Ubuntu Installation :: CPU At 100% Usage After 9.10 Upgrade
Apr 4, 2010
I recently upgraded two of my computers from 9.4 to 9.10. They are: HP Pavilion a510n (Desktop) Gateway T-1620 (Laptop)
Both are having the same problem. They are running at constant 100% CPU usage. when I look into the task manager there is no apparent cause. all active processes add up to at most 25%. On the desktop its just noisy cause the fan is always running at full blast. on the laptop however, it causes it to auto shutdown after 15 minutes or so due to overheating.
Im concerned that this is going to cause long term damage to my machines.

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 without any visible issues. But after a few days system started to behave strange - first it shows the message that gnome-power-manager is not correctly installed on login screen. The it wasn't able to log in even - so I found that problem might be that it shows not enough space on the root partition. This is really strange for me - I do not have any special data there.
See what I have after df command:
/dev/sda2 9614148 8618864 506908 95% /
none 1024128 360 1023768 1% /dev

I upgraded from Fedora 13 to 14 over the network. Everything seems to have worked. The one problem after my install is that I have noticed that setroubleshootd consumes alot of memory.
[Code]
It doesn't take long for setroubleshootd to jump in memory usage. I can kill the process but it will start up again. I have tried disabling the service but it doesn't show up in /etc/init.d. # service setroubledshootd stop setroubledshootd: unrecognized service So I am not sure what I can do to resolve the issue with setroubleshootd besides killing it off every 15 minutes.

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results. For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:
Code:
[root@Zion ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade

I would like to know if I can update a live USB version of 10.04I am, unofficially, running ubuntu 10.04 live USB version from a partition on my 250GB USB HDD at work. All the apps I use are web bassed except for zeacom and groupwise which I run from a virtual machine I created using virtualbox ose, this machine is one the network running AD and novel and also MS office and uniflow printing
Everything at the moment is running quite well: I tried this a while ago (9.04 or earlier) but I tried enabling update manager and this killed the boot for my live USB and I don't what to risk toying with a system that is running well but I also want to be up to date.

well I went to wubi-installer, and installed Ubuntu, and I love it, I don't want to go back to windows 7, but anyways, I set Ubuntu to my D: Drive, (200GB Space) and I installed Steam (Steampowered.com) to get my games on Ubuntu. I installed all of my games, but here is a big problem, I can't figure out how to use more than 30GB on Ubuntu, it just doesn't work. I got GParted, and the D: drive is set to 195 GB (200, but Ubuntu used 5GB)

I've come across a really strange issue with one of my RHEL servers. The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":
Code:
[root@server1 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 12011 7946 4065 0 4 23
-/+ buffers/cache: 7919 4092

While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.

I can't upgrade. I get: Quote: Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'skype-common' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later. I tried again several times in different days and it is the same. I have 10.4 recently updated from my original installation of 9.10. I think it was not a pre-release, I did it automatically from the website and it took a long time. As far as I know, all I have installed is official, except perhaps Skype itself.
