View 4 RepliesI've tried updating from 8 to 10 using updater and it failed. I'm currently running off a LIVE CD and want to back up my files to do a re-install. My problem is that some of my folders are showing as "unreadable", that I am "not the owner" and I cannot seem to change the permissions for them. I also cannot seem to copy them to back them up. Have I lost these folders? Is there any way to retrieve them?

But i observed that the folder default-config is missing. I have purge it apt-get and reinstalled but still it does it have that folder. What could cause this thing and how can i go about it?
I cannot change directory to a more than three folder tree destination folder from ~ in terminal. I've checked everything. No Typos or misspell. The destination folder was recognized by "ls" command but when I went to it, the terminal said, "no such file or directory."

The 'Change device' button does nothing when I click on it during installation. I'd like to install the boot loader on my /boot partition. View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been setting up a media server on a an actual server machine I picked up dirt cheap, and had it running xUbuntu fine. gave it a 5gig root directory, 5gig swap partiton, and three 34gig storage drives. Everything was running smoothly.
Just recently I learned that the 5gig's dedicated to running my operating system of choice, aren't enough to install all the software I wanted(I might be just a little greedy). The first logical step to correcting this problem was to move /etc to one of the storage drives and create a link were it was, but not being entirely sure how xUbuntu would take that, I thought I'd get an expert opinion.
The thread prefix is "all variants" because I have installed the desktops for kUbuntu and just plain Ubuntu on this machine(what I meant by being a little greedy).
I recently had ubuntu as my main operating system on my computer, but that wasn't working out because iTunes just does not work on ubuntu. So I started to try to dual boot windows XP, but when I tried to create the partition, all of them crapped out on me, so now I'm left with a computer boot anything, it just goes straight to error loading operating system. Now I can't get the one folder that I need off of the ubuntu installation because I don't have permission too.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed UNR 10.04 the other day, and it was my second time to install due to complications in the first go around. I installed UNR specifying partitions manually, and erased my first install and used that partition for my current one. In the process I shrank the swap area from 5G to 2G in order to match up to my RAM and free up 3G of space I could now use. Here is where I goofed: I was left with around 114G of free space, then the 2G of swap, then 3G of more free space. Well I specified the 3G to be mounted at /home hoping it would just add that free space to the big 114G space. But, alas, now I have a home folder that has only 1G of free space, and more music and movies I wish to save. How can I get more room in my /home folder or merge it somehow to all be in the main install space?

All was working fine until three hours ago when I started my pc and selected ubuntu, it gave me grub command line. I figured it was because grub couldn't find ubuntu. I have previously put my home folder on a separate partition.Having foolishly assumed that it would pick up the home folder as such after the install. Of course it didn't. The partition is still intact but it is not being recognised as the home folder.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine. I logged in and installed a few programs like wine. Everything went fine until I rebooted. Now, after I log in, it gives me 2 error messages: One about how it could not update ICEAuthority or something
Another about how usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check2 returned status 256. Then, something else pops up about how Nautilus can't find or doesn't have permission to write to home/user/Desktop and ome/user/.nautilus. I tried booting in recovery mode and did a dir on /home, but nothing showed up, which makes me think that they somehow disappeared or they aren't being shown.
I'm trying to create a folder using the archive manager to install Resin (web server) in the usr/local folder but I get the error message 'error creating directory: Permission denied.'
Is this the easiest way to install an app--by using the Archive Manager--and if so how do I establish the correct permissions.
i wanted to expand my disc space using an sd card and did this
sudo mv /home/name_of_home_folder home/name_of_home_folder_bk
sudo mkdir /home/name_of_home_folder
sudo mount /dev/sdXX(sd card) /home/name_of_home_folder
after this i cannot boot says cannot boot ,nautilus cant find home folder etc &more after doing alt-ctrl-f1 and doing login i can find my old home folder with all inside the point is how i can change to my old home folder -have to find the solution in order not to do format again i use ubuntu desktop edition on an acer aspire one netbook with ssd 8gb -

I downgraded from 11.10 to 10.10 via installation CD, because the 11.10 installation was lost beyond recovery.
The 10.10 installation works fine except one problem During the installation, I selected manual setup of Partitions and my home partition was not recognized as /home but only as ext4.
Fortunately I managed to recognize it, due to the size of the partition, so I prevented this partition from being formatted.Now, this partition is not my home partition, but just an ordinary partition, which I can access and where all my files are present.Anybody knows any magic trick, how I can make this partition my home partition?
when installing ubuntu, the installer asks for username/login/password of the first user which will be allowed to sudo and administer the system... let's call that user "ubuntu"
what if I want to:
1) Automate those answers (which preseed variables should I set if any?)
2) Change the default home directory only for that user... let say I want it to be /ubuntu instead of /home/ubuntu (because I want /home/ to be empty after setup).
I know I could tweak /etc/passwd after setup (before first reboot) but I would like to know if there is a "clean way" to do that.
I had some trouble with my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 so I decided to reinstall the OS. (I have my /home on a separate partition).

I re installed Ubuntu on the partition I set aside for the OS. Ubuntu installed, everything works as it should but now all the contents my Home folder is gone! I need to store a copy of my c drive someplace in case installing corrupts my hard disk, I was wondering if it is safe to store a entire c drive on another computer in a folder, and if I do, can I format a corrupt hard drive then copy the contents of the stored c drive folder back into it and the computer will work again.

Now all I see after the winboot load is the grub 'dos' screen. I can get to grub rescue but thats it. I was wondering if there is a way to download the missing files from somewhere and place them in the grub folder as I am dual booting with XP.
I have installed Ubuntu onto a seperate partition as well.
