Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. It's running as a media center box (Boxee amd mythtv), and also as a Asterisk PBX box. I have the box directly connected to my TV without a keyboard or mouse connected.
Is there a way to setup LIRC to flip through the icons on the desktop (similar to using the up/down arrow keys on the keyboard), and initiate a program with the remote? Would prevent the option of using remote desktop to open up or close a program
I'm using Debian Squeeze and my 0-9 remote control buttons and power off button work even if I've didn't installed lirc. In a Gnome desktop I could set up the volume too, but now as I'm using Fluxbox I can't start the volume control applet anymore (by the way does somebody knows any handy volume applet for Fluxbox ?)So my question is that if some button of my remote control already work without lirc, then there must by some drivers installed, when I've upgraded to a newer kernel, but I can't figure out what makes my remote control to work. Does anybody knows something about this and if there's something already installed for IR devices in newer kernels how can it be further configured ?
If i type the command "cat /dev/input/event6" in my terminal I can see that all my remote control buttons give a signal, but still I can't figure it out how can I set up all of them.
I believe I'm using Ubuntu 9.1 (how can I know for sure anyway?) and I use Harman Karman sound sticks that I got from a Mac. I use a Gateway PC and the volume control in the upper right toolbar of the desktop doesn't work. If I want to adjust the volume intensity I go into System > Preferences > Sound > Applications and I adjust the Firefox volume control. Sound comes through the speakers perfectly but I can't adjust volume with the desktop icon.

I also like to have control over what goes on my desktop panel. With the latest version I find that I cannot add to or delete from, neither can I move around any of the objects on the on the desktop panel.I there is some applet that has to be loaded or something in the software that I happen to be missing
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed 10.10 64-bit on my laptop. I have an older laptop with 9.10 32-bit on it. I installed vnc4viewer on the 9.10 laptop and started and set up remote desktop connections to let the remote user view and control the local desktop. I then tried Remote Desktop Viewer for the Applications menu on the 10.10 laptop and I can log in and see the remote desktop. When I try to do anything through the vnc viewer I can see my changes affect the serving machine but not the viewing machine. For instance, if I grab a window on the viewing machine and try to move it around the desktop, I can see it move on the serving machine. I guess the connection could just be very slow but it seems real time on the serving machine.

I set up the remote desktop on ubuntu and I connect to my current ubuntu's desktop with the VNC viewer. It is working, I see the mouse cursor, but I cannot see the files while I'm dragging them.
Another friend of mine has THE SAME problem.
I have installed and configurated NX server, and the problem is the same.
If I connect with the nx client, using a different session, I can control my desktop, I can drag windows and files, but if I'm using the shadow option from the nx client program, then I cannot drag windows and files.
I have done something to loose access to my Contol panels and menus I have logged into another user and all seem to work fine. I have logged in under GNOME safemode and it just scrolls stuff on the screen and brings back to main login screen. I have started to reboot to recovery mode only to find I have no clue as to what to do here as I am Command handycapped..

I upgraded from 8.04 to 9.04, or something like that. I had the VNC server started, the one from synaptic manager, but after I completed the upgrade, did reboot to the server, and now when I connect (from my windows machine) with the VNC Viewer, and after I login with the password, I can ONLY view the linux, and I can't drag items, windows, etc. I can't do anything. One friend of mine had THE SAME problem, and I'm sure it's a bug. I have removed the VNC server from synaptic package manager, reinstalled it, and I got the same problem. I have downloaded the 9.04 Ubuntu linux, installed it on a temporary desktop PC, and it had THE SAME problem. Now (after 2 months) I have downloaded again the 9.04 version, from exact place, and the VNC server is working fine.
Now, my question is, how do I fix this problem on my current Ubuntu 9.04 linux server ? 'Cause if I reinstall the VNC server from synaptic manager, it will not change at all, I will still have this problem. Ofc, on the remote desktop preferences, it is selected "Allow other users to control your desktop". I dezactivated it, activated it again, still can't control the desktop, I can only view it.
Or, is there any other remote desktop program tht I can install to control my X on the linux server from my windows machine ? I don't need X to configure my server, but I need X 'cause I have YM and programs with GUI, torrents, etc.
In the past few days Ive noticed a lot of updates. Yesterday morning several times I went to click on items on my desktop and I couldnt. I thought it was just my batteries getting weak. Yesterday afternoon it got so bad I couldnt click on anything for hours at a time. I could only power offIve been reading lots of forums and threadsd there are lots of possible problems to this but they all come down to xorg file and usb issues.
An example of one possible problem: When I have the system log open I can not move the app around, make it bigger or smaller, I can only scroll on the right pane and have to use the mouse keys to navigate the left pane. And if I want to shut the app down, sometimes I can use the ctl+F to close it but sometimes I cant.After I shut the app, any app that is, the mouse pointer turns to |< and I cant click on anything for 5 min to 5 hours. It was suggested to run sudo dpkg �reconfigure �phigh xserver-xorg but when I did I didnt see anything visually or in the terminal occur.
I did a clean DVD install of 11.3 instead of the upgrade. I'm using a 64 bit Panasonic CF-52 Toughbook with a 250 Gig removable drive. I have noticed on 11.3 that the on-screen volume control applet is gone! It was right next to the battery and the WiFi indicators on 11.2 but it is gone with 11.3.
Now what ever you listen to is FULL BLAST! It makes you go back to the desktop and use the hardware adjusters on the laptop. Even the usual keyboard key combos are not responding. It can be embarrassing especially in quiet, public settings.
I have fedora 13 64bit installed on the box I want to connect with vnc, I have tigervnc & tigervnc-server installed.
As my user I run:
vncserver
then I can connect to that box using: 192.168.1.2:1 but it is a different desktop?

