Ubuntu :: How To Assign More Than One Keyboard Shorcut

Jul 22, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on my Lenovo laptop. Sometimes I use USB KB which doesn't have the Multimedia keys. It would be great if I will be able to control my Volume etc using some Keyboard shortcut. I know that this can be done using Preferences->keyboard Shortcut. But the problem is it "replaces" old key (e.g. dedicated volume key on laptop ) with new one which I don't want to happen. I want to keep both keys for same operation.

Ubuntu :: Assign New Keyboard Shortcut Combination

Jul 10, 2011

I would like to know if it is possible to assign new keyboard shortcut combinations for actions such as:

Action: switch tabs
Actual Shortcut: Control+(Alt)pgUp/pgDown
New Shortcut: Control+Tab (as it is on Windows)
Action: activate combo boxes item lists
Actual Shortcut: Alt+Down or F4
New Shortcut: still don't know yet

I have not found a way of doing this under gnome-keyboard-properties or gconf-editor.

Software :: Assign Pc Keyboard Keys To Play Sounds?

May 9, 2011

is there a nice clean simple lightweight way to assign pc keyboard keys sounds?anyone know a simple lightweight way to assign sounds to keys in linux?like so your keyboard can be played like an instrument...i'd rather not do it through thewindow manager'sconfigurations, assigning single key shortcuts to audio samples, since i dont want it on all the time, and having two wm configs to toggle between could just get messy, and limits it to that wm, until you build it all from scratch again for another wm.or even if there isnt a simple lightweight way... what audio/midi software lets you assign samples/notes/etc to keys.(i tried searching for quite a while, but it was obvious i was struggling to find the terms that werent so genereic and with multiple meanings, that just get all the wrong kinds of things)

Ubuntu :: New Shorcut For Document Viewer?

Oct 28, 2010

I'm using my laptop to read an ebook, and as I have no table where I read, i just rotate the screen to the right and hold the laptop as I was holding a book.. the problem I have now is the scrolling. So I have a couple Ideas, but I haven't found how to implement them, maybe someone knows how to do it, and could point me to the right direction.

1.- Use the webcam. Is there any way to use my left thumb to control the scrolling trough some kind of gestures in the webcam. 2.- Create a shortcut. I tried to create a new shortcut and assign it to the bluetooth key of my laptop, but I couldn't find any "command" that means scroll down

Fedora :: Launch A Bash Script (game) With A Shorcut?

Jun 11, 2010

I just downloaded a game Cube 2: Sauerbraten and I am trying to make a shortcut in Application->Games.

Basically to launch a game I have to double-click on a file, which is a script that invokes the rest of the game. After double clicking a dialog shows up that asks me whether I want to edit the file, run in terminal, or just run. I have no problem running it this way, but my shortcut in Applications->Games does not work. I have tried setting shortcut option to "Application" and "Application in Terminal" and nothing happens.

As of now the shortcut command points directly to that start script. I have also tried to do "sh /path/to/game" and still no success. How do I make that shortcut work?

Ubuntu :: No Keyboard At Grub First Boot - Keyboard After Restart?

Jun 27, 2011

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).

When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.

Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)

Ubuntu :: Possible To 'assign' Program To Core?

Jul 26, 2010

Obviously I don't know that much about CPU architecture. I have a fancy new quad core CPU in the machine I just built. Now, given the current state of technology, two or many times three of those cores are pretty much sitting idle.My question is: Is there any way to utilize those extra cores with programs not optimized to take advantage of them? If I have some CPU intensive application, is there any way to tell it to utilize a core that's idling instead of the first core that's probably already got a bunch of processes running on it?

Ubuntu Servers :: Assign Static IP Or DNS Name?

Nov 27, 2010

I have installed a ssh server on a computer (Ubuntu 10.04). This computer will be reboot many times, so the IP address is going to change. As a result, I couldn't connect with an other computer on this server via ssh. That's why I search a solution: either I assign a static IP on my server computer or I heard that I could use a dns name. I don't know if the latter solution is good so I hope to have some precisions. Also, I tried to have a static IP by editing the file : /etc/network/interfaces but it doesn't work.

I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.

Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.

I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.

Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

Ubuntu :: Manually Assign A Data Partition?

I have a hdd of about 225gb when i installed ubuntu it gave a nice split down the middle on the partition and a 3gb swap. I tried to manually assign a data partition but was unsuccessful; kept getting a root error and couldn't fix it so i let it do it automatically.

Now win7 has a 60gb partition and the rest is on ubuntu side.

How can i give win7 more room? qparted for linux side or partition magic on win side?

Which will be easier for me?

My goal was to give win7 around 80gb and ubuntu about the same or less and make a third partion and name it "Data". Data will be storage for both os's or whatever.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Assign Labels With Ip / Ifconfig

Oct 19, 2010

I am trying to manually set up a number of static IPv6 addresses to one of the physical network interfaces on my 8.04server box.

I tried to use the "ip" utility like that:/ip addr add [myIPv6addr] dev eth0 label eth0:0

which was accepted by ip (no errors) and the IP address was correctly assigned to eth0. But using "ip addr show" I do not see any reference to the label I defined and "ip addr show dev eth0 label eth0:0" does not come back with anything (empty output).

This seems to contradict the information I found on the ip manpage and I wonder if this is a bug or a misconfiguration on my side. Did anyone successfully used the label functionality with ip?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Assign Super Key To Shortcuts?

I dismayed to find that Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 no longer allows a user to assign the Super key (Windows key/Mod4 key) to keyboard shortcuts.

There seem to have been a number of unfavourable changes to UNR 10.10, but this is the worst. Super key functioning is essential for launching applications for many users.

I am no longer able to use UNR and I must uninstall it today. I think this is a shame, because I have always wanted to support it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Assign Specific Static Ip

May 25, 2011

Using Ubuntu Server maverick here - after altering /etc/network/interfaces to use a static ip and checking /etc/resolv.conf (no alteration needed) no network services were working at all. Here are the contents of interfaces:

Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.0
gateway 192.168.1.254

I was fairly certain that this was verbatim from my previous server which is no longer attached to the network. After hours of fooling around with no success I changed the address to 192.168.1.99 and it worked perfectly. So my question is: why? My old server used 100. Could the router refuse to give a new server the same address or something like that since that address had been taken in the past?
