Ubuntu :: Computer Slower Than Frozen Molasses After Version Upgrade
Aug 20, 2010
On one of my computers I did something I rarely do--used the version upgrade method. I went from 9.10 to 10.04. I normally upgrade by burning a CD, wiping / and clean installing the new version.
This HP desktop was BLAZINGLY fast prior to this; now it's slower than frozen molasses.
Seriously, it's awful. It's like everything freezes, including the clock--say it's 1:11:23, it stops there and when it starts again it'll be 1:14:05 (or whatever!). And it does that continually. Meanwhile the trackball works as far as moving the pointer, but it's impossible to actually *do* anything.
I'm really, really glad I left my other four computers running 9.10 for the time being.
I'm going to do a fresh install with a CD, but I'm just curious if anyone else has had this experience after doing a version upgrade? I did it this time because I'm lazy and it was so easy!

I have a 2-year old DELL XPS M1330. I used to have Windows Vista on it, but over time, I believe it became clogged with too many programs and so I wiped the hard drive and installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS about 2 weeks ago. However, ubuntu many times seems to run slower than vista did. I have 4 GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3MB Cache, 800MHz FSB), 320GB HDD, 128MB nVIDIA GeForce 8400M. Ubuntu recognizes me as having dual processors at 2.1 GHz and 3.4GB RAM, but when I'm watching a simple video, whether online or locally on the computer, my CPU usage invariably jumps to 100% and it lags. Sometimes, even simple word processing makes it slow significantly.

Any ideas how you unfreeze a computer?
Last night I decided to download a few games using a different tool to the Synaptic Package Manager. I can't think of its name at the moment but it gave a brief description of each app with a tiny screen-shot. I'd like to find out its name but the only thing that will move is the mouse pointer.
I left the computer alone last night thinking that I'd given it too much to do and thought that it would resolve itself when I woke up. Sadly the computer is still frozen with only the pointer moving around the screen.
Is there any way that I can get the computer back to life?
Or is my only option to hit the Off Button?

Very strange happenings going on here. Have three computers that dual boot with Ubuntu and WindowsXP. All three have failed in the identical manner! While reading a web site in Windows, the computer screen becomes frozen then a messege flashes momentarily stating "A problem has occurred" then the computer shuts down and will not reboot. Attempting to reboot results in a black screen with an unresponsive cursor in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Not sure if i am correct but I was under the impression from all sorts of posts & videos that 10.04 was supposed to have a fast bootup. I have upgraded from 9.04 jaunty bootup is quite a bit slower than on the old version and is quite tedious is this correct? are there any logs i can upload to see if i have an error some where?

I run Ubuntu (10.10) from a flash drive on my Dell computer. Yesterday when I tried to upgrade it to 11.04 After downloading a lot of files, and then installing most of them, my computer froze. When I restarted my computer, It went straight to booting Windows XP. I didn't get a GRUB screen at all.So somehow GRUB and Ubuntu got screwed up, and I'm wondering if there's anyway I could salvage what I have (I know I can use a Live CD to get my files off of there). So is there any way I could avoid having to do a clean install? Could I possibly salvage the files which upgrade to 11.04?

so, last night i checked my e-mail, jumped on facebook for a minute and went to bed. i got up this morning and my computer seemed frozen; no mouse/keyboard, no network visibility.....nothing. the screen was just frozen. tried too ssh into it to reboot, but the network wasn't up on it. i had to hard reboot. NOW, it just reboots forever....and ever....and ever. i have a WinXP partition on there along with my F12 and that wont boot either. selecting a previous kernel does nothing either. it wont even boot off the F12 install DVD. just keeps rebooting. I've never had this happen to me. so, it seems like a hardware thing to me, but i dont know if its my mobo or the drive. i suspect a mobo issue as the drive still spins up and gets me to the grub menu.

I am running openSuse 11.2 (32-bit), my CPU only supports 32-bits. I have a hardware RAID device. My system has 4GB of RAM. When I configure my system to only use 3GB, 2GB, or even 1GB, using mem=1024M in grub, my RAID performance is much better then when letting my system use the default 4GB available. Can anyone explain to me why this is? Is there anything I can do, i.e. kernel configuration, that will help performance when running with all 4GB enabled?

I've been using fedora on my Lenovo R61i since I got it...I believe the first version I used on this laptop was f10. I always try to keep it on the latest distro and I also enjoy a clean install every year or so. One thing I was always impressed with was how quickly I could go from sleep to back up and online. So I decided it was time for a clean install this weekend to fedora 15. Now when I wake it up (open the lid), it takes over a minute for the wifi to connect again. This hasn't been the case for the last 4 distro's so I'm wondering what I can do to speed that process back up, is there a particular package I can downgrade or is this something on their radar already and I should just wait for an upgrade?

Just upgraded to 11.3 from the terminal. There were a few hiccups, but it said to run "zypper verify," and it downloaded a few files and finished. When I rebooted, the graphics were fine, but the arrow in the middle of the screen is frozen. I can move the mouse till I get carpal tunnel, but the arrow ain't gion' nowhere. So how do I "unfreeze" my mouse? (Besides knitting it a sweater!) I'm hoping for a "ctrl/f2", and that aterminal can be opened that way, with a command to wake up the mouse dameon.

