I have searched in the internet and found the closest tool is PartImage. But the bad news is that it does not support ext4 fs!
Custdistro means it will backup your all/thing without/home and customback means it will backup all thing in /. It can create an ISO if your backup is less then 4 GB. Well, i've made a lot of changes to ubuntu 10.04 and now i love it! It does everything i'll want from any computer. This took me a lot of time, follow several tutorials and destroy the entire system a couple of times. The last one is a BIG problem because restoring my system to the state before i ****** all up takes some time again.Do any of you guys know how to backup all my system settings, programs and files? So that if i corrupt my system again i can restore it to be exactly as my current state?

I am looking for something that would BackUp my entire hard drive to a CD/DVD (preferably bootable) --so-- if I crash -or- want to clone to another hard drive I would have the ability to a 'Restore' of the CD/DVD and simply be able to load the CD/DVD to an old / new hard drive and be back-in-business without a lot of hassle.

Clonezilla makes an image file....but how do you get the image onto multiple DVD's? When burning the image file does K3B allow you to "change the full DVD" and add another disk?
In other words- any harddrive I have (already filled with 79 Gb) is going to make an image bigger than something that can fit onto a DVD.
Basically, I want to write to the DVD, much like tar would write to a tape. Backup to tape example:

I have read that i can backup the entire system with the home folder with commands, or with programs, such as clonezilla, but it doesnt work, so im trying to back it up with commands now but i cant find a good tutorial to explain what commands to use.

I'm already good as far as setting up backups of my data - but redoing all of my settings and software would be a nightmare in the event of a HD failure.
So what I'm looking for is a command line utility to do an image of the main 200gb drive to an external usb drive. The software needs to function similar to the Windows Vista/7 System Image utility or DriveImage XML and be able to make the images without shutting down. I tried several ways but could not solve the problem. I want to load Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 though so I can do perl development. BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? I am trying to install Gentoo. Currently I have windows 7 on my primary Hard Drive.I decided to add in a second HDD that I got for free and use linux on that.I got through my entire install and at the end I accidently wrote grub to my second hard drive.When I rebooted it went straight to windows.So I have some questions. When installing to the secondary HDD does my boot partition and swap need to be on sda? or can they reside on sdb?Also I tried to re-issue the grub-install command and it said bash: command not found. How can I get grub to re-install? I tried to emerge it and same issue no command found.Do I need to redo the entire reinstall?My last question is If I have more then enough HDD space how much is too much for linux? Most people say 30 GB is all you need from what I have read but I assume 160 GB is going to go to waste?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI run alot of Linux running in memory. Mainly by PXE booting a kernel and the entire OS as the "initrd" file.
I have a RHEL6 image running as a VirtualBox guest and the entire OS (minimal) is contained withing 1GB of disk. I wan't to boot the entire /dev/sda1 "/" (its the only partition on the drive, no swap) as the initrd file and run everything from memory. But grub won't let me. So before I try and re-invent the wheel I thought to post here first.
Details. RHEL 6 as guest in VIrtual BOX. configured with 3Gb memory. HD is single partition and known as /dev/sda1.
at the grub console. I issue
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-19.el6.x86_64 root=/dev/ram0
initrd (hd0,0)
But the grub windows just freezes. Apparently it doesn't like the fact that I've referenced the entire partition (hd0,0) as the initrd. Any thoughts? Or any better boot loader like SYSLINUX?
BTW, I am not worried about the /etc/fstab mentioning /dev/sda1 at this point, I have a fix for that already. I would like to see grub load up the partition as an initrd.
My Ubuntu 9.10 is intalled on a partition on my computer HDD. The other partition OS is Windows XP. My Windows uses McAfee as the antiviral program. Granted that linux is at a much less risk for viruses, some still apparently can slide through on incoming emails from Windows computers.
1) Will my Windows partition McAfee protect the entire computer?
2) If not, suggestions for an anti-viral program?
I need a FREE solution that can image an entire Luks system encrypted volume and the rest of the used HDD, the MBR and /boot partition. Note: MBR and /boot are not encrypted. Note 2: I want to be able to restore entire drive from image with only a couple of steps. Note 3: Destination HDD space is a factor. Image file must be compressed and the image file must be around 40 to 50 GB or less. The smaller the image the better.
I have used clonezilla live cd before but not for encrypted volumes. I know you can install it in Linux. But, I don't know how to configure it after installation. I would be very happy if someone could tell me how to configure clonezilla in Fedora. How to guides are also welcome. I have one more question. If I image the encrypted volumes and all the stuff I mentioned above while logged in to Fedora, and I restore the drive from the image, will the recovered drive still be encrypted?
I'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:

I have been able to create a directory using sudo but I have not succeeded in changing permissions so Bill can use it for backups.sudo chmod a+rw BackUp runs without errors but doesn't change permissions.sudo chmod +666 Backup just brings up the see man message

I was wondering if there would be a possible way to backup my 10.04 install and move it to an existing, unused ext3 partition. I'm kinda stuck at the moment with my disk error problem, and figured I could waste some time to see if I could MOVE my install (as to not have to do a fresh install, re-install every application and script, and re-customizeand and move all of my media and files) onto an ext3 and completely remove the ext4.

I know how to backup and run an update already. this works charms for backup and restore even over a remote shell.. i have even been able to remotely repair my system from vacation. now comes the problem: the partition has developed some I/O errors. Windows has notices and just marked some sectors as being broken/bad. But dd being Filesystem independent doesnt know and aborts when trying to read and getting an HArdware IO error.
my question: how can i fix this so i can still backup AND restore the partition? i cant afford a new HD at the time.
I have two desktop machines, each with U 10.10. I want to backup data on my main machine to a partition on the other machine. I am going to use luckybackup for that. Problem is, from the main machine, I cannot access the backup partition on the other machine (but I can see it). I get prompts for passwords and when I enter them nothing happens, it seems they're not valid. Bottom line, I can't access that partition.

I've created the eRecovery discs but those will only restore XP - not the actual recovery partition (which I'd like to have in case I sell the laptop later etc).
How can I backup the actual recovery partition, and keep its boot file intact. Then how can I restore this partition at a later time?
