View 1 RepliesTo be honest, I am trying to install Linux Mint, but since this is based on Ubuntu, and I am comfortable with Ubuntu on my VM I decided to label it Ubuntu.
I have a 235 HDD and it is partitioned like this:
C: 150 GB (Windows) NTFS
D: 70 GB (Data) NTFS
G: 15 GB (for my not yet installed Linux) NTFS
I also followed this tutorial and now I have some sort of LiveCD inside my USB: [URL]. So, now I have a pen drive with an Ubuntu LiveCD and a 15GB ready for my Ubuntu!
This is what I do:
1 - connect pen to computer
2 - turn on computer
3 - pen start running and I load Linux like a LiveCD (yey!)
4 - Linux loads and I wait
5 - I click "Install linux"
6 - I configure the language, time zone and keyboard with no problems
7 - Disk partitioning ... it offers me 2 choices:
7.1 - Erase entire disk and install Ubuntu
7.2 - Manually partitioning: but drive C:, D: and G: do not appear!!!
I want to install my Linux on driver G:, but I don't find a "Install Linux in this specific partition" option!
I have problem with copying dvd in k3b. When I choose "copy medium" option, there is only cd medium to insert when k3b creates image. When I insert dvd medium, k3b doesn't want to burn?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to install any version of Debian with the Debian Kernel version 2.6.22-3-686. I don't mind what version of Debian it is, I just need it to have this specific kernel! Debian Etch comes with 2.6.18-4-686 and Lenny comes with 2.6.26-2-686 so the kernel I need is obviously somewhere in between.
I have tried using the following commands to see if kernel 2.6.22-3-686 is available for download via the apt-get method in both Debian Etch and Lenny but it is not...
apt-cache search linux-kernel
apt-cache search linux-source
So does anyone know where/how I can download specific kernels and install them for use? I have a computer sitting next to me that has multiple kernels as an option on boot, and they all boot into the same system, however I do not know the person who set up the computer so cannot ask them how they did it

It doesn't work, and it could be source of error to write the path .metadata/.plugins manually. It certainly a better idea to create a complete script ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhat would be the best way to automatically copy all of the data off of a library of cds to a specific folder on the computer? I was thinking of running a bash script but I've run into a few snags figuring out the correct way to do it. Mainly due to the fact that the cd drive is mounted in a different folder in /media each time I insert a new diskAlso, the mounting and unmounting process causes it's own problems, but I think that could be covered by a for loop that checks /mtab every few seconds or so.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA function by name abc is called in many files. I want to copy all the lines with the function call to an output file.A simple grep on function name doesn't help me as the function call is spanning across multiple lines as follows:
abc(parameter1,

parameter3);
So I want to copy all the three lines (till semicolon) to the output file. The problem is because there are more than 200 calls for the same function and I cannot do it manually

Whenver i try to copy files from my centos to pendrive ( 2gb, kingston datatraveller) my system is gettin hanged leaving no option then to reboot. i tried from the terminal also, and as a diffrent user also. but same results. sometimes i can copy files of small size. but when i go above 5 mb..system hangs..

I have two files, file1.traj and file2.traj. Both these files contain identical data and the data are arranged in same format in them. The first line of both files is a comment.
At line 7843 of both files there is a cartesian coordinate X, Y and Z ( three digits ). And at line 15685 there is another three digits. The number of lines in between two cartesian coordinates are 7841. And there are few hundreds of thousands of lines in a file.
What I need to do is copy the X Y Z coordinate (three digits) from file1.traj at line 7843 and paste into file2.traj at the same line number as in file1.traj. The next line will be 15685 from file1.traj and replace at line 15685 at file2.traj. And I dont want other lines (data) in file2.traj get altered. This sequence shall be going on until the end of the file. Means copy and substitude the selected lines from file1.traj into file2.traj.
I tried to use paste command but I cant do for specified line alone.
Here i showed the data format in the file. I used the line number for clarity purpose.

View 5 Replies View Relatedmy system I want user1 and only user1 to be able to mount and unmount a specific partition, this partition contains backups and is usually mounted read only, needs to be temporarily mounted read/write by user1 while doing the backup.user1 is an unprivileged user. I've read that the user option will let any user mount the file-system (and only that user can then subsequently unmount it) and that the users option allows any user to mount or unmount the file-system.I also found this in mount's man pageQuote:The owner option is similar to the user option, with the restriction that the user must be the owner of the special file. This may be useful e.g. for /dev/fd if a login script makes the console user owner of this device. The group option is similar, with the restriction that the user must be member of the group of the special file.So it looks like I'd need a login script for that user to make the user owner of the device file (/dev/voiceserv/backup in this case)

I'm trying to configure our mail server to block email from a specific sender reaching a specific recipient. In other words, if one of our employees is getting harassed by a 'stalker', how would one go about blocking, at the MTA (Sendmail) level, a specific sender email address from reaching a particular users inbox? We do not want to capture the email - simply block it before it consumes server resources. The Sendmail server (MTA) is a front end to our Exchange server so no user accounts exist on the Linux server. We simply use it as a SPAM and Virus scanner then forward clean email to the Exchange server.

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow to copy a Read-Only file in Linux and make the copy writable with a single cp command in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.
I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.
I want to record an internet radio station starting at 2:00am tomorrow morning. The specific program on the radio station lasts until 6:00am. The command I need to run to record the station is: Code:mplayer http://wjcu.jcu.edu:8001/listen.pls -ao pcm:file=indie_heat_of_the_night.wav -vc dummy -vo nullI'd use cron, but 1. I'm not sure how to and 2. it seems unnecessarily complicated for something that I only want to run once. If cron is the only/easiest solution, I guess I'll just have to resort to that, but I'd rather not.
