Ubuntu Networking :: Stops Working In 10.10 And Firefox Randomly Stops Working?

Nov 13, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.

3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Starts And Stops And Starts And Stops?

Feb 10, 2010

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

Ubuntu :: Copying Contents Through Ssh?

Jun 30, 2011

I want to copy the contents of a directory through ssh. The problem I'm having is that I can use the cp -r terminal function, but that would cause the directory itself to also be copied. I just simply want whats inside to be copied to another directory. Because of the way I have my server laid out, I would have to copy the entire directory, then copy each element one by one inside that directory into the specified folder. This is really tedious. So, is there a way I can just copy its contents? I was thinking of zipping it, the unzipping it, but when you extract, it once again just creates a new directory, not the contents inside.

If this is confusing, this is what I'm trying to do:
Directory: ../random/
Currently after scp -r:

[code]...

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Error Copying To USB Devices

Feb 3, 2010

When copying files to USB storage of any sort, Nautilus has started hanging after a few files (varies from 1-200 files and a few MB to over 5GB on various occasions), failing to unmount the device, and eventually throwing up an I/O error and freezing.

If I kill/restart Nautilus and reconnect the device it can still be read but comes up as read-only. I can't copy files to the device again, and attempts to erase and reformat it fail in both Ubuntu and Vista. Oddly enough XP will reformat the device, after which it works properly again.

Please help! I could deal when it happened to my USB key but I just bollocked my mate's portable drive and he's a bit pissed off Seems to be happening on all my USB ports.

Ubuntu :: Don't Have Those Permissions To Copying .img To Drive

May 22, 2010

I accidentally wiped my 120GB external hardrive clean ( it was at about 95% capacity ) and I was able to recover 111.80GB back using ddrescue and all of those files now sit in a Recovery.img file.

1 ) I know I have to mount this file... yet every time I try to mount it back on my external HD permissions jump down my neck, and to add to it when I try to give my user full permissions for that drive it never works and resets to how it was.

2 )I have tried copying to .img to my drive so I could jsut worry about it later and free up some local HD space yet I don't have those permissions as well...

Ubuntu :: Copying Links To Desktop?

Sep 19, 2010

When in Chrome or Firefox periodically I want to place a shortcut to a web page on my desktop. To do this I click on the button just to the left of the address and drag it up to the desktop. Sometimes this works but more often this creates a copy of the HTML page. And if the web page is HTTPS I get an error. I can drag to the Bookmarks Bar and it copies the link fine. Then I can drag it from the Bookmarks Bar to the desktop. I know I can create a launcher for the web page on my desktop but that's a lot of trouble. Why would dragging to the desktop work sometimes and not others? Are there any work arounds or fixes? I am using Ubuntu 10.4, Chrome 6.0.472.53 and FF 3.6.10.

Ubuntu :: Copying Files From Other Computers?

Jul 27, 2011

I had to leave rather suddenly (decision was Germany's, not fiancee's), and now am in the States again, but my files are still there. There are lots of things (mainly photos) on there, that I would like to have here. SOME stuff is on CD/DVD, but there is stuff that isn't.

Is there some way that I could access her computer and just copy files to mine?
(I picture two folders, one on hers, one on mine, and I just dragging an icon from one to the other - but I don't suppose anything's THAT easy...)

Naturally, her computer would have to be on, and I assume she could not be using it herself. Naturally also, I would get her permission first...

I assume that it would take a while, but if it were as simple as the icon thing I described above, then I could just go away and come back later. I assume something would be running to make sure that the destination file and source file were identical before proceeding to the next file.

[Before you suggest: why doesn't she just copy the files to DVD's and mail them to me? She is not all that computer saavy, I'm afraid, and trying to explain it all, including the exact folder names and such, Plus, how to use a DVD/CD burner and software... Plus translate it all into German... If I were rich enough, I could just go there and do what I needed, but that is not in the cards for the present. ]

IS there a way to copy stuff from her computer to mine?

Ubuntu :: Copying Files Between Windows Partitions

Jan 20, 2010

I need to copy ~300GB of drives from one Windows hard drive to another using a Ubuntu live CD. (I currently don't have enough power connectors for my Windows system drive AND both existing and new data drives. Stupid power supply.)

By Windows drive, I mean the drives are only data drive (no Windows install) but the files on the first drive were created and are used by my Windows system, both were formatted NTFS in Windows, and the files will again be used by Windows on the second drive.

Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of, or can I literally just drag the files across in Nautilus? Is there a faster copy utility available (I know there are Windows programs that can copy faster than drag-n-drop, but I'm sure Ubu doesn't have the same problem ) Will using a Live CD cause any specific issues?

Ubuntu :: USB Copying Starts Slow And Gets Slower?

Feb 3, 2010

I know there were threads on USB problems already, but there does not yet appear to be a definitive solution to USB speed problems on Karmic.flash drives are very slow to copy to. running lsusb in terminal, it appears to be running at USB 1.1 speeds, but even that doesn't seem to be the whole picture. When I copy an 800mb file to the drive the first 150mb transfer in a matter of seconds, then the mb/s seems to get slower and slower, starting at about 12 and ending at about 5. If I copy multiple files to the USB at the same time the problem seems to get even worse, taking about 10 minutes to copy 1600 m/b - less than 1 mb/second.

Ubuntu :: Copying A Large File From The Network?

Feb 17, 2010

I am trying to copy a file from a network resource on my Local Area Network, which is about 4.5 GB. I copy this file through GNOME copying utilities by first going to Places --> Network and then selecting the Windows Share on another computer on my network. I open it and start copying the file to my FAT32 drive by Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. It copies well up-to 4 GB and then it hangs.

After trying it almost half a dozen times I got really annoyed and left it hung and went to bed. Next morning when I checked a message box saying "file too large to write" has appeared.

I am very annoyed. I desperately need that file. It's an ISO image and it is not damaged at all, it copies well to any windows system. Also, I have sufficient space on the drive in which I am trying to copy that file.

Ubuntu Installation :: Copying Partition To Other On Same Drive?

Mar 27, 2010

I've got a problem I've been trying to work out for a while. I have a 160gb drive, and only 15gb dedicated to Ubuntu's installation because of a screwup. I have very little resources at my disposal, as I'm using a netbook with no optical drive, and I can't seem to get the liveusb to work. It just stalls after the menu with an error message. I have no way to connect my machine to the internet, and I've been forced to transfer files from a friend's computer. I'm running out of ideas, but one I thought of was to copy the install partition over to the larger partition. I'm not sure if it's possible, or if it would make a larger install or just a copy of the same size. I just want some clarification on how I would solve this issue, even if my idea doesn't work.
