I wanted to change the resolution of the splash screen because it looked too big for the screen's area. I installed Start-up Manager, which I don't like any more because of this issue, and changed the resolution. The result was a garbled screen and so I reset to the original settings and re-booted. Now I have another garbled screen with 2 side-by-side very fuzzy/unreadable "Ubuntu" images.

I've tried to change the screen by editing the grub menu list as told in some forum topics but it makes no change. How do I change my splash screen back to that of ubuntu or ant other image.

But once i reinstalled at lucid (my computer's HDD fried and it was under warranty), I didn't even get the standard ubuntu splash. View 10 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS onto a blank hard drive with the prospective goal of running WoW on it. I installed Wine and all my security updates and restarted; everything worked fine, but I noticed that the system was suggesting that I get some "proprietary" drivers for my HD Radeon 4550 card. I proceeded to install them and was told that the the OS needed to restart to make the changes. I clicked the close button, restarted from the menu in the top-right hand corner, and when my machine started back up -bam!- frozen on the ubuntu splash screen.
I'm reinstalling now (after trying everything I could think of) and I just want to know how the hell this happened, and how I can avoid it in the future. I'm trying to make the switch from Linux to Windows, but this isn't making it any easier. Also: is there any way I can set up ubuntu to look and interface like a windows clone.
System was running 9.10 just fine.

bad idea to mess w/ a working system.
Anyway my system won't go past the "ubuntu" splash screen with the five dots. The dots just keep scrolling from white to red over and over.
I can ssh into the box.
Top shows "plymouthd" is running, about 5% CPU and stuck.
If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Sometimes ill get random command lines mixed in with the usual splash, sometimes the splash wont show and it will just be black till the desktop appears, sometimes it flashes on and off. I originally tried fixing the resolution and just made the problem worse. Then I tried installing a new splash via gnome-look.org, but it just made my shut-down splash blank and didnt effect my splash at startup. I just want the original splash that ubuntu is supposed to have.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?
I recently installed Ubuntu Studio and after an update the standard Plymouth splash screen began to show. I tried changing it back via the "sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth" method but I am getting a blue kbuntu splash screen instead of the ubuntu studio splash.

This is an issue for two reasons: first is the fact that system performance is drastically compromised while ubuntuone-syncdaemon starts since it is accessing the disk as much as it absolutely can, which means that other programs also take forever to launch; second, when it finally does start, I am prompted to unlock the keyring, which interrupts whatever I am doing in a fairly annoying fashion and prevents the screen from locking properly if the computer is suspended.
While ubuntuone-syncdaemon is taking its merry time to launch, the status of the process is "uninterruptable," and an entire processing core is used at 100% with IOwait, as it is furiously accessing the hard drive.Is their any way I can get u1 back to original, unobtrusive self? Could this be indicative of a hard drive issue.
I am using the latest UBUNTU 9.10. It was working great. I logged in as Tom, put in my password and could do what I needed to do. Now when I go to the CLI through the terminal I get "Tom@new-host-2:~$ " which has no privileges. I obviously messed up something. I can't find a way to get back to my original prompt when I access the terminal.

I found it quite useful from USB and eventually installed it on my Gateway netbook, that's where my nightmare started. At installation option gave me to ubuntu side by side with my Windows Vista on the netbook. It used part of hard drive space to create a separate partition for ubuntu. Intallation is OK but display is very bad particular moving the mouse around Firefox. Screen turned white back ground right with messy character font. It tried move around and have to restart ubuntu to get out.
I thought it might be something display drive not setup but found no option to make change from within Ubuntu. I had frustrated to search for fixing option and decide to "remove" ubuntu from the netbook. The worst, there is no option whatsoever on how to remove it. I search this forum and script to delete the partition from terminal. When it restart, the MBR or Grun loaded with errors incorrect file system. That mean the MBR not load and it is a netbook. It does not come with Vista CD for me to fix MBR nor resize the partition. I had to re-install ubuntu again back to square one to use it size by size with Windows.
Any one have a clean and details steps on how to remove ubuntu, resize partition and able to bring the netbook back to Windows only?
I have upgraded to 10.10 and I want to go back to the font used in 10.04. What was the name of the font in Lucid? Moreover, how do I make Google Chrome adopt this change? It is currently rendering all the web-pages with the Ubuntu font and I want whatever 10.04 was using. If I change the font in the Appearance -> Fonts panel, Google Chrome does not update.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh install from 8.04 to 10.04 with separate "/" and /home partitions. I really wanted a new 10.04 system to start from scratch and rebuild it again & differently. Instead I got a really messed up system. Is there any way to change it to a fresh new 10.04 install. That nothing has been added to yet?
This is very important because on 10.04 my video card won't handle all the mods that I had on 8.04 and my system freezes very soon after I log on.
When I first installed openSUSE 11.4 the /boot directory looked like this:
I had installed VirtualBox through Yast and decoded to delete. After deleting the /boot directory looked like this, pointing now to the desktop kernel.
I went into YAST and deleted all kernel entries that contained desktop, trying to get back to the original configuration.
After doing this, the /boot directory now looks like this.
Is there any way to get back to the original kernel configuration without having to do a complete installation?
I am using Ubuntu 9.10, I removed the task bar at the bottom of the screen and replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I click on Fire Fox and by default Fire Fox would drop to the bottom of the screen, now it just disappears. Is there any way of putting back the original settings.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSeems that i have totally ****ed up my sony vaio (vgn-fz21z). I've been doing some partitioning and formatting without really knowing what i was doing. Now it is a mess.The vaio comes with pre-installed windows vista, which is no longer installed. I want it to be.Ubuntu 10.4 is installed. In grub I can choose vista but that is only vaio recovery tool. Which is not working. When I try the format cption and take it all back to the original settings, it says that c: is too small or missing.
I also have some cd:s with windows 7 and xp on, but they can't be read. Now the vaio is not even accepting my ubuntu live-cd. I have nothing of importance on the computer, so there would be no problem re-formatting the whole thing. Can it be done? I would prefer is the vaio recovery tool could be left untouched, it has its own partition. I guess I'm asking: is there a way from inside ubuntu to make a total system re-installation, get rid of different partitions and reconstruct c:, so win can be installed again?
I had installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a W7 OS, as a dual boot. I have removed Ubuntu, and now have that space as "free space". Between the original partition (c:) and the free space, there is a partition that contains the laptop mfg's factory image. I want to recover that free space back to the original c: partition. I was reading about GParted, but do not want to attempt anything until I have some expert advice.

