Ubuntu Networking :: Windows' Shared Folders Not Appearing
Mar 12, 2011I am networking from Ubuntu to Win 7. On Windows I have C:Users shared. In this directory I see two folders (or users, if you like): "Public" and "userr_" On UBUNTU when I go to Network > SERVER > Users I do not see either of the two folders that I see on Windows. I see a different one named "Default". I can access my optical drive on my windows machine fine via UBUNTU, it is just not behaving properly for this shared folder named "Users"

Dec 28, 2015I have sucessfully installed Debian 8 stable onto a powermac G5 with and Nvidia FX5200 graphics card, and got the graphics up and running using the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter. However, now the screen is showing completely messed up graphics. The kernel parameters that I have set are: nouveau.modeset=0 and video=TV-1:d.
I've now tried other Desktop environments and they too are messed up. Even window maker is messed up.
Ubuntu :: NTFS Folders But Not Files Appearing?
Jul 6, 2010I recently had a Windows Vista laptop crash and burn because of some damage done to all the lovely files Windows cannot boot without. Since my computer cannot boot from USB normally I used PloP Bootmanager to get it to boot from a live Ubuntu image on a USB stick.Before I install Ubuntu, I want to recover some of my files sitting on the disk, and the partitions seem to mount in the GUI- I can see them, I can click mount or unmount and it responds. The trouble is that while I can see all of the folders on the Windows partition: Program Files, Documents and Settings, etc. I can't see any of the actual files. The disk itself is reported to have data on it- even Ubuntu recognizes it's almost full, but every folder has 0 files with the exception of /media/[A particular character string] which has three boot-related files. This is true whether I use bash as root or not. I've tried mounting to a different point and remounting via the terminal using ntfs-3g and editing the fstab file to recognize the parition with full permissions, but nothing seems to work.

Oct 16, 2010I am trying to get my network music player (Logitech Squeezebox) to connect consistently with Ubuntu. Most of my music (FLAC files) is on a separate NTFS hard drive as I am dual booting with XP.I have edited the Fstab file somewhat based on suggestions on the forum but I can not seem to consistently connect to the Squeezebox with my music files (FLAC). What appears to happen is I set up my mount point in the media folder as Music and configure this with my Squeezebox which scans the Hard drive and finds all my music. The player works and it all seems fine even after a reboot but after a couple of reboots I get an error message when booting that says "The disk drive for media/Music/Flac is not ready yet or not present".
When I go to the media folder it appears that the Music folder is duplicated with a folder called Music_ and after a resetting the Squeezebox scanner to the new Music_ folder the process starts over again and I eventually end up with another folder called Music__ and so on.My question is 1) can I delete these Music folders without erasing all my Music library , and 2) how do I correct this situationHere is the Fstab file:# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

OpenSUSE :: Thumbnails Not Appearing For Pictures In Folders
May 18, 2011I am trying to figure out how to get all my pictures in my folders to have a thumbnail I have gone under view-adjust view properties and selected "show preview" option and than selected all folders at the bottom of the screen. I also went back under the view menu and made sure that the preview box was checked. Only maybe less than half of my pictures are able to be previewed is this a common problem.

In the ~/.X* files, it won't work. I read that another way of doing it is using

This will work for me. It's the only thing I can get to work. But when I restart, it will have to be done again. I'm using Slackware 12.2.

Dec 15, 2009I have an intermittent issue with with Samba. I can access my samba share with windows xp and vista using windows networking and even by mapping the share to a drive. The problem is that the files and folders disappear inadvertently and I can only access them again if I open the share again from the start with windows explorer. Selinux is disabled and the firewall ports for samba are open. The following software is installed:

Mar 31, 2010The Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies.This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

