Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - Unable To Boot - Invalid Command
May 24, 2011
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS on my computer and realized I wanted to give 11.04 a try. So, using the Update Manager both times, I applied all updates then upgraded to 10.10 then to 11.04.
Here's where the problem starts. Grub loads fine. I choose Ubuntu. I briefly get a purple splash screen then a black screen with some text that looks like Ubuntu is trying to load (I've attached a picture of this screen). This screen flashes a couple times then stays up and nothing happens afterwards. I can input text and commands but I get no response. Not even an "invalid command". The only thing I can do is press CTRL+ALT+DEL and my computer will reboot.
I have Ubuntu installed alongside Windows 7 on a 50Gb partition (plenty right?), AMD 64-bit dual core processor, and an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card. This is on an HP Pavilion dv3 laptop.

Have been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...

Bottom Line: Dvd Drive died in my toshiba laptop and it was replaced (not before tech for some reason reformatted the Win7 partition... which was 100% un-needed, but thats beside the point now. I redid win7 (the tech installed vista) and am TRYING to "redo grub". Facts: The Slackware AND Ubuntu Partitions ARE STILL THERE and when i use SuperGrub Boot CD (which doesn't restore my grub by itself) to boot into slackware, i can see ALL THE CONTENT of both Linuxes still there including grub on ubuntu partition
(Tri-Boot: Ubuntu, Slackware, and WIn7) I had it working for two years or so, SO i know this "setup" works fine. I am A) Trying to do this as simply as possible. B) Trying to avoid the need to download a 800MB ISO (as seen for this issue on this forum) and trying not to have to reformat Ubuntu Partition (though I have the .Debs I have downloaded for it backed up ... all 1.7GB of them) I have /dev/sda1 as win7, /dev/sda2 as Slack and /dev/sda3 as Ubuntu (which contains Grub Legacy).. Every command I do seems to result in an error like "invalid command" or "invalid Execution format " (i think that second one is right) type errors. I compiled (awhile back) a few kernels for Slackware, but feel goofy that I cant figure what i this out (what i thought was going to be a "2 minute" fix)

I installed Debian 5.03 Lenny successfully on my machine. I got this error during boot: ACPI : invalid PBLK length [5]. After that the Operating System boots properly and starts normally. What does this error statement mean? Is it safe to work with this installation despite this error?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my machine which already has Windows 7 (I want to be able to dual-boot). I had no problems installing Ubuntu but now I cannot boot Windows, I get this error after selecting Windows in the Grub boot menu:
Error: invalid signature
Press any key to continue
When I press a key I'm returned to the Grub menu. There I can boot Linux without problems. I have two 500 GB disks in a RAID 1 array. Windows 7 is installed there. Then I have a 1.5 TB disk where I installed Linux in a partition I created for it. I think the problem may be that I have RAID because this seems to show up as two disks and not one:
more /boot/grub/device.map
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
(hd2) /dev/sdc
Three disks and not two.
If I do sudo update-grub I get this:

I have a fairly old computer, (4 years) it is has an Intel Pentium 4 3,4 Ghz processor with 1,5Gb RAM, and had been running XP Home on a 80Gb HDD. About three weeks ago, I purchased a 500Gb HDD, and disconnected my old drive. I partitioned the new drive to 120 Gb and 380Gb. I put XP Pro on the 120Gb partition, and Ubuntu 9.10 on the balance.
On reboot, startup menu (grub?) gave me the option to boot from, among others, Ubuntu 9.10, and XP Pro. Both worked fine! I then reconnected the old drive, and if I wanted to boot up in XP Home, would tap "F8" on start-up, and select the old HDD to boot from. This was working fine and I was happy with the way it worked! This morning, when I re-booted, the Start-up menu now had XP Home added to the list.
If I select either Ubuntu 9.10 or XP Home, they both work fine, but if I select XP Pro, it give me the message "error: invalid signature" and when I press any key, brings me back to the menu.

