Ubuntu :: RAM / Memory - Upgrading - DDR2 - DDR2

Oct 27, 2010

I just purchased this laptop a few days ago and already I am wanting to upgrade the RAM and such. In the terminal when I typed 'sudo lshw' it gave me all of my system information and I have two RAM slots, one is 1GB and the other is 2GB. This laptop can be maxed out at 8GB which is my plan but the RAM in here is 800MHz DDR2. What exactly does the 800MHz mean and what happens if I buy RAM that's DDR3? Do I have to get exactly 800MHz DDR2 RAM when I upgrade or can I order better? The ram I was looking at is two sticks of 4GB(4096MB) DDR3 1333MHz but will this even work in my laptop or blow it up?

Ubuntu :: Horizontal Lines Cutting The Video In 10.04 With Nvidia N9500gt By Msi

May 18, 2010

I'm having video issues with my graphic card while using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32 bits. When I'm watching video (Either on ....., or a dvd or whatever) There are horizontal lines cutting the video, like when there's very fast movement it doesn't render the video smoothly and so I get to see like vertical divisions, I don't know how to explain it exactly. I have a driver installed, one that installed automatically when I turned normal effects on, but I don't even know which one it is, I'm very new to this.

Hardware :: DDR2 800/667 RAM On A 667 FSB - Comparison

Feb 9, 2010

I'm looking at a new board that supports both DDR2 800 and DDR2 667. But, the FSB is only 667MHz. My question is: is there a benefit of using the DDR2 800 on the 667 FSB? That is, can the DDR2 800 be fully utilized on this system? What are pros and cons of such? Does the added benefit outweigh the additional cost of the RAM?

Note: I'm not looking to overclock at all, and this is not going to be used for 3D apps (games or video editing).

Hardware :: Ram Memory - DDR3 And DDR2?

Jul 28, 2010

I'm wanting to update my existing 1GB Kinsgston 240 pin DIMM memory to 2GB or more. Can I keep my existing IGB and add another from a different manufacture? Will they match or should I just get new memory? What is available is DDR3 and DDR2. Guess what I'm asking is I have two memory slots total one will have the existing 1GB and I want to add at least 1GB more, does the DDR3 or DDR2 matter? Or is it all about the 240 pin config?

Debian Hardware :: Why 2x2GB DDR2 RAM Read As 3.6GB

Jan 28, 2011

Just installed 2 pcs of 2GB DDR2 RAM specifically KVR80032N6/2G-SP from kingston. For dual channel as my board supports it plus the memory I could afford to buy now. Though I am using the RAM for shared memory -- I don't think it's using a lot. If I understand it right 2GB is roughly equivalent to 2048MB. So two of these becomes 4096MB -- less 256MB for the shared video ram -- that would be around 3840MB. Unless my board is using 512MB of shared video ram and that would be 3584MB w/c is closer to 3.6GB. Never mind I'll just check my shared Video RAM.

Ubuntu Installation :: 64bit Use More RAM Than 32bit?

Apr 30, 2010

I have downloaded the 64bit version of Ubuntu 10.04. I am currently using 8.10 32bit and I want to clean install 10.04 64bit version. However the one thing that is putting me off is that I have heard if your PC has 1GB of RAM or less then 64bit won't run very good because it uses more RAM than 32bit. (my PC has 1GB) So the question is: Does 64bit use more RAM than 32bit?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot In 10.04. 32bit

May 4, 2010

I've made a fresh install with the alternate cd, because for same strange reason I was unable to boot into the live CD.

After the instalation, I have rebooted the PC and under the log in screen of ubuntu 10.04, was a path or line of text describing an error (can't remember the type of error.)

Then the line disappeared, and i was able to log in normally.

Everything looked fine, after some testing and tweaking of the new system, I tried to reboot (to test). I choose ubuntu 10.04 in grub manager, and then there was just a sea of code on a black screen.

The previous release of ubuntu worked well on my PC

Ubuntu Installation :: Migrating From 32bit To 64bit?

