needs.
Is there a (Gentoo-based) distribution that gives the user a lot of control on the installation proces (like gentoo) and afterwards gentoo-like configuration (it was so much better then Debian, for example: Where is the xorgconfig utility in debian? I know there is something called dpkg-reconfigure to configure X, but that didn't asked me about videocard and monitor settings, only keyboard related options)
But the distribution must have binaries for all (or at least a lot of) programs.
Is there such a distribution? What does come closest to my needs?
I've just upgraded my web/tv setup from 9.10 to lucid and everything seems to be working apart from my infra red remote control.The remote was working fine in 9.10 and was used to control mythtv-frontend however after the upgrade the remote appears to be controlling ubuntu natively, i.e. right left up and down control what is selected on the desktop where as previously the remote was set to only work within mythtv. Whilst native support for my remote control is muchly appreciated(if that is what this is) where can I configure the controls so that it is usable again?

I have a Dell Vostro 1520 laptop and dual boot Windows 7 and Debian 7.8 64-bit. Windows 7 does use a lot of resources and the cooling fan kicks in almost all the time and it's a bit noisy. So I installed Debian which makes a big difference as it uses less resources so the fan is on less often.I just installed LXDE desktop to try to reduce this even further and I must say it is much better but fan still comes on even when laptop is quite cool so not sure why fan is kicking in so early.
Any best software to control when the fan comes on. If there are any good tools that are easy to install for someone who is quite new to linux? URL...
Volume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer.They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.
This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?
Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. Is anyone else experiencing this?I can adjust the volume with Kmix 3.5 or GNOME Volume Control V2.1