Ubuntu ultimate edition gamers (based on ubuntu 10.10 I believe).
I've only recently installed the gamers edition as a dual boot to see what it looks like. Now I've had a play around with it I've realised that I don;t really like it.What's the quickest/easiest way of reverting back to my original ubuntu 10.10 as a single boot? I don't want to re-install 10.10 - I was hoping I could delete the gamers edition to get back to my original single boot 10.10.
I'm running Kubuntu, but after trying an Ubuntu tool to help configure Grub, my boot up plash screen (xsplash? My card isn't KMS compliant, so I'm not using Plymouth) now shows the Ubuntu splash.

I do not understand, do I have an Intel video card, or an Nvidia video card? Should I install the Nvidia video card driver, because every time I try, everything gets real glitchy and I revert back to my original setup.

As you can see, it's a scrambled picture of my Windows desktop. This happens with every other version of Ubuntu also.
I'm running a 64-bit PC and I don't wanna waste another CD or use a USB to install, because I actually progress further in my efforts whenever I use Wubi.
I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.
Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?
Out of nowhere Ubuntu (intrepid, I believe) has stopped loading for me. When it attempts to load gdm the screen starts flashing at the splash screen and then eventually dumps me to the terminal. From there I can login without any problems but can not get the GUI to load.
When I run sudo gdm-binary it does the flashing splash screen again and then spits out the error message: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found. Then a few warnings about longest graphic displayed 2.5xxx seconds
I tried running sudo dpkg-recondifigure gdm and relaunch gdm as above and it did the same thing.
I was not able to successfully connect to my wireless network through the terminal to try to update in the hopes of that fixing the problem. Perhaps someone can give me instructions on how? (I have tried but can not figure out how to initialize wlan0).
Or, is there something I can do from my installation CD?
I have been running 10.04 quite successfully, when I upgraded to 10.10, I have a problem with the newer kernels. If I let it boot into the latest one 2.6.35-23, I get the Ubuntu 10.10 splash screen for a second then a blank screen, same with 2.6.35-22. I have to run with 32-25 to get it to load the gui.
I have an AMD Sempron 2800, 1.6GHz pc, but I'm not sure if it's running 64bit.
I get the new boot splash with the nice little rocket and all but I seriously dislike it. While I don't stare at my computer as it boots, I do happen to see it from time to time. Unfortunately, I always see this new little rocket and I wonder where my traditional Debian blue with the swirl went. Yes, I know I am using Grub-Pc now, and I have tried to edit my /etc/grub.d file by renaming the wallpaper line to my preference.
But all my config file sees is "background-grub.png" which is the little rocket ship. So, I give. What is the secret code to unlock my grub config file or do I seriously have to muck around with Plymouth in order to have a choice in the matter? Just for those of you who contemplate counseling me on better time management instead of wasting my precious time over such a silly little thing, I agree. Not to mention that I use Debian because I like to build my system.
i upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04 today .but after upgrading so many errors crept in .

1. Original login screen of ubuntu 9.10 is not being displayed.
2.By mistake i removed volume control and network connection applet from upper pannel.so can any one tell me how to re organise the pannel...and get back those two applets or can any one tell me how to completely recover the upper pannel.
