Ubuntu :: Current Users Mounts USB Device As Read Only?

Dec 18, 2010

I am trying to add/delete files from my HTC Evo through ubuntu via enabling file sharing on the device. Ubuntu detects the drive, and mounts it up so that I can browse/read files off the device. However, I am not able to do any writing to the device because it is mounted as "read-only". The only wierd thing is that it worked last week, and I have not changed any settings on my system. Where should I start? Is the auto-mount for USB drives located in "/etc/fstab"? because here is the contents of that file, and I dont see anything for usb mounts:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name

Ubuntu Networking :: NFS Mounts As Read-only File System

Dec 15, 2010

I am trying ti set up a NFS server using the guide on [URL] However, the NFS mounts on the client side as a read-only file system, so I cannot modify nothing. Here is my /etc/export file on the server side:

Code:
/home/acrocephalus/ 192.168.1.35 (rw,async,no_root_squash)
and this is my /etc/fstab file relevant line on the client side
Code:
192.168.1.33:/home/acrocephalus/ /home/acrocephalus/AcrocephalusServer/ nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr
Then, I mount the system using the command
Code:
sudo mount /home/acrocephalus/AcrocephalusServer/
.

how to mount the NFS with full read-write permissions?

Debian :: USB Hard Drive Mounts As Read Only

Jan 4, 2016

Trying to go through some old hard drives I'd saved from a Mac we tossed years ago. Using a Sabrent USB adapter (USB-DSC9) I connected it to the Debian box and it mounts as /media. Here's the weird thing: although I can read all the random stuff, the directory with all my actual documents shows up as "you do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents". When I try to fix this with chmod, it tells me that the drive is read-only. Grr.

How do I mount the drive so that it's not read-only?

Fedora :: 14 ,Vfat Occasionally Mounts As Read Only?

Feb 8, 2011

I am running Fedora 14 with kernel 2.6.35.74 x86_64 and I am having an issue with a Vfat partition that is shared with Windows 7 on a dual boot setup. this partition contains my mozilla profiles and it occasionally mounts as read only in Fedora. I wont be able to write to it and root doesnt seem to be able to write to it when this happens. I checked this by trying to redirect an output of ifconfig. My fstab entry looks like this.

Code:
UUID=5830-75A8 /home/joe/share_storage vfat rw,umask=0000,uid=500,gid=joe 0 0
and ls -l

Code:
drwxrwxrwx. 8 joe joe 4096 Dec 31 1969

These two (fstab and ls -l) always look the same whether the partition behaves as read only or not.

Ubuntu :: Ext4 Primary Partition Mounts Read Only In Nautilus?

Jul 11, 2010

I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and Linux Mint 9 with an ext4 (sda3) data partition to be shared between both. My issue is when I go to that partition and mount it within Nautilus it mounts read only. I've searched around but I have not found the solution. I don't have a problem mounting it using fstab and mounting at boot. But, I know I have to be doing something wrong for it not to work correctly through Nautilus.

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 25G 3.2G 21G 14% /media/7e66f3a0-e35d-40b0-8427-4abfd3b53d8a
/dev/sda2 25G 9.8G 14G 42% /
/dev/sda3 56G 32G 21G 61% /media/data

I partitioned the drive like this. Ubuntu sda1 primary partition ext4 25gb, Mint sda2 primary partition ext4 25gb and Data primary partition 56gb. I then installed Ubuntu 10.04 first, then Mint. Both Ubuntu and Mint mount that partition as read only.

Ubuntu :: WD Studio External USB 2.0 / FW800 HDD HFS+ Partition Mounts As Read-only

Aug 6, 2010

I just got a new WD Studio External USB 2.0/FW800 hard disk drive, it is formatted to HFS+ with Journaling (hfsplus) and I use it for both an iMAC and a PC/Linux. The problem is that on my PC (Linux - Ubuntu 9.10) there is always some kind of read-only error whenever I try to edit, create, delete anything on it. I tried it on my iMAC and I'm able to read and write on it with no problem.

The mount command on Linux gives me: /dev/sdc3 on /media/My Passport type hfsplus (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=devkit) Clearly indicating that it ("My Passport" on /dev/sdc3) is mounted as "rw" (read and write, not read-only). I tried connecting it via Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 and both give me the same results. I also tried fixing it in my iMAC using Disk Utility but it reports on problem and I clearly safely "Ejected" it before unplugging it from my iMAC.

Networking :: Make NFS Mounts Easy To Find For OpenSuSE 11.2 Users?

Oct 29, 2010

Our organization uses OpenSuSE servers (NFS/LDAP/SAMBA/more...) and are in the works migrating all the workstations for users to SuSE from Windows as well.