I installed debian squeeze on an old computer that I found. (Pentium 4 3.2GHz HT) I installed from the i386 version, but now the uname command shows that its an i686. I don't find many packages that I need using apt-get. Do I need to compile each package I need from source or use dpkg to install the deb of an i386 version?
Can I use the i386 version on this computer rather than the i686 version? Will it cause a signifncant performance decreaes? (I use this computer to mostly do some reading and writing and file storage, no gaming etc.) How do I force the installer to use the i386 version?

I just upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze and now when I enter startx I get a solid black screen and the computer does not respond to any keyboard input. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Esc, Alt-F2, Alt-F4, etc. all do nothing. No beeps or anything. I have an NVidia graphics card and have been using the proprietary NVidia drivers. I originally thought the problem might be related to this driver but I tried both the nv and vesa drivers and got the same results.
Attached is my Xorg.log.0 file. It just ends after the GLX extension initialization.I am able to use ssh to login after running startx. Running "ps aux" from the remote machine I did not see a process for X. I copied the output below the Xorg.log.0 file.

OpenSuse 11.2
LXDE (Latest version)
It used to have a lightening speed. But now every application is taking few seconds to start, even on Konsole, the commands take some seconds to get typed ! (I literally have to wait for cursor to move and commands to get typed on Konsole). Folders are taking some seconds to get opened !
I rebooted the computer but that proved to be useless.
Here the ps output:
Code:
anisha@linux-uitj:~> pstree -Apuh `id -anisha`
id: invalid option -- 'i'
Try `id --help' for more information.

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.
After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my Lenovo L420 laptop. Now my friend told me that if I had installed laptop version on it then it would have recognized events related to laptop like closing down the laptop screen and all.
Q1. Is there any way by which I can upgrade it to laptop version?
Q2. What are the differences between both?

I've been dual booting 10.10 with Windows7 for about a month. Today is the first time I've encountered a serious problem.
This morning, nothing functioned properly after trying to open several programs. The computer seemed to be "frozen", although the mouse was working fine.
I decided to reboot, but then encountered an even bigger problem.
It failed to boot and got this message: no init found. try passing init= bootarg
The problem now is that it requires a Live CD session and I keep getting this: GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
In case it matters, I didn't install 10.10 from an ISO, I just upgraded from 10.04.

Im experiencing a strange problem with 10.04. When it first boots up its reasonably quick (as snappy as Gnome ever has been) but after its been running for a day or two it gets ununsably slow and has to be rebooted.
I dont see how it can be anything to do with my hardware as it runs OK when first started. Ive monitored RAM usage and it doesnt seem to differ much. There's always the same amount unused.

This is a bit weird, but in thinking about cleaning up my hdd, which has a single install of 10.04/EMC2 on it,I took my first look at Computer Janitor. When it opened, it seemed amazingly basic, in fact just two panes with no indication of what the few entries were indicating. The "About" tag in the Help menu indicated that it was version 1.13.3, but Synaptic tells me that version 1.14.1 is installed.A bit of reading in the Forum suggests that this is not highly thought of, anyway, so I shall leave it alone. As I'm currently having other issues with this installation, and am about to do a clean install, I thought I'd drop this pebble in the pond, and learn a bit more before my next turn around.

this is my first time actually asking for help here, so forgive me if I make any mistakes. The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my mom's old system (not too old, has vista on it) and even from the live cd it wouldn't boot. Then I tried 8.04 because I know that works on my XP system. However it would freeze during boot but at least showed that it was booting (the bar was starting to fill).
The system is an eMachine T5226:
CPU : Intel Pentium D Processor 925 (Dual-Core)
64-bit processor with Intel EM64T Technology
(Each core operates at 3.0GHz | 2 x 2MB L2 Cache | 800MHz FSB)
Operating System : Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
Chipset : Intel 945G
[Code]...
Since we bought it it's been upgraded to 2 GB of ram and has a nVidia 8400gs video card and a belkin wireless adapter now. I can't understand why the live cds won't fully boot since my single core 2.2Ghz boots just fine with 8.04.
I was thinking of trying 6.06 to see of that might work. However I was unsure if the system is capable of running Ubuntu and might need Kubuntu or another distro.

When i installed my proprietary software under additional drivers (it was the recommended one). My ubuntu will no longer run Unity 3d version. It says my computer can't handle it.

I've purchased a couple of books so that I can begin to learn JAVA. Finding recent editions is very challenging, so the books I found cover JAVA 5.0. I plan to go through all of the exercises in both books. Which version of Java should I have installed on my computer?
Should I install 5.0 so that the examples from the book will work perfectly? Will I run into confusing situations or problems if I try the example exercises using Java 6?

Today, I was upgrading my desktop from Jaunty to Karmic (a little behind schedule, I know). All packages downloaded successfully, and then the computer began the process of applying all of the updates. During this period, at some point, it lost power. Now, of course, it won't boot.
Fortunately, I have a separate /home/ partition, and it was unmounted during the upgrade process. So, my personal data and settings are fine. But the OS is useless.
I'm guessing that I'm completely buggered here, and there is nothing that I can do except re-format the Ubuntu partition and clean install Karmic from an install disk.
