View 13 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to redirect all outgoing packets (destined for a specified ip address) from my slack box back to itself. I thought this could be done with iptables, but if I fire up wireshark I can clearly see that the packets are getting out to the real server and I'm getting responses from it.
So here's what I tried:
All looks good and fine, and then I even try to visit 194.28.157.42 with firefox (by the way I am running a webserver, that is set to show a page when you visit 127.0.0.1) and I get an error page that reads: 502 Bad Gateway.
I ignored this message to see what the program I'm trying to interrupt does, and when I start wireshark and then start the program that is using that website, I can clearly see that the packets make it to the real 194.28.157.42 and get back responses.
I need to configure iptables to block incoming traffic (except specific ports), but allows all outgoing traffic.
I am able to block incoming traffic, but doing so also prevents outgoing traffic (tested by telnet [URL] 80)
The following was used:
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I INPUT 1 -i lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -j DROP
Also, even allowing NOT SYN requests still prevents outgoing traffic.
iptables -I INPUT 1 -p tcp ! --syn -j ACCEPT
Another point:

I need to know what the Iptables "code" is to change the outgoing/Incoming IP for port 53 (DNS). I'm running CentOS on a dedicated server. I very familiar with Putty and SSH. If I get 2 consecutive packets from the same address and port from 192.168.100.0/24, they get SNAT-ed and come out of the same port on 10.1.1.1. If then I get another packet from the same address and port 10 minutes later, then it gets SNAT-ed, but comes out of a different port on 10.1.1.1. My question is: how can I set the time delay I would like iptables to remember its incoming address/port to outgoing port mappings?

I am trying to configure iptables for only HTTP and HTTPS traffic. I start by blocking all traffic, which works, via:

I've got two routers, 10.0.0.0/23 and 192.168.2.0/24, which are joined by a Linux box with interfaces eth0 (10.0.0.2) and ra0 (192.168.2.2). I've got masquerading for ra0, and a route to 192.168.2.0/24 on 10.0.0.0's router. Can I, with only the use of IPTABLES, limit the incoming bandwith for a protocol? We have for example servers that have a FTP and HTTP server running and whenever HTTP has a lot of connections open, the other uploads/downloads get a timeout. I know I can limit the number of connections but prefer to limit on protocol level. Is this possible using IPTABLES and if so, can someone indicate how to proceed or provide a link? If it's not possible can someone point me to the right tool for the job?

How to best manage both http and https pages on the same apache-server without conflicts. For example, if i have both 000-default.conf and 000-default-ssl.conf pointing to mydomain.com, and don't want users who visit mydomain.com without specifically type the https-prefix to be redirected to the https-page - how to handle users using browserplugins such as https-everywhere etc?
Another option would be to create a subdomain ssl.mudomain.com and have users who want to reach the ssl site to have to type ssl. I have tested several things with https everywhere enabled in my own browser, and it seems really hard to make this working the way i want, in one way or another i always end up getting redirected to the ssl-site automatically.
The reason i need this to work is because i run one site that i don't care much about SSL, that is the "official" part of that site, and i also host some things for friends and family on the SSL-part. This would not have been a problem if it wasn't that i use self-signed certificates for my ssl-site and the major user become afraid when a certificate-warning pops up in their browser and therefor leave the site.

I installed Nagios on my Ubuntu 10.04 server using apt-get and when I accessed the web console, everything was OK. I made some changes to apache (creating some new virtual sites) and since then Nagios gives me a warning message for HTTP with the message, HTTP WARNING: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found. The sites that I created are working perfectly. I noticed that the attemps are 4/4. Does this need to be reset or does Nagios automatically reset that once it detects the issue is resolved?

View 3 Replies View RelatedBanning the IP is the best way to protect your server but of course, attacker can use another IP and use a lot of your bandwidth until you find and ban the IP. So the only thing we can do to prevent this is, block the packets my iptables length module.
I check the bandwidth usage through "iftop". Incoming traffic is always like 120kb/second and that has to be that way because the traffic enters my server no doubt that it gets dropped by iptables later.
The actual thing what the Ddos ( UDP Flood ) does it that it causes an outbound traffic that eats up like 5mb/second easily and my servers lag. Only if the IP is banned, the outbound traffic comes to an end.
Now I want to use the length module to block it but it just won't work. I've tried the following and shuffled them too but no help.

I am trying to set up a DMZ host - that is, one multifunctional PC between the WAN and the LAN. I've started with a basic router, and expanding upon that as the need arises. I am currently trying to gain access (from the WAN) to a website hosted on one of the servers in the LAN, but I am having trouble accessing the host from the WAN; I think my iptables configuration may be too restrictive. On the DMZ host, I'm using Debian (Etch). I have setup dhcp3-server, a script to configure iptables and pound (reverse-proxy). The (virtual) machine has 4 network cards: eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3; eth0 is the WAN, eth1 through eth3 serve 3 different virtual LANs.
All machines in the LAN (except one windows 2008 server - I might want to address that problem later) get their IP adresses correctly via dhcp from the DMZ host. All machines on the LAN can access the internet (including the 2008 server if I configure it manually) as they should. If I access http://localhost on the DMZ host, pound reports "The service is not available. Please try again later." - as it should.
I can ping the DMZ host from the WAN on 10.0.0.79 However, if I try to access the DMZ host from the WAN (http://10.0.0.79) I get "Unable to connect" from firefox. I'm sure this is not a pound problem, so I think it's in the iptables, or maybe I should be installing some extra software that I'm unaware of.