Jan 9, 2010I'm attempting to setup VNC in way that emulates our other OpenSUSE installs - where you can connect to servername:1 and be presented with a graphical login screen. From there, you login and have a full desktop session.
I followed some steps from this site (very easy): [URL] ... and it worked like a charm. I get the graphical login screen, I can login, I can open terminal, some apps, move windows around, no problem. But, here's the problem: SOME windows refuse to appear.
For example, if I try to open "Add/Remove Software", it first prompts me for the root password, but then all I get is a "busy" mouse cursor and an entry on the task bar at the bottom that says "Starting Add/Remove Software" for about 5 seconds and then it dies off. The same thing happens for "Software Updater" and for almost EVERY entry under the SYSTEM>ADMINISTRATION menu. Which, basically means I can't change any settings via the GUI, which is kind-of the point! =)
I can't find any logging that helps me diagnose this, the windows just never appear. The behavior is the same whether I login as a user or root from the login screen (but, obviously, the root user doesn't prompt me for the password prior to running the apps). I've tried lots of different tweaks on the configs mentioned in the link above, but nothing makes any difference.
Edit: Version is CentOS 5.4 x86_64 I performed a yum update + reboot, no changes.

Oct 11, 2010Could i install ubuntu and whenever i boot my pc up, is it possible to boot up automatically into windows without any OS choosing screen appearing; and instead only boot into ubuntu when i have the livecd in my drive and boot from it?Im the only one who knows about Ubuntu in my family and most would be quite confused if they didnt find thereselves booting into windows as they normally would. So to get around this and to have Ubuntu at the same time, i want to only be able to access ubuntu by putting in the live cd and booting it from that. Or is it possible for information that i download etc. to be stored onto the livecd itself?

Nov 23, 2010I am in the process of migrating my small workplace to a basic spin i've created of f14. Everything is suave but some file browser windows eg: file upload in gmail, hotmail etc, does not show my samba shortcuts i've created nor even the option to browse the network in the "places" section. It shows other locally created shortcuts but no samba ones. Just to test it, even creating an ftp:// shoftcut yeilds no dice. I had a quick search through the forums and I couldn't find anything. I have a feeling this has an easy solution that my inferior brain cannot comprehend! Loving F14 on my macbook pro and so are my employees in my office! Feels much less bloated than Ubuntu IMHO.

Jul 14, 2010I have used Ubuntu and Linux Mint for quite some time now until I got a new machine. Some friends told me to try OpenSUSE because it has really been polished over the last few years.Install went smoothly got everything working properly except for my video card. My video card is an ATI HD4890 with sound support over HDMI. I had the sound working in Ubuntu using the non-oss ATI drivers. I was wondering if someone could please teach me how to install them again here on OpenSUSE 11.3. My screen fonts and colors also look terrible compared to Windows or Ubuntu.
Is there a way I can make it look better? I remember CCC (Catalyst Control Center for ATI) had two color formats (RGB and YCbCr). I had to set it to YCbCr because my screen is an HDTV and it looked much cleaner than RGB. Is there a way I can acheive similar results with OpenSUSE?

May 21, 2011I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 on dual boot mode with Windows 7, I had to migrate from windows 7 to XP & again to windows 7. Each time after installation I updated grub. Last time while updating Grub PC went Down due to power failure. I update grub after the supply was resumed and it was successful.
On login I am facing a weird problem, My windows Drive are not appearing in Ubuntu. To access the drives I have to Plug a Pen Drive and access them first from an Application otherwise the don't even appear in Places drop-down list. If I don't plug Pen Drive they don't appear in Applications.
The other problem is that Disk utility shows space unallocated, allocated & Free above the physical capacity of Hard disk. My Hard disk is of 160 GB, Disk utility Shows Unallocated Space 18446744 TB. The Default Partitions made by me are 26GB, 14GB & others of 40 GB each.
CentOS 5 Networking :: Cannot Browse Windows Network Or Connect To Windows Shared Folders
Dec 22, 2010I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

Mar 22, 2010so after my upgrade to 10.04 I'm experiencing a puzzling problem with Grub2. It can load everything fine except for XP. I have XP on a separate partition, it is detecting fine and the grub.cfg file is created withou a problem when I the appropriate commands to update and upgrade grub. What happens is that I select Windows XP from the list and it goes to a black screen where a cursor in the top left corner blinks 3-5 times and then immediately kicks me back to the Grub menu. I can do this forever but the grub menu just gets reloaded every time. Any ideas?
