Ubuntu :: Customize File Folders In Karmic?

May 27, 2010

Is there a way that I can download either a new folder management system for Ubuntu Karmic or at least customize the current one so it works better? I don't like when I'm trying to find a certain file such as a .mp3 and I can't sort it by the name of the artist or the name of the show? I know that the actual MP3 file as the meta data embedded into the file but with Ubuntu Karmic I can't seem to set it so it will display in the List Columns. When I tried to go to List columns to change the preferences it only gives me limited options of what I can display and most of them our useless such as MIME type, Octal Permissions, SELinux context, etc.. I want to have columns such as Name, artist, author, album, etc...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Increase In File Size Of Ripped CD Tracks To MP3 Between Previous Releases Of Karmic?

Mar 15, 2010

Has anyone else noticed an increase in file size of ripped CD tracks to MP3 between previous releases of Ubuntu and Karmic? Specifically using the same Gstreamer pipeline settings the file size in Karmic is now considerably larger than in previous releases like Jaunty or Intrepid. Is there a fix for this bug. Seems like Sound Juicer/Rhythmbox have some significant bugs in Karmic!

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Ies4linux In Karmic?

Feb 11, 2010

I've never had any use for IE, all the browsers that run natively are just fine. This is the first time I've actually needed it -- I'm applying for a job that happens to be on an IE only website. (Sofrustrating) I've tried many approaches to install Internet Explorer through wine and have failed so far. Everything I've read seems to point towards ies4linux. I attempted this:

Code:
wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
tar zxvf ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
cd ies4linux-*

[Code]...

IEs4Linux 2 is developed to be used with recent Wine versions (0.9.x). It seems that you are using an old version. It's recommended that you update your wine to the latest version (Go to: winehq.com). So I removed wine and installed version 1.0.1, which resulted in the same error. Is this wine version too new? even if it doesn't involve ies4linux.

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Nvidia 190 On Karmic

May 16, 2010

I just recently upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic and now I can't seem to get the nvidia drivers to work properly. It originally came up in low graphics mode and said that the 190 driver was installed, but it didn't work properly so I disabled it.After rebooting, the 190 driver will never properly activate. I tried launching jockey-gtk and it tells me to see /var/log/jockey.log which shows:

Code:

2010-05-16 08:54:58,054 DEBUG: Installing package: nvidia-glx-190
2010-05-16 08:54:58,778 ERROR: XorgDriverHandler.enable(): package or module not installed, aborting

I wasn't able to get the 185 drivers either until I did a manual apt-get install nvidia-glx-185. Then it eventually worked and nvidia-xconfig got my xorg.conf updated and correct. So now the 185 drivers are installed (though jockey-gtk does NOT show those drivers in green -- it doesn't think that I have any of the drivers enabled so all of the little bubbles show up as grey). The 185 drivers are definitely installed though (185.18.36 to be exact) and Compiz is enabled, desktop effects are on, etc.

Any idea what is up with this? Why doesn't jockey show the drivers that are installed and more importantly, how come I cannot install the 190 drivers? I tried doing it via apt but this is what it tells me:

Code:

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-190
[sudo] password for bdmayes:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

Ubuntu :: Did Karmic Install Two Kernels On Your System?

Apr 13, 2010

After I upgraded Jaunty to Karmic, I found that my grub menu has two pairs of OS options and that the kernel is slightly different between the two. The highest numbered kernel seems to be a working OS release but the next choice in the list does not work correctly - its mouse pointer is invisible!I originally had installed Intrepid in a partition and I used it for a while. Then I decided to upgrade to Jaunty so I put that release in a different partition. I had major troubles getting the system going after the upgrade but I eventually succeeded.Later, I decided to try out Karmic so I created a Live CD of it and tested that. It seemed to be good so I decided to do a standard upgrade. At this point I still had the original Intrepid version on disk in its own partition. The release notes suggested that a network upgrade was the preferred way to upgrade to Karmic so I did that, even though I had the CD. The process seemed to complete OK. I was getting some X windows complaints and X was running in low graphics mode so I uninstalled and reinstalled the fglrx driver; X was happy afterwards. That seemed to be the only significant problem with the upgrade.I noticed that my grub menu now had three fairly new selection pairs, as well as the memtest and the original Intrepid software. I had gained two pairs during the Karmic upgrade. I could not tell which was which by the kernel numbers. I decided that three sets were inappropriate and I decided to remove one set. I was hoping to remove whichever set was superfluous or unnecessary. I picked the oldest of the three (i.e., the one with the smallest kernel number) and used Synaptic to abolish it.