Mar 15, 2010

Ive been using Ubuntu 32bit on my work Dell E6400 for nearly a year now with no problems. It is capable of running Ubuntu 64bit and Ive tried out the live CD which seems ok. I have a spare 40GB HDD and a USB caddy so Id like to install Ubuntu 64bit onto that and start working with that as a trial. Once im happy I can get all the usual things I need for my work (like vpnc) working then I'll wipe the main internal HDD and install Ubuntu 64bit.

Apart from backing up my home directory, id like to backup a list of my installed packages as a list of reference so I know what to add into my new install. Is there a "apt" command to do this and list the packages in a way where if I install those packages, I'll not hit any dependancy problems by installing one before another?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From Lucid 32bit To 64bit

Jul 21, 2010

I am going to upgrade from Lucid 32-bit to Lucid 64-bit, and I have some questions as to what I need to do. My system is a dual boot of XP and Lucid, but I only use XP rarely nowadays. I know I have to do a clean install, so here goes. Do I have to blow away my current install of Lucid? If the answer to (1) is yes, what about Grub? How do I get a list of my currently installed applications?

Currently Lucid is on one partition. I have a Clonezilla copy of the file system. Can I restore the /home directory from that copy once I have installed the 64-bit system? If I decide to make /home a separate partition, are there any good rules of thumb about how much space to allocate to the various partitions? Are there any other directories or files I should consider copying from the Clonezilla copy?

I just downloaded and burned Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit to install as a dual boot on my Dell Optiplex GX270 with WinXP and 256mb RAM. I boot into the CD and I select install now, and then an error message pops up saying it failed to start the installation, and that it is going to start a graphical interface so you can investigate the problem and try again. I really would like to install Ubuntu on my desktop because its much faster than Windows XP and I can't use wubi because of the 256mb ram.

Is it possible to just install 64bit ubuntu over my 32bit existing installation? Could I preserve the customizations I've made? what about application settings like chrome, firefox, compiz, etc.? Would I have to meticulously reinstall all of the little things I've done to my ubuntu installation?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 64bit To 32bit - Ati Drivers Don't Work?

Mar 22, 2010

Short of the story is I have an AMD64bit system for my 'server'. I find that there is lacking package support for ubuntu 64bit. Some apps I want to install work fine on 32bit ubuntu but not in 64bit ubuntu. More importantly the 64bit package for my ati drivers don't work, however they do on a 32bit version of ubuntu.

It would make sense to do a fresh install of ubuntu 32bit to avoid problems like this in the future. However my server has been running for years.. since ubuntu6. And it is highly customized. It would take too long to configure my server from scratch, I really want to avoid that. So I'm wondering, next time I do a dist upgrade.. say from 9.10 to 10.04. Is there a way I could trick the update manager in to upgrading to 32bit packages/kernel etc?

Ubuntu Installation :: Will 64bit Flash Drive Then Boot Using A 32bit PC?

Oct 12, 2010

I am trying to use the usb startup creator to make a xubuntu 10.10 ( with downloaded .iso) startup disk to a 2gb flash drive. I formatted the drive to ext4, and when I start the usb creator I get this error: "Failed to install the bootloader."

1. Should I have formatted the drive to ext4? In the usb creator instructions the author used ext3 as an example.
2. I am using the 64bit .iso file. I am trying to make the drive from a 64bit pc running ubuntu 10.04 (64bit).
3. If I can get this to work, will the 64bit flash drive then boot using a 32bit pc? (I wouldn't want to install it, but rather boot to use as a portable OS.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install 10.4 On Gateway PC

Jul 28, 2010

I am having trouble installing ubuntu on a new to me gateway computer. The spec's are as thus: Intel Celeron Cpu 2.4GHz, 1.25 GB DDR RAM, 250 GB ATA 5200rpm HD. I have tried installing Ubuntu 10.4, Ubuntu 9.10, Xubuntu 10.4 and Lubuntu 10.4. Neither Ubuntu 10.4 or 9.10 would boot from live cd and after full install would freeze on the loading 5 dot screen with no messages. Xubuntu would freeze sooner.

Lubuntu would go live but after a full install would come up with this error, "(process:219): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id". All of the cd's work fine on my laptop and I have checked them for defects. I have tried safe graphics mode a changing around a few options. So I was wondering if this computer just won't take Ubuntu or is there a work-around on the command line? I've only been working with Ubuntu for about 6 months.
