Ubuntu :: Gwibber Vulnerable To Firesheep In An Unprotected Network?
Nov 2, 2010
I have been reading about this new Firefox extension that can grab Twitter account information of computers connected to unprotected networks. Info: url
I occasionally have to connect to public, unprotected, WiFi networks and use Twitter via Gwibber. So, here is my question: is Gwibber vulnerable to Firesheep in an unprotected network? Is there a way of protecting it from this attacks? (I know that using https stops Firesheep attacks to the web version of Gwibber, but i don't think if this method is possible or applicable to Gwibber)

I used to use Gwibber as social networks aggregator/client, but starting since last update (current version 3.1.0) it crashes miserably on both Fedora 14 and Fedora 15.
Gwibber team looks reluctant to provide any feedback on whether this shall be fixed in foreseeable future. Installing Gwibber from the last stable sources gives the same crash.

After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?

Quote: It's no secret that Web sessions that use the bare HTTP protocol to transmit and receive data are susceptible to a variety of security attacks. What's less clear is how much information is floating out there in the ether, especially with the rise of "Web 2.0" and rich social networking applications and other Web based sharing tools.
But now a pair of researchers have created a tool to identify and capture the social networking sessions of those around you. The tool, a Firefox browser extension dubbed "Firesheep," was demonstrated at the ToorCon Hacking Conference in San Diego on Sunday. Its primary purpose is to underscore the lack of effective transaction security for many popular social networking applications, including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and iGoogle: allowing users to browse public wifi networks for active social networking sessions using those services, then take them over using a built-in "one-click" session hijacking feature. Firesheep works on unencrypted wireless LAN connections with services that do not use secure HTTP.

My laptop is beginning to show its age so it may be time for a new PC soon, and most likely it'll come with Windows 7 preloaded. I currently run a dual boot with Lucid and Windows XP, and although I hardly use XP anymore I would repeat this configuration on the new PC. So now I'm wondering if Windows 7 is any less vulnerable to viruses and malware than its earlier predecessors because I don't plan to renew any virus checking software that may come with it.

I installed lampserver and took measures to see that apache would only serve 127.0.0.1 (Which appears to be a software switch as ipconfig says it's port is still "Open")
Mysql however, could be vulnerable: Do I need to secure it or does it only serve localhost? If so, how do I secure it?

I've heard of attacks using PDF files on Windows with Adobe Acrobat and Foxit Reader. Is Linux vulnerable to these attacks when using the default PDF viewers in KDE or Gnome or even xpdf? What is a good PDF scanner to determine if a PDF file is evil?

Is Linux vulnerable to Java drive-by exploits? Another computer I run on windows 7 just notified me that it was infected through Java, and I'm wondering if my Linux box (ubuntu 10) with Java installed is vulnerable.

In the wake of all of the stories about the Windows DLL hijacking bug, it appears that certain Linux distributions may be vulnerable to a similar problem related to the way that Linux handles a specific variable in some cases. The bug apparently was introduced via a Debian patch last year. The discussion on the possible bug in Linux began with a blog post by Tim Brown, a UK-based security researcher, who detailed a specific case in which Linux could be vulnerable to an attack similar to those designed to exploit the Windows DLL bug. The post spawned a related discussion on the Full-Disclosure mailing list, in which several others confirmed that they'd seen the problematic behavior in certain Linux distributions, including Fedora, Ubuntu and Debian.

I'd like to set up a fileserver for myself and a few trusted individuals. I'm computer savvy and I use various linux servers frequently for work, but this is my first time trying to setup my own. Is it possible to have a Samba server setup so it is both secure and facing the Internet? Two questions:
Will opening Samba ports make my default Ubuntu server particularly vulnerable to penetration? More than having an SSH server running? Does Samba/ can Samba be configured to encrypt traffic or is it sent plainly? If so, does Windows and Mac support this secure communication?
If not, what would you suggest? I'd like to achieve something like a network drive and at a difficulty level that my parents could use this if they really wanted to. I will be storing things like financial information and tax returns, but no weapons-grade secrets.

I used Avast webfilter (proxied webtraffic through Avast) when running Windows. Sometimes Avast would alert and "protect" me from being infected by a compromised website. NOTE: Avast would alert even absent clicking any links. Just viewing the page could result in infection. Should I be running some kind of proxy webfilter for protection? My understanding is that Firefox can be compromised and this can in turn compromise Ubuntu. Are these kinds of threats specific to Windows running Firefox, or Firefox per se. If Firefox per se it seems like I need some sort of Proxy webfiltering like Avast provides.

I'm just curious as to what security measure's I should be taking to make my box a little less vulnerable? I'm still experimenting/playing with Linux, use the net, IM, download this and that and was wondering how secure fedora 10 was out of the box?

I am having a problem getting my facebook account to add to gwibber. I have searched the forum for the last couple of days and found several others with an identical problem but to date no solution is offered other than keep trying.I have run gwibber in terminal and attempted to add the account. Below is the output. For information I am trying to add an existing account not create a new account.

Lucid is adamn good release and in my opinion, one of the best till date. If I have to rate Lucid on its OOB Factor (Out Of Box), I would rate it 9.7/10.I have an AMD based laptop with ATI graphics chipset and this used to be a major headache (ATI's fault ofcourse) previously and I was gearing up for another hour or so of installing the video drivers from ATI and getting it to work. But,suprisingly it just worked out of the box with visual effects enabled. Every component on my machine worked as it ought to be.
I cant say enough about the interface overhaul. Its like a F16 got upgraded with some slick Alien technology. Ubuntu 10.04 is surely a GOLD standard for all Linux Distros out there. Coming to this minor issue, I am unable to add the facebook account in Me Menu via gwibber. It takes the login credentials and prompts me to allow or deny publishing to facebook. Clicking on allow doesn't do anything, it just sits there.

I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and I've got to say that for me (been using Ubuntu since 9.04) that this has to be the best release yet, however one of the main added features doesn't successfully work for me? Unless I'm doing it wrong? So I'll list what I do just incase the problem is me.Firstly I access Gwibber (either from the Me Menu ( i think that's what it's called) and click broadcast account, or access it through the applications menu) then select Facebook from the drop down menu. I then click authorise and take all the steps needed to authorise Gwibber (logging in, accepting etc) and it says Facebook Authorised. I then click Add and it just highlights the box and doesn't actually do anything?
So I would like to know if I am doing something wrong while trying to authorise it and add the account, or if it just isn't working for me at the moment?

I have a problem with gwibber. It has emerged randomly for no apparent reason as I have not changed any settings. All of a sudden, when updating my status on Facebook, and I click send, gwibber appears to work for a while, and then just nothing happens. My status does not get updated. It works fine with Twitter. It's only facebook. I have checked my application settings in Facebook and gwibber has full permission to post.#
I tried setting up the account again in gwibber, but this just opened a can of worms, because I had to reinstall gwibber and delete all of the config files in order to reinstate my facebook account, (see URL...)due to a bug in gwibber, which was a pain.

For some odd reason, Gwibber won't open at all. The process is listed as "Sleeping", but every time I try and open the app, nothing happens. I tried re-installing it, and even deleting it via Synaptic and installing, but to no avail.
What do I do?

The text entry box that you can normally type a message into when you click on your name in the top right of the screen is missing. It's there on my laptop, and I set up a couple of broadcast accounts and then noticed it was missing on my desktop. I've uninstalled and reinstalled gwibber and it's still not there.
