Ubuntu :: Deleting Pictures Off USB Connected Camera (SD Card)
Sep 20, 2010
Ubuntu 10.04. In order to get my photo application (digikam 1.2) to download photos off my digital camera/SD card I have had to configure Ubuntu not to 'mount' the usb connected camera when it is plugged into the pc. I can use digikam to download pictures off the camera/SD card into the pc. I'm having a problem when it comes to deleting the original pictures off the sd card/camera. Googling this problem it seems the issue is around Ubuntu only having read access to the SD card. It appears in windows world when an sd card is presented one has read/write access so things tend to 'work out of the box'.
In Linux/Ubuntu world I'm reading that digital cameras/SD cards do not (always?) work out of the box because you only have read access. If I close down digikam and launch nautilus I can see the camera/SD card but cannot write to it - I'm told I only have read access. I have also convinced my father-in-law to switch to Ubuntu but at the moment although he can download photos and view them I see no way of (ideally through digikam) of deleting the pictures off his camera/SD card.

I have a tv tuner card connected to a cctv camera for streaming, all works good in tvtime, cheese used to work but then I changed the resolution to a lower one and now it segfaults, purged reinstalled same issue, also I tried with mplayer, mencoder, mythtv (coludn't find any signal on the input) and camorama.
Code:
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:input=1:channel=1:width=768:height=768:device=/dev/video0
And it displays lines through everything but I can see the messed up image, I believe this is due to the current input format being YVU420, I was able in another program to verify this by changing the input codec to yvuv i think it was, how do I change the in mplayer, mencoder, camorama has this bug too, how to change this setting ut codec in mplayer and mencoder, also canorama has this issue, but I can actually see everything, b/w and with lines through it. I am just trying to record video to AVI.

Running Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.

I plug my camera into my computer and a window pops that says a camera has been detected. There are two buttons, "Ignore" and "Import Photos". I click on "Import Photos" and nothing happens. I'm wondering if I can just navigate to a folder where I might find the pictures, kinda like /media/cdrom/ to get to a cd.

Got a wierd one. Customer of mine has a digital camera that appears to mount just fine and can retrieve pictures fine. However, The thumbnail view of the pictures does not change when the old pics are deleted from the camera and new ones are put on.
If you mount the camera and click on one of the pics and open it in the default pic viewer it appears to be a different picture than what the thumbnail shows.
Now has anyone experienced a problem similar to this? Id love to hear how you got around this.
Customer is running Karmic Koala with all updates.

I'm trying to set up my parent's PC to automatically import pictures (in the background without any prompts)from the digital camera when it is plugged in via USB. And also to back up their Home/Pictures folder via ftp. Is there a way to automatically import pictures in the background without any prompts? I am using Deja Vu to back up via ftp and it seems to work fine. There is an option for daily backup, but I don't think I can pick what time of day it backs up. Is there a better option than Deja Vu?

I have overlooked some very important tools that would give me the information I'm looking for. What I'm trying to do is -
Plug in a USB camera
find /dev/camera-pseudonym
mount /dev/camera-pseudonym /camera
cp * ~/pictures
umount /dev/camera-pseudonym
and then work on adding this camera to /etc/fstab so that it will automatically mount to the usual place. I don't know how to find the pseudonym. I can, lsusb and see Bus 004 Device 009: ID 040a:05c1 Kodak Co. Digital Camera I can fdisk -l and not see any new partitions (which, with most USB devices with storage, I can usually see the partition listed in fdisk -l) After these two commands related to search FOR the pseudonym, I draw a blank and resort to manually searching /dev for things that may be useful.
This is difficult, though, because there are dozens of files named usb-something, and they're all very similar to one another, and not related to typical pseudonyms I'm used to (like /dev/usb[0-9], /dev/sd[a-z], etc) I would like to be able to find the /dev entry based on the ID 040a:05c1 because every USB devices I've tried has been listed by lsusb, and is accompanied by an ID number. How do I find the pseudonym in /dev for any usb device?

I have this problem, however the solution given there is outdated- There is no such menu entry (I tried to see if it was disabled, but it wasn't in the menu editor either).
So how would I do this in Karmic?
Edit: I found it. As a reference: Open Nautilus, go to Edit-> Preferences -> "Media" tab -> Photos -> Your choice.

I've looked all over the internet for an answer to this problem. Maybe I am the only one experiencing it. I am running ubuntu 10.10 and have problems getting pictures from my camera using any photo program (f-spot, picasa, etc). When I plug in the camera, it shows up in "Places" and under "Computer", it even brings up f-spot or whatever I have set to open under media handling in the nautilus preferences, however, when f-spot or picasa open, the camera is listed, but there are no pictures detected. I have removed and re-installed f-spot and picasa with the same results. I believe I even removed the config files for them before re-installing them.
I can open the camera in nautilus and drag them to a folder from the card. If I remove the card from the camera and use a card reader I can import the photos using fspot, picasa or any other photo program. I just cant figure out why f-spot or picasa cant get them from the camera as they have in past verisons. This is not limited to one camera, it happens with a canon and a Nikon. I hope thats not too much info and is not too confusing. The camera(s) show up in lsusb.