I like how in windows the mapped network drives are all listed in My Computer. OpenSuSE has a similar "My Computer" that lists current drives, and general PC info (in KDE, which is what we use in the office). Is there a way to list mounted drives in here, so that users can easily find the network drives? I'm open to alternatives to listing it in SuSE's sysinfo page, as long as it doesn't mean telling my old school windows users, "oh yeah, all your network drives are in /mnt/shares/...they wont have a CLUE what that means. It HAS to be easy for them to navigate to.

My attached image is just a screen shot of SuSE's "My Computer" so you can see where I would ideally like to put the shares.

Server :: NFS Export Mounts On Client But Normal Users Can't Get Into The Directory

Jul 1, 2010

I have set up an NFS server on Fedora 13, and I am connecting to it with Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.

On both clients the command

Code:

works fine. On Fedora I can get into the directory with Nautilus and have read/write permissions as specified in /etc/exports on the server, but on Ubuntu I can only get into it from a sudo'd command line.

The ownership of the file on Fedora is "nobody" and on Ubuntu it's "user #500", with only people in the "500" group having access to it.

Obviously the permissions can't be changed on the client, but with the Fedora box being able to read/write to it with no problems I'm not sure what else I can do on the server to let normal users on the Ubuntu box read it.

Ubuntu Networking :: NFS Mounts Cause A Hang On Reboot Of The Mounts Are Lost

Nov 24, 2010

I have multiple ubuntu machines and I connect to one through an NFS share. I have done this for a few years without issue. However, since re-installing ubuntu and upgrading to 10.4 I have a problem with my system hanging when the remote shares are lost.

Basically, I can power down the machine downstairs, and my main machine then has a fit. I can not open any folders in ubuntu, nor can I shut down. If I try and shut down the system hangs, last time it hung for 8 hours before I had to kill the power.

These are the lines in my fstab

I don't know what I've done wrong, or how I can prevent this from hanging. I have googled the heck out of this as well and can't seem to find an answer either.

Ubuntu :: Anyway Can Get Normal Users To Just Read And Write To External Hdd's?

Nov 28, 2010

I have shared two external harddrives via samba on ubuntu, but only I can access it. The reason being is because I have logged into linux, and become the owner of the external hdd's. On the permission properties, I can see that the group I have created every other user under has "No Folder Access", and if I change this it reverts back instantly. So frustrating, I've tried to chmod it which hasn't done a thing. The owner of the external hdd's seems to be the only person who can access it over samba. Is there anyway I can get normal users to just read and write to external hdd's?

Server :: Samba Share Read Only For Guests / Write For Some Specific Users

Jun 19, 2011

I've been reading for a while about samba but I haven't found a solution to my problem yet.I'd like to know if, the configuration I have in mind, is possible at all ("security = user" is what I'm using now).I want a directory to be:
1) read only for guests and some UNIX users;
2) write for some other UNIX users.

The advantage of this configuration would be that every single user in my LAN (with or without a UNIX account) would be able to read the content of the shared directory Music and I (UNIX user andrea) could manage the folder directly trough samba preserving the correct owner/group and permissions on the new files/folder created.

Notes about my configuration above:
1) as it is now every user gets authenticated by samba as nobody so even I (andrea) cannot write in it;
2) commenting out the line "guest ok = yes" I can authenticate as "andrea" and write in it but guest access is not possible any longer.

Fedora :: Usb 2-1: Device Descriptor Read/64, Error -62

Apr 23, 2010

I tried to get 3d hardware support in my FC12 install. I grabbed the latest appropriate drivers from the nvidia website for my Geforce 6800 XT graphics card. I changed the inittab file to boot to command line, ran the .run file as root and ran into a couple errors doing so.

I then proceeded to use yum (which i do like but this is a bad scenario for me thus far) to update my drivers to the suggested kmod-nvidia drivers that exist out there. Once all of the installation was completed I rebooted and got the following error displayed at the top of my screen after the fedora loading bubble disappeared. The system just seems to hand at this point....

"usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -62"

I did a hard boot on the machine and tried again, this time i pressed the esc key to watch the interactive startup screen and noticed that after "enabling local filesysem quotas: [ OK ]" i get a

***Warning -- SELinux targeted policy relabel is required.
*** Relabeling could take a very long time, depending on file
*** system size and speed of hard drives.

This will continue with asterisks across the screen until eventually it stops and then I am stuck as to what to do from here on out. What could possibly be causing all of this mayhem?I have tried to use the fedora core 12 install cd to launch it into "rescue mode" and from the bash command line proceed with modifying my grub.conf to not use the "newly installed kernel (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686)" that was installed with yum during my kmod-nvidia driver installation.

So i had the idea to create a "virtual" video device and using some app that can read the wcam i could print the wcam's output on such device, which should be compatible and app-friendly, so i would use that device always.