I have a SONY laptop, PCG-7181M model. It came with Windows 7 but I changed the OS to Ubuntu. Last night it asked me to upgrade to the new version called Natty Narwhal. I had to go to bed so I changed the sleep timer on the laptop to 2 hours, the time it would have taken the upgrade to complete. I woke up and the laptop was off, now only the grub menu shows up and the laptop won't boot. I tried doing this: - When the machine boots up, press Esc to get to the Grub menu - Select one of the recovery mode options. This will boot you up to a single-user root prompt. - Run sudo fdisk /dev/sda (this assumes that your hard drive is at sda) - Type p to see which hard drive partition is labeled Linux swap. In my case the partition was /dev/sda5. Type q to exist fdisk. - Type these commands:

On my Laptop is an 80 GB HD. I installed Windows XP first (at this point it worked perfectly) then installed on the same HD, but on other partitions Archlinux.
The whole thing looks like this now:
/dev/sda1 <--- Windows xp
/dev/sda2 <--- arch linux (/, etc, etc^^)
/dev/sda3 <--- homes
/dev/sda4 <--- boot partition (grub)
(I got no SWAP partition, I got 4gb RAM (well can only use 3, since my system doesn't support 64bit), and my friend told me there's no absolute need for a a swap :>)
Arch Linux is booting perfectly (and very fast), but Windows XP doesn't want to boot anymore :>
(Just if it's from any importance: In the partition program I took the "bootable" flag away from my XP Partition and set it to sda4 - I thought I need to do that, but now I'm not so sure anymore :P )
My entry in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like this (I also tried various others)
title Windows
root (hd0,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1
When I boot and choose the Windows XP in the GRUB boot menu, the following message appears:
error 13: invalid or unsupported executable format
When I set root(hd0,1) to root(hd0,0) (what seemed the most logical to me) and boot again selecting the windows xp, then the GRUB cosole appears.
So what did I do wrong - or better said: what should I do now?

I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.
root@support-Latitude-E6400:/home/support# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
[code]....
I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.
title=Windows 7
rootnoverify (hd0,6)
makeactive
chainloader +1
When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?

I did the online upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, using 64 bit. I was forced to as the 2 solutions to my incedibly slow internet lookups both required new package installs, both of which failed, so hoped it was sorted out in 10.04 TLS.
It all went to plan until it tried to reboot. I get this:
mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/1e4e276c-8741-42e7-b52e-05c195790d28 on /root failed: invalid argument
mount:mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
[Code].....
I don't have RAID at all a single Samsung 200GB SATA drive as the boot drive. Can someone tell me where to start looking? Also how can a TLS release screw up so badly on a common Gigabyte motherboard?

i wanted to see the red hat side of things and do some virtualization with CentOS, so i am trying to dual boot ubuntu 10.04 LTS and CentOS 5.5. the machine is a laptop, toshiba A100 series. what I did was to create the following partitioning scheme via Ubuntu LiveCd
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 19457 156288290+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1 2103 16892284+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 2104 9988 63336231 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 9995 12623 21117411 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 12624 18800 49616721 83 Linux
/dev/sda9 18801 19457 5277321 82 Linux swap / Solaris
created an extended partition and in there have made sda5 and sda6 as / and home for ubuntu and sda7 and sda8 as / and home for CentOS. and sda9 as swap. I installed ubuntu first and then installed CentOS with no bootloader. Run sudo update-grub through ubuntu and now i have both Ubuntu and CentOS available. But when i select CentOS, i have an error which reads "invalid magic number".
I have grub2 installed, haven't downgraded or done anything to it and the ubuntu install is fresh, one week since i updated to 10.04 from scratch. I have found much contradictory stuff on google, but not something that provides a definite solution and also this post but the second command provided in the solution is one i cannot understand very well and it doesn't seem to work. what I am doing wrong here and how to make this work. I would prefer to do things via Ubuntu since debian stuff is what i am comfortable with and i am installing CentOS to learn not to do work on it.

I've been running a dual-boot ubuntu 11.04 64-bit and windows 7 64-bit for a while now, and recently got a new computer. I moved the hard drives to the new computer (one had both os's on it, the other was just a storage drive) and windows 7 would not boot, so I reinstalled it. I used a live cd to repair grub using boot repair /Boot-Repair) and everything looked to be going swell But when I tried to boot I got "invalid or damaged bootable partition" instead of a grub menu. so I went back and, copying and pasting the commands the program gave me, I manually removed and reinstalled grub on my ubuntu partition. same error. so, I backed up all my documents onto a third drive, wiped everything out, and started again. I installed win7 on one drive, and then when that was done, I installed ubuntu on the other. lo and behold when I tried to boot I got the same error message, and now I can't even boot from my windows drive. The ubuntu drive is fairly new and according to disk utility has no errors. Is this some problem with grub or what?