I have recently had my ubuntu 10.04 updated and lost the show desktop (minimise button usually attached to the desktop panel located at the bottom far left corner of the screen. (The one you click on which minimises all windows and takes you direct to the desktop.
I have tried looking for options in the Appearance and Windows options in Menu-system-preferences but cant find anything, that could be used to enable or disable this feature. Secondly, since upgrading to the current version of Ubuntu I have been missing the volume control button usually located by the date/wireless/ Power off button/ icons on the panel located top right of screen.
I have won my fight and my father in law accepted to give gnu/linux a try as his server and to run on the computer of the new company he is starting. One feature he would like is to be able to access his work desktop (graphicaly) from home. On my side, I would like to be able to control his desktop from home if I need to show him things. I already can SSH in terminal to install and maintain stuff but, to move the mouse around and point him where to click or what to use would be invaluable.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday, after I first installed Slackware 13.1 I had no trouble replacing the default wallpaper with a simple gradient. Very easy. Today, (after re-formatting the drive and re-installing the entire system because I messed around with a script and it wouldn't boot) I can't change it. I spent about an hour messing around with menus and settings trying to figure out how I did it, and eventually, as a last resort, turned to the help file. It tells me to choose Configure Desktop from pop-up menu when right-click on the background.
But Configure Desktop doesn't appear in the pop-up menu. (At least, not anymore it doesn't.) The help file also says to use the Control Center, but I can't find any trace of that either. I haven't the slightest idea why these are missing. Since I re-installed everything onto a freshly re-formatted drive, anything I played around with before shouldn't have any effect on the new installation. The problem is there both when I login as root and user. I really don't want to try re-installing everything again.
The only changes I've made to the system since the re-install is to edit /etc/inittab to replace the 3 in id:3:initdefault: with a 4, so I get a graphical login, and to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to place an & at the end of the dhcpcd request which, according to the instructions I was following should put it in the background to speed up boot-time slightly. I haven't (knowingly) played around with anything that should affect KDE, except changing settings from within the KDE menus. I know it's probably going to be something very simple, and possibly obvious in retrospect, but I'm new to Linux and have no idea what I'm doing here.

View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.
I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.
Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

I home-made the exact configuration detailed on the lirc.org webpage for making your own IR receiver. It's all wired correctly, I'm just not sure that the serial port is working like it should. I've used a voltmeter to determine that the voltage regulator is working and all.....
I've got LIRC configured with the home-brew IR receiver, and a Haupauge remote. I run irw and NOTHING happens no matter what remote I point at it. I've used test leads to see the effect using a remote on the unit has, and it seems to be working correctly, so either a driver or config file isn't working correctly. I've read a BUNCH of pages but simply don't know enough to troubleshoot any further on my own.
I have been working to try and get lirc to work with my Winfast 2000/XP. I keep getting an error that the kernel module isn't loaded. This is on Ubuntu 10.04 x64. When I try to start the service, I get the following:

I tried everything here; [URL].. When I try to use the Nuvoton IR Receiver it completely locks up the system and I need to chroot into the file system and disable lirc just to get booted again. Does anyone have LIRC and the IR receiver working on this box? I also went through the list and tried all the cir receivers in the lirc list. Here is the hardware info;

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and am trying to get lirc to recognize my pcusa mce remote control. I have been working on this for a week and have not had any success. Please note that I am very new to Linux. I am comfortable moving around in the terminal but most of anything else that I do in the terminal is just following instructions.

When I run
cat /proc/bus/input/devices
I do not see anything that could be the remote. I have tried plugging the USB receiver into my Ubuntu 10.10 net book but it doesn't see the receiver either. I do not have a windows machine that I can test the remote on but I plugged the receiver into my iMac and I did get a red LED lit that I haven't seen on the Ubuntu machines.
When I run irw and press buttons on the remote I see nothing on the terminal.
When I run:
sudo mode2
I get:
mode2: could not get file information for /dev/lirc
mode2: default_init(): No such file or directory
I have tried mode2 both with lirc running and stopped and I get the same response either way.
I have confirmed that there is no /dev/lirc but there is a lircd in /dev (it's not a directory). Also I had read somewhere that lirc doesn't work under Ubuntu 10.10. Is that the case?
I have recently built a new Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) and installed MythTV and LIRC.I have correctly (?) configured LIRC for my specific IR Blaster on the serial port. Using the test send (see below), nothing happens - ie none of the pins on the serial port change state, and hence my IR Blaster hardware does nothing.
