Nov 21, 2010I have been trying to install Squeeze from the 6.0.1a KDE CD-1 plus the Debian repos. I just cannot get X to work. I get similar bad results to those mentioned by other users having similar problems, but none of the suggested fixes works.
Basic hardware information:
Desktop PC, whole 40 GB disk used for install
Graphics card: none Video controller on motherboard: VIA Technologies S3 UniChrome VGA controller (about 8 years old)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 1280 x 1024 (about 8 years old)
Some things I've already tried: in rescue mode, as root, in /etc/X11X -configuremove file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf basically everything mentioned in threads in past two months regarding users who cannot get X to work reinstalling 100x with every choice for the installer I can think of
What happens: when doing the install, contrary to expectation, I am never prompted for any of the hardware information which the documentation at debian.org says I should have on hand (is that a good sign or a bad sign?)
No matter how I try to do the install,I always seem to get a nongraphical installation, so I try this: as root:apt-get install xorg in /etc/X11X -configthen move generated file (which looks like X didn't try to create an actual configuration file) to /etc/X11/xorg.config as non-root user:startx I get black screen (or a tiny tiny konsole at upper left) and system hangs
How can I tell whether this an X misconfiguration? How can I fix it? How can I tell whether I simply need a driver? Where do I look? How can I tell whether my hardware is simply incompatible with Squeeze? What do I need to replace? Do I need to get a new monitor in order to use Squeeze? Do I need to buy a new motherboard with newer video controller? Do I need to buy a graphics card? Which?

Sep 24, 2010I have a problem with my slackware 13. before i configure my mouse synaptic, i can use my slackware in my laptop. but after i configure my synaptic. and then i reboot. i can't see my kde again. my laptop proses only at Starting gpm: /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/mouse -t imps2 Starting up X11 session manager... and my laptop like hang. this is my configuration in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.

Slackware :: Configure System To Start Wlan0 Instead Of Eth0?
Nov 29, 2010I'm running Slackware-13.1 on my laptop. Connection to my network is via wlan0, a cable in most cases not pluged in.When starting the system the first attempt to configure the network is via eth0, which ends with dhcpcd timing out since there is no cable pluged in. Afterwards wlan0 is set up properly.
I have installed ifplugd, which is a daemon who connects to ethernet only if a cable is connected. With Gentoo this works out of the box. With Slackware ifplugd is started after rc.inet1 (probably). So the the system still tries to connect via ethernet before connecting to the wireless network.
I have also installed wicd.How can I manage that wlan0 is prefered over eth0?I noticed that neither wicd nor ifplugd belong to the default full installation of Slackware and therefore assume, there must be a solution which meets my requirements without even one of both programs.The laptop is only used at home. Wireless connection is normaly used. I need eth0 only in a case of emergency.

The bridge will come up if I restart the network service after boot....but it won't automatically come up when the computer starts.

1. autologin
2. start fvwm after login instead of default DM - gnome
3. run application
how to autologin in fedora but it still shows that fedora gui login screen for 10 seconds and then it logs in. My problem that I dont know how to start fvwm and configure it to empty desktop (no toolbars no nothing) instead of gnome.

Feb 8, 2010kpilot worked just fine with my Palm Tungsten T3 on OpenSuse 10.3. I recently upgraded to 11.2 and have had numerous problems. It took me a while to get the hardware talking (documented in another thread), but now the sync is proving to be problematic. A hotsync happens - and I can also sync fully with jpilot, but the sync isn't going anywhere. I'm hoping to sync with kontact, but it's impossible to tell as kpilot hangs whenever I try to configure the conduits through the "Configure kpilot" menu item. When syncing, the log complains of missing conduits:

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Slow - Start Up Time Is 30 Minutes But It Usually Doesn't Start Up At All
May 4, 2011I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.

Jan 19, 2010I'm trying to find how to schedule a process to start at a specific time (not on start up). How would I schedule a process/application to start at a specific time (if it matters, it will be a background process). For instance, have process abc start every weekday at 5am. I've done this for windows many times though have only been using linux regularly for a few months and haven't figured out the best way of doing this.
So far the best solution I have is to create a program that will start on boot and have it check the time and sleep until the required time and then start the required process(es) at the required time(s). But this seems more of a hack since I'd expect there to be a proper way of doing this.

Jun 7, 2010I have setup a CentOS 5.5 server as a DHCP server. That will be it's only task in a Cisco callmanger VoIP environment The DHCP server that comes with CentOS 5.5 is from ISC V3.0.5 -redhat.
The server (HP DL360) has two physical NIC's of which only NIC1 is used (ETH0)

Software :: Samba Refuses To Start On Startup - But Will Start Manually
Apr 14, 2009I just moved my / from sda1 to an ide drive, hde1. i dont see how this could have caused any of these issues, but it did.
First my network card failed to start. i added a line in my rc.local file (where i put all of my additional programs, etc i want to start):/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
The above now starts my network card with my static ip configured. dhcpcd also worked but i wanted this static.
Now samba will not start. i have the following line in my rc.local: /etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start
This used to work just fine. at first i thought that samba may be trying to start before my network card gets an ip, but the line is *after* the network startup line. just to make sure, i made an additional script called startsamba which contained a sleep 60 followed by samba start, to delay the startup of samba even further.
The message samba reports is very vague, something like failed - core dumped. most of the core dump log is garbage characters, but here is the beginning which seems like it might contain some info:

ERROR: Can't log to stdout (-S) unless daemon is in foreground (-F) or interactive (-i) after the system starts, i can drop to a console and type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start" and the service starts just fine. i've also tried starting samba manually with "smbd -d" which also produces the core dump when started from rc.local, but not when started from a console after startup.

Sep 2, 2010I'm configuring a new Centos 5.5 server in replacement of an old W2K server.The topology of our network is simple : one file/dhcp/dns relay server and workstations (PC's and some MAC's) plus network printers and scanners.All the workstations have dynamic IP addresses (easier because a lot of 'dynamic' changes : new persons with their own laptop, ...) and the server and printers/scanners have fixed IP addresses.I edited the dhcpd.conf (see here underneath), I have the file dhcpd.leases but it doesn't start !