(Before I start, can I just say that I've joined these forums to ask this question, and I don't really know where to post this - sorry if i've put my question in the wrong section of the forum or something :S)
I've been looking into trying out ubuntu, having heard good things about it online, so I went to http://wubi-installer.org/ to try it out by dual-booting it alongside windows xp. I installed ubuntu, rebooted my pc and selected 'Ubuntu' at the boot menu, but after this screen, the monitor goes black and my TV displays the bouncing message of 'Invalid Format'.I've tried booting in safe graphics mode, which unfortunately didn't solve anything (or maybe I did it wrong). When looking online I've seen it seems to happen to lots of people with monitors like mine that can show TV and DVD as well as pc.

I've recently been trying to secure my Apache2 server running suPHP on an Ubuntu 10.10 box. My ideal solutions are to
1) Specify a specific php.ini on a per virtualhost basis. I have tried using the PHPINIDir directive inside a virtualhost block in my 'sites-available/default' file, but the parser throws an error
Invalid command 'PHPINIDir', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configurations I have figured out that the reason this directive is not recognized is because my server is running mod suPHP instead of mod php5. The default site on the server requires suPHP to perform certain administrative functions. First question would be, is there some other way to specify a specific php.ini besides using PHPINIDir, or does anyone have any ideas of how to get PHPINIDir to be understood under the current configuration?
2) Activate/Deactivate php5 on a per virtualhost basis. This will allow me to use PHPINIDir to specify a specific and secure php.ini. I know that I have php5 installed, as 'a2enmod php5' with a restart will activate php5 and override suPHP. Does anybody know what the commands would look like to load the php5 modules from inside a virtualhost block? I have looked around on the internet and found these two lines of code to add that will supposedly activate php5 under a virtualhost
LoadModule php5-module modules/libphp5.so
AddHandler php5-script php
I do not have a 'modules' directory in my /etc/apache2 folder, so I did a search for libphp5.so and found the only copy on my machine located in /usr/lib/apache2/modules. Naturally, I tried
LoadModule php5-module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so
AddHandler php5-script php
but received an error
apache2: Syntax error ...: Can't locate API module structure 'php5-module' in file /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so
Surely I can't be the only one who's needed to specify different php.ini files for different virtualhost's while using suPHP, and I'd also have to assume I'm not the first one who's tried to integrate suPHP and php5 on a per virtualhost basis. Anyone have any ideas? I'm completely stuck, and that's the worst kind of stuck. The Apache2, suPHP, and php5 installations on my machine are standard for Ubuntu 10.10

I'm running Debian testing and after a recent software update, suddenly I can no longer boot into my single Linux kernel image anymore. I did look at the software update before I did it and I don't believe that it removed any software packages. When I try to boot into my linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 image, I get the following message from grub:"error: unknown command `initrd'"..The same error appears if I try to boot into single-user mode. I have a Windows XP partition on the same hard disk and I am still able to boot into that from grub. I've searched the net and haven't really found my same problem replicated anywhere. I would imagine that the problem is just that somehow the initrd package got removed in my last software update, but again I don't recall seeing any software that the update planned to remove.
Any thoughts on how I would go about fixing this problem? Since I'm unable to get into Linux at all, I imagine I'll have to use a LiveCD to get in and fix the problem, but I don't know where to begin looking.

Apache is complaining about an error with SetEnvIfNoCase when I tried to start it. I've checked that the module /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_rewrite.so exists. Also the 2nd code block below shows that I'm using the <IfModule rewrite_module></IfModule> tags so if the module isn't available, Apache shouldn't have read that part of the file. The fact that it's reading inside that tag pair means it's able to load the mod_rewrite.so DSO.

Essentially my ksh script calls a program and passes some commands. It's entering the program just fine, but when it passes the commands it gets "invalid command" error, and loops for a bit.
When I run all the steps manually the program works fine. I turned debug on and see that it enters the program, cmbview, but for whatever reason, it fails on any command that it tries to parse.
Tried running it in a ksh shell, same error. Tried running it as bash shell, same error.
The cmbview exe works and the following commands work, so I can only assume its something with the script parsing the commands.
