Jun 18, 2010I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

Mar 19, 2010recently I have installed a brand new machine with 11.2. Machine boots so incredibly fast so I decided to upgraded another older machine from 11.1 to 11.2. Upgrade went fine but old machine boots significantly slower. On new I see message "doing fastboot" and few seconds later KDE starts loading. Amazing. On old I just experience regular boot, speed is comparable to old 11.1.What am I missing after upgrade? Same kernel, almost same set of services. Both machines are pretty regular PCs/x86_64, however old one have faster/better hardware (more cores, more GHz, more RAM, 2 disks in software raid-0).

Jul 20, 2010I cannot install 11.3 on a machine with an intel raid controller I have tried with raid 1 using the card and then setting the disks to individual raid 0 and letting suse raid them. With the card doing it the machines crashes as soon as it tries to boot the first time, with suse doing the raid I just get 'GRUB' on the screen It seems a lot of people are having similar problems, does any one have any pointers. 11.2 installs fine. Aug 27, 2010after f-ing up xp on my brothers laptop, and after much debate, we decided to give ubuntu a shot, considering its all free and windows isn't. installed ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx 32 bit, and let me tell you, it was a breeze. after messing with the os for a while, i was so impressed with linux i decided to install ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on my new rig. downloaded the iso on a disk, popped it in the disk drive, set bios to boot cd, and before i new it ubuntu was ready to download. selected install, then i got this error message.

May 8, 2011Linux ubuntu 11.04 does not install on my virtual machine? I have a problem installing ubuntu on my virtual machine. recently I downloaded ubuntu and burned it to a cd and a dvd. but now I have a problem, when after the setup is nearly 80% percent complete. the installation stops and says that cd or dvd has a problem. but I have tested the cd and dvd and even the dvd drive, also the .Iso file using 7zip and cd checker. I allocated 304 mb of ram out of 896 mb. I am using oracle vbox 4.0.6 and win xp as host.

Ubuntu Networking :: New Install Of Lucid Not Seeing Other Machine
Jan 5, 2011Does anyone know of a decent Ubuntu networking tutorial I can work through? I'm struggling to get a new install of Lucid to see anything on my home network.
The current state of play is:
I can browse the internet and the router.
I have several laptops running Ubuntu and a NAS drive but the HP desktop PC with the new Lucid installation can't see them.
The NAS and the HP are wired to the router.
I installed Lucid because I never got Maverick to see the network either.
Lucid on my laptop can see the NAS drive over wireless.
I can see the NAS drive but not the other machines if I boot the HP into WinXP.
I'm not much good at XP networking either so perhaps that needs configuring too. A decent tutorial would be useful, especially one that doesn't assume I have Windows machines on the network as we rarely use Windows now.

My parents Windows XP Dell machine won't boot (says it's corrupt, stops itself before windows loads). It's been dragged down by virus/malmare lately and is fairly sick.
I'm no Windows expert and can't seem to fix it, but I thought if I install Ubuntu for them they'd be alright, get them away from Windows for good�.but can anyone tell me in very simple terms the procedure I need to go through to install Ubuntu.
I can download Ubuntu now on my machine and burn it onto a CD or put it on a USB stick.
I'm especially keen to know how to ensure I retrieve all their data (mostly photos...they do have back up system but I've no guarantee it's actually be working lately).

Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).

All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.

Dec 3, 2008I have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work!
I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).