I'm trying to get some photos off a Canon Powershot SX110IS that uses an SD card (right now there is a Gigaware 4GB one in it) but this computer does not have an SD card input, so I am trying to mount the device through USB. This has worked with a handful of other cameras I've used in the past.
When I connect the camera to the computer and power it on, I get
usb 1-5: USB disconnect, address 7
usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 1-5: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=3192
usb 1-5: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-5: Product: Canon Digital Camera
usb 1-5: Manufacturer: Canon Inc.
usb 1-5: SerialNumber: DA9C3D5C2D7F4E3EA806AA70BCDF3E28
So the kernel is at least aware of it. I tried letting thunar mount it, but it complains
thunar-volman: No property info.capabilities on device with
id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_4a9_3192_DA9C3D5C2D7F4E3EA806AA70BCDF3E28.
I also tried letting dolphin automount it (yuck), but didn't get any messages about it. I checked the fdisk output and there was no ~4GB device, so I'm not sure that I can mount it manually.
Loaded modules:
asus_atk0110
ata_generic
ata_piix
atl1e
button
cdrom .....

In short: the files in 11.2 of the memory card from my camera were lower case, and in 11.4 they are upper case. Thus, F-spot uploads all the photos again, and I get two copies of each, one low case (old), another upper case (new), without the comments or rotations that I had made. How can I make the system automount it again in lower case? I knew the proper options to do this manually in fstab, but not via udev or whatever it uses.

I have tried putting the SDHC card in before switching on laptop, after, unmounting and remounting several times... on the odd occasion (1/10?) it reads fine, but more often than not, i can see thumbnails of all the images but on opening the file it comes out wrong...either most of the image is a grey block - so can see a tiny bit of sky then its as if it hasn't rendered the whole image...or, the image is striped horizontally, with as if a film negative has been shredded and then misaligned with the colours going wrong...is there an update, something to install to fix this? ETA: - its not the card which works perfect on other laptops and its not the card reader it opens fine in windows 7 on the same computer.

I'm trying to connect the Reliance 3G data card in Ubuntu 10.04. I've done modprobe then make settings in /etc/wvdial.conf with username and password field as empty string. But when I'm trying to connect with sudo wvdial it is showing that "Modem is not responding" and exit. However, the same procedure with Reliance netconnect+ which take a username and password, working well. Does 3G needs some settings?

having trouble with my asus 1000 rt2860 wireless n card and WPA/PSK/WPA2 connections. Funky thing is it worked in the 2.26.32-21 kernel (iwconfig shows ra0 as the wireless interface), but when the kernel was updated and pushed through in the ubuntu updates to 2.26.32-22 the wireless card won't stay connected and iwconfig says wlan0 is the interface. I checked the proprietary drivers and they said that the driver for my card was active, but not in use. How do I use the ra0 instead of wlan0?
how do i use the driver that's listed as not being used? I'm having to boot up lucid with the older kernel now, it's annoying, lots of programs aren't running as expected as a result. I've tried manually installing the driver from the RaLink website as detailed in many other posts concerning this wireless card. It seems to work for some people, but not with me.

I have a Netgear WG511GE PCMCIA card, and a driver from the original installation disk. I used an ndiswrapper-utils gui called ndisgtk to install the driver. I then do the following to verify an installation:
[Code]....
Unfortunately, when I put the PCMCIA card in, nothing happens. On Windows, a green light flashes even if the card is not connected to any network. At first I thought this might be a hardware issue, so I did #lspci and got:
[Code]....
Lo and behold, when I put a different unbranded Wireless PC Card in it works. I'm no expert in Networks, but to me this suggests a driver problem (i.e. the card is physically detected it just won't work). However, the correct driver was installed with ndisgtk and this was verified with #ndiswrapper -l, hence the confusion.
I'd be grateful if anyone else has had this problem/knows of this problem and is willing to share the solution with me/point me in the right direction. So far, Google has returned a few posts from a few years ago talking about patching kernels and manually building files etc (just before Prism54 became integrated into the Linux kernel).

I have a tape deck which I have connected to my sound card (REaltek AC'97 Audio, is the info I could gather) and of course when I play a tape I'd like to hear it though my sound card. Problem is, it is not working.
My info: A double boot Fedora 12/WinXP SP3 machine. Please do note that when I boot into WinXP I do not have this problem, I can hear the music fine. Further, previously and with exactly the same hardware but with FC 6 it worked! In other words by upgrading from FC 6 to Fedora 12 I lost the ability to use my sound card this way (in Linux).

We have a webcam that is connected to a tv tuner card via the rca input on the tuner card. I want to set that up so that i can view it remotely over the internet. I've seen you can use vlc to do this, but the problem is that I don't want to have the webcam's computer recording and streaming all the time. I want it to only do that when i want to view it from my remote computer. We don't view the camera at a regular time, so a set schedule wouldn't work.
I hope this all makes sense. Is this possible, and if so, what is recommended for getting this done.I'm hoping i can somehow control this with a remote control and we'd see it on our tv monitor (that'd make it easy for the non-computer people here), so if it could be done in a script that would be great cause i can have the remote run the script.
