Ubuntu :: GDM Does Not Show Session Options

May 17, 2011

I have Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity 2D running smooth on my machine. I decided to give LXDE a run so I installed the packages from USC. After rebooting the PC, I was expecting to have a list of options on the GDM where I could select LXDE or Lubuntu. But the Session options do not appear in GDM. I selected Lubuntu in my Login Screen Settings but it still logs into Unity 2D after reboot (I've tried options LXDE, Lubuntu Netbook but results the same.) Here is a screenshot of my Login Screen Settings:

So, here's the question: How do I log into LXDE (or any other DE for that matter)? Why doesn't GDM show session options?

Programming :: Hashing The Components Of An Tcp Session To Assign/locate The Session In A Hash Table Bucket?

Nov 10, 2010

I have a very bad attempt at hashing the components of an tcp session to assign/locate the session in a hash table bucket. I am pretty sure that it has a very high collision rate and when there are a very large number of tcp sessions my application is having to search a long linked list to find the session within the bucket.

All the hashing functions I have found take a single string input where I need to input several integers and hash them into a single result. My guess is that any real hashing function is going to produce better results than what I am currently doing.

CentOS 5 :: Writing 2nd Session Of Multi-session DVD?

Jan 22, 2010

I am putting together some new systems for my customer and I'm having some trouble with a script that we use to back up files to a DVD R. The problem is that I can't write a 2nd session to the DVD unless I eject the disk and reload it. The drives are slimline type drives, Sony BD-5730S and Teac DV-W28S-V93, so they won't reload without human intervention. Opsys is CentOS 5.4 or RHEL 5.4. I've tried both AMD and Intel based mother boards. If i try this on Fedora 11 or 12 it works fine. This works on IDE attached drives but not a SATA attached drives. Fedora appears to use something called genisoimage instead of mkisofs. I can't get genisoimage to run on CentOS or RHEL.

Here's the code to setup the test files:

rm -f /tmp/BDtest/*
mkdir /tmp/BDtest
dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/BDtest/blank.iso bs=10M count=1
for NUM in {1..160}

Ubuntu Servers :: Restrict User Session Numbers And Allow Resuming Previous User Session?

Jun 30, 2010

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).

Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.

I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Open ConsoleKit Session: Unable To Open Session

Apr 11, 2010

The following message comes up when I boot up: Logging in user Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 0. When I press OK, the system completes the start up and everything looks normal. But when I try to connect to internet, I get the following message:

KNetworkManager cannot start because the installation is misconfigured. System DBUS policy does not allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution. KNetworkManager will not start automatically in future. If I reboot the system, I logg in successfully. So far the problem has appeared approximately upon every second time I boot up. Rebooting the system seems to take care of it.

Don't know what info is of interest. I'm using

Opensuse 11.2
KDE 4.4.2 (Factory)
After upgrade from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 it worked fine for a week or so.

But thunderbird is missing calender
Tried adding lightening, but it won't add into thunderbird.
Will try finding a diff add on, or if anyone knows how to get lightening into thunderbird 3.1.8 on ubuntu 10 that would be great as well.

I am new to Linux so I doubt I'll be using those any time soon so I'd like to have them out of my way for the time being.

Ubuntu :: Tar Newer And Exclude Options Does Not Run Together

Feb 25, 2010

Im trying to make backups using tar, and incremental backups using --newer. The scripts are:

Code:
tar -czvf $DISKPATH/backupRepos.tgz /home/repos/ --exclude /home/repos/Temp
for general backup (on saturdays)
and
Code:
tar -czvf --newer="`date -r $DISKPATH/backupRepos.tgz +%F`" $DISKPATH/backupRepos-inc.tgz /home/repos/ --exclude /home/repos/Temp/ for incremental the rest of the week.

The problem is that the first script runs OK, excluding /home/repos/Temp from the backup, but on the second, it makes incremental OK, but doesnt exclude Temp folder. Anybody knows how can i fix this script to continue making incremental but excluding also?

shutdown
restart
suspend
hibernate

and if I want to log off I click on the start button.but when I log on as my `guest` user, who has next to no permissions, I get log off, switch user etc on the `power button` icon. It would be nice to have all these options on the `power button` icon on my admin user. Can this be achieved? Why are they different?

Ubuntu :: Too Many Boot Options/No Gui At Startup?

Jun 30, 2010

I had bought a new wifi card(rtl8185) and spent 2 days trying to make it work. I finally got it working but now I am experiencing some other problems.

First of all I get two many bootup options. Before I used to have 4 generic options(2 different kernels with each of them having their own recovery), memtest and then my win7. Now I am having those plus 4 server options and 4 preemp(no clue what this is) options. I am suspicious that this has to do with some command I ran: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-* I got some notify at that point about broken packages. I followed the instructions given and made the messages dissapear(I don't remember excactly what I did). Then when I saw that it shows all those bootup options I tryied sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-server and sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-preemp but that didn't solve anything.

My second problem is that in startup now even if I choose the generic option it doesn't load the gui but just gives me the command prompt so I have to run startx each time. I am kind of a noobie in linux but would like to learn so please give me some guidance. I thought of reinstalling a fresh copy of Ubuntu-desktop but it's just too hard work. So I would be grateful if you could tip me on how fixing the problem as it is. I run Ubuntu 10.04 x64