Now, I had two pairs left. The topmost pair is a working Karmic version which I am using right now. The other pair seems to be a broken version of Karmic. By that, I mean that it starts up exactly the same as the working version but when it gets to the login screen then there is no cursor! Actually, the cursor is there but it is invisible. I found that I could run the cursor all the way to the top right corner, click the left mouse button, and get the shutdown/restart/etc. menu. The keyboard's arrow keys could then be used to select a menu item and the mouse button would activate it. But all the while, the cursor was invisible! Of course, this makes the system useless. So, I think that I need to use Synaptic to remove the malfunctioning pair. Questions: why did the upgrade give me two kernels? Would it be safe to remove the earlier one? What I would really like is to have both Karmic and Jaunty available from the grub menu. I am afraid that I will have to do a new install in a different partition to get Jaunty back onto the system, and then will have to repeat all of the customizing and software installations that I have applied during the last year or so. Does anyone know of a shortcut around that?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

Since yestarday, wireless net stop working with my laptop hp compaq 6720S, dual boot vista/karmic.

In jaunty i had the gnome network manager fully working.

When i upgraded to karmic (last october), gnome network manager connected and disconnected the wireless all the time, doing internet unusable.

I fixed the problem installing wicd. I had wireless fully working.

But since yesterday, wicd cannot obtain ip address from wireless and when it can, connects and disconnects net all the time (behaving like gnome network manager). I have reported the problem in this network and wireless forum but yet i cannot obtain answer.

Well, my question is, as gnome network manager from jaunty worked, could i install this gnome network manager release in karmic to fix wireless?.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Karmic Won't Install On IBM Intellistation 185 PowerPC

Feb 10, 2010

I'm a big convert on using Ubuntu on my x86/x64 machines.I have a nice IBM Intellistation 185 Power PC (ppc) with dual 970 processors and 8gb of ram (and 3 SCSI 300 MB drives).I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it (the PPC distro) and it gets to the boot prompt, asks me how I want to install (I can choose "live" or "install", etc..). No matter which option I choose (I've tried them all) it hangs after trying to start the kernel at "returning from prom_init".

NI've also tried other distros to see where that got me - Debian does the exact same thing as Ubuntu (which makes sense). Yellow Dog Linux actually will install and run fine(I'm writing this from Firefox 3 in YDL). Since YDL works, I'd think that a version of Debian/Ubuntu should be able to work.Any ideas on how to debug this and find out why Ubuntu won't install (or even run the Live CD?)

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Or Remove Anything In Karmic Software Centre

Feb 1, 2010

For some time now I've put off installing Karmic as there seemed to be a bunch of complaints and issues right at the beginning (probably unfounded) and stuck to a nice and running 9.04.

Anyway over the weekend I had some problems. I won't go into them as it's along story and rather irrelevant now. The outcome was that I decided it was simpler to do a clean install so I backed up my files, downloaded and burnt a new Live CD for Karmic 9.10 and yesterday installed it. My first impressions are very good, I like it a lot!

The only thing I have a problem with is this. Under: Applications>Ubuntu Software Centre I seem unable to install or remove anything. By this I mean after selecting some application when I click on the Install or Remove button nothing happens apart from the slight flicker. Nothing...zilch! I can install using apt-get in terminal or using Synaptic just fine. My feeling is that its a "button" issue rather than with Software Centre...but who knows

From what I understand, this problem can be solved easily but you have to insert the install disc into /cdrom/, but I'm on an HP Mini 110 netbook and obviously don't have a cdrom drive. Is there some way I could redirect it to my usb or something? It doesn't seem to present the option. Every other release works with my wireless, but this is the only one that works with my sound lol so I'm damned either way. I still use 9.10 sometimes because I love it but I have to hook it up to an ethernet connection and that kind of defeats the purpose of having a netbook
