Ubuntu :: GUIs For The Steg Binaries (steghide And Outguess) - What Image File Format Works In Login Screen Face Lists

Jul 25, 2010

Looks to me like we're a baby-step behind Windows in not having GUI wrappers or frontends for the steganography (?) binaries I mentioned above. Or have my searches just not turned up the obvious GNOME solution?

Also, can someone tell me exactly what image file format works in login screen face lists, in place of the "generic user" icon one? And is there a command-line workaround to get unique ones assigned per-user? The "Login Window" utility in Ubuntu 9.10 seems a bit insistent on using the same image and path to images for all user icons -- hardly a user-friendly way of making user A's identifying icon different from user B's.

Ubuntu Security :: Restore The Original Image File That Have Hidden Data In With Steghide

Jan 27, 2011

i'm wondering if it's possible to restore the original image file that you have hidden data in with steghide. The basic Idea is you have a photo using gpg sign it and then embed the signature. then remove the signature at a later time and check it with the signature. I hope another "inverse" algorithm doesn't need to be written to undo the first (if a "inverse algorithm is possible). This assume you already have the pass phrase or that there is no pass phrase. I already know how to retrieve the original file just want to remove the hidden data from the Image and restore it's attributes.

Ubuntu :: GDM Login/switch User Screen Blank - Autologin Works

Jan 5, 2011

I've run into a strange problem with GDM that I haven't managed to find a solution for yet, either by trying myself or googling, and I have run out of good ideas. I'll just infodump here about the problem and what I've tried etc;

I installed Ubuntu on a new PC a few weeks ago, setting it up with autologin for my mom and a separate user for myself, using the on/off-icon menu in the top-right corner to switch to my own user and back as needed, and logging the user out when done. This worked quite well.

However, a few days ago, this stopped working; logging out or trying to switch now leaves me with a blank black screen, without even a mouse pointer (but not off, the backlight is on).

EDIT: To clarify, this is an issue that only affects the GDM login screen, but that affects it whenever it is used, wether it is on boot (when not set to autologin), after logging out, or when trying to switch user.

At this point, I can usually use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a textmode login, and Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to the auto-logged in session (assuming I tried to switch, not logout).

I can't think of anything specific I did or installed around then that should be related in any way...

I tried disabling autologin and restarting gdm, which left me with the same black screen (which is still there after rebooting), instead of the expected login window. I managed to re-enable autologin by manually editing the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file, so that it would at least work for mom.

I've also tried to change which user is auto-logged in, thinking it might be a problem with my user account, but both users get an automatic session just fine when I restart gdm.

I thought it might be a problem with the video driver, but that's not the case - if I run zenity --info as root with DISPLAY set correctly, the dialog box appears on the screen just fine. It has no borders or titlebar (there's no windowmanager), and is apparently without keyboard focus, so since there's no visible mouse pointer I can't click the OK button... But since it appears, X is apparently up and running just fine, just has nothing to display other than a black background.

I tried purging and reinstalling gdm and gnome-session(-bin|-common), but that didn't help any.

Running ck-list-sessions after trying to switch indicates that there's a new session there, with session-type = 'LoginWindow', so it appears to think everything's fine.

Enabling debug output in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file did get me some more debug output in the gdm logs, but it didn't really tell me anything, there weren't any obvious problems that I could see.

After some looking around, I've guessed that it's supposed to be running gdm-simple-greeter, which I assume would display a login box; trying to run it manually doesn't work though (it's missing some environment variables, and trying to add them based on the abovementioned debug output doesn't really help).

Debian Multimedia :: Boot Hangs At Login Screen And Nothing Works

Mar 26, 2011

I'm running an LMDE install, but with the Sid repositories.Everything has been fine until yesterday's updates, after which I can't boot normally. The boot hangs at the login screen, and nothing works - not the mouse, the keyboard, the touchpad, nothing, and it requires holding the power switch to get out. I can boot to a root recovery console, but networking doesn't work at all there. I can run startx there and get an X desktop as root, and networking still doesn't work. No wireless, no ethernet, no nothing. From the recovery console I can run shutdown, and when prompted for a password, can enter Ctrl-D, which immediately drops me back to X, to the normal login screen, which now works normally, and I get a normal X session in which everything works. This is the same for all installed kernels, including 3 versions of the Liquorix kernel and the standard Squeeze kernel. It would appear to be something in my settings in /home, but I can't find anything that looks suspicious. I ran smxi again after booting through the root console, without any improvement.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gui Login Fails In 10.04 But TTY Login Works?

Jul 11, 2010

I installed 10.04 on my pc. I also have 9.08 and XP installed. Both work. The 10.04 gui login screen displays and asks for the password. I enter the password. The screen goes blank but after a few seconds the gui login box re appears and again asks for a login. I rebooted into the TTY, created a new user, checked the new user was in in /etc/passwd and that I could get into the new user's account. When I rebooted into the gui the new user was there and I entered the password but again I just got back to the gui login window. The pc I am using is at least 5 years old. I have tried startx and I do get the gui background but no controls are displayed. I am using 32 bit 10.04. Using the TTY I have uploaded all the current fixes.

Ubuntu :: Create Two Lists Of File Names Irrespective Of Directories And Compare?

Aug 13, 2010

I have an internal hard drive and an external hard drive, both with about 350 GB of data. The data came from the same source, but over the last couple of years, different people have moved files around to different directories, and some files have been deleted. Now I want to merge all the files onto the internal hard drive. I estimate that 80% of the files on the external hard drive are the same, so I don't want to copy 290+ GB of data over when I already have it.

Therefore, I need a way to find just the files on the external hard drive that don't already exist on the internal one. In other words, I need to create two lists of file names irrespective of directories and compare them, selecting only the file names that exist in one list OR the other. I've Googled for solutions but can't find anything suitable. There are ways to create text files of the file names and compare them with diff, but they have to be in the same order, and since these files are in vastly different directories, that won't work.

Software :: Format Sys.cfg To Load Specified Iso Image?

Apr 4, 2010

Situation: I have to install multiple SUSE linux installs onto blade servers without cdroms.

Goal: Create a bootable USB drive that contains multiple DVD Isos. Upon boot, a menu is displayed that allows the choice of several OS installs.

Problem: I just can't figure out how to format syslinux.cfg to load my specified iso image. Here is semi sudo code for what I want to do with my config:

sudo syslinux config
label <any label>
menu label install SLES 10 x86
kernel linux
append <path_to_iso=/sles10/dvd1_x86.iso> autoyast=10x86.xml
code....

Googling tells you quite a bit about syslinux.cfg, but it doesn't reallyt tell you how to load specific file for installation.

Red Hat / Fedora :: PXE Boot Kernel Image Format ?

Feb 17, 2010

Ive been trying to PXE boot a XEN kernel image in gzip format, and I was getting Invalid or corrupt kernel format error. Ive seen that other kernel images having a file type of Linux kernel x86 boot executable RO-rootFS are bootable. (both are bootable using grub anyhow).

Is there any way to convert the b/n the formats, or any other solution?

I was booting a Virtualbox instance, again I guess that shouldn't matter because pxelinux loads from tftp properly, but it doesn't even proceed to load the kernel. I think the issue here is with the image format itself rather than what it contains, or where it runs.

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Screen Keeps Bouncing Back To Login Screen

Sep 17, 2010

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

/etc/fstab:
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part6 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1

[code]....

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%

So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
