Ubuntu :: Changed Background Image And Nautilus Crashes
Mar 30, 2011
I've been messing with settings of nautilus via
Code:
"Edit" > "Backgrounds and Emblems..."
and selected a background image.
And from that moment on, nautilus crashes (reloads) on almost every right click, menu opening, and almost any action, nautilus should do (as a file manager). Running Nautilus from Terminal and observing the output left me with a blank output ... no errors, no warnings, just reset.

I have two things to ask.
1) I have set a large image as nautilus background. How can i prevent it from scrolling down when the filelist is long?
2) I have two drives, one a 200GB partition on my notebook drive and a 250GB portable drive where I store Data. Both are NTFS filesystems.
I want to defrag them. using Wine, changing them to ext and defragging over the network. If there are any programs that can run on my system and defrag, please let me know.

Ok for some reason my login background changed on its own without my permission or anything, I find it to be a little suspicious but im going to let it slide. Can anybody tell me how to change my Login Background in 10.04? I have no idea how it happened the first time, might have been a glitch or something.

I have installed 2D Unity 11.04 on an old desktop PC. This afternoon I tried a newly burnt Fedora 15 disk just to see if Gnome 3 would run (no luck, better graphics needed, started in Fallback Mode). Anyway I tried the live Fedora disk out for a while then ejected it and rebooted to restart Natty. I was surprised to see the Grub screen now has an earth/space theme background with Debian logos. What happened to the default purple background? Natty booted as normal and I have not installed Fedora to the hard drive.

I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

I just installed Dropbox. When install completed the appearance of nautilus changed. It looks atrocious - like a 1990s Apple O/S.I guess I shall have to uninstall Dropbox. Last time I tried using it on Ubuntu a year or so ago, I binned it because it stopped working.I just tried changing the Appearnce settings. That's not made any difference. It's doesn't seem to be merely a colour theme that's changed. The actual icons are different. Everything's been squared off. Nautilus icons have lost their nice rounded edges. This might seem minor but it matters. And assuming Dropbox is the cause of this, what else is it making a mess of?

I'm using rhythmbox and a classic ipod. A couple of times I have managed to write podcasts to my ipod. I'm not sure how I did it but it doesn't last. I have tried lots of random things from forum posts. When I try to change permissions in nautilus they change back straight away. I have my name as owner and group. I have the Lynx Ubuntu OP.

gksudo nautilus sets the background to default (Because nautilus is rendering the desktop) I set the gconf key to stop it rendering the desktop, but this only affects the icons. How can I get it to give me back my background? Edit: Fixed the desktop (--no-desktop option on nautilus command) - need to find how to kill the nautilus process automatically when I close it.

Nautilus transparent background patch by pr3ddi Wed Mar 02, 2011 11:10 pm here you go. a nautilus transparent background patch for everone who is not afraid to compile nautilus from source
new version available here --- http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1814132
what you will get: - a transparent nautilus desktop window in compiz, which has the usual desktop integration (icons and context menu) - a working wallpaper plugin, that can be set to show a different wallpaper on every screen - you can even use mplayer to play a video on your background
how it's done: - the nautilus desktop window is modified to render a transpart background, if a composited screen is detected - window type is changed from _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP to _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_NOTIFICATION - window is set to be keept below all other windows and the mouse wheel event is proxied to the root window the patch was developed for nautilus 2.28.1 (Ubuntu 9.10) first and then applied to nautilus 2.30.1 (Ubuntu 10.04) the only difference in 2.28.1 is that there is one more row (below set_image_properties) in the original eel-background.c

Been trying to get mac4lin to work, and in the process, I attempted uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling gtk-engines-pixbuf. This has now screwed my system so that the background is a light grey and any attempt to change the wallpaper just makes X crash, forcing me to Ctrl Alt Backspace. I'd rather avoid a reinstall of the system since I have it customized to my needs, so is there a solution to this? I tried reinstalling the pixbufs package, but no dice.

So I had this folder containing two open office text documents, I hibernated my computer a few times while I was working on one, then when I came back I couldn't save it because apparently it was open by someone else so I exited out and tried to open it again, but the folder it was stored in turned into a picture of a white safe with a play icon on the top right corner, and when I open it, it is just the picture.

I installed google-earth (newest) and when it failed to work I tried adding the /usr/google-earth dir to the library path via /etc/ld.so.conf.d/google-earth.conf ( i made this file and added the /usr/google-earth dir to it) this didn't work and I found the correct work around to remove the included libs in the /usr/google-earth dir forgetting to remove the first workaround i did.
now it gets weird... a little while after I ran gthumb and it crashed... run it in a terminal and I see it complaining about the same files as google earth was before ... uh oh i thought and removed my fix and rebooted... well X wouldn't start after that and I thought maybe I have to rebuild /etc/ld.so.cache so I ran ldconfig and reboot and now everythign works great EXCEPT when I open the "Computer" or Trash Icon from the desktop or menu the background is white (normally black) until i click view->compact or view->icon and it goes back to black... this repeats everytime I open the window and all newly open windowsI created a new user to test to see it it was profile related and the new user has the same behaviour.Fedora 12 (upgraded since fc7)Edit: I see this in ~/.xsession-errors
Code:
(nautilus:445): Eel-WARNING **: "nautilus-directory.c: directories" hash table s

It has been about a month since I installed openSUSE 11.3 (64bit, Gnome), and overall it is better than 11.2, but I have had some stability issues that I did not have with 11.2.
1. openSUSE 11.3 crashes very often when I change desktop background. I haven't experiment with it but it happens with downloaded images.
2. Changing monitor environment makes openSUSE to freeze. Fresh boot with external monitors connected usually works, but plugging & unplugging monitors usually makes openSUSE freezing. (I have to force power down)
3. Suspend makes openSUSE freeze a lot. Usually one suspension works, if I re-suspend it, it usually freezes.
I was wondering if these are common with 11.3 or I'm the only one who is having this.

I'm just curious as to if anybody has figured out a way to hack the ability to add a background and/or pattern for Nautilus while in List view. As it stands now, it won't work while in List view. Sadly, that's the only view I ever use, and so I always have the boring white background. I would love a brushed metal look or something.

Since upgrading to 11.04, nautilus is crashing whenever I try to upload anything to a FTP server. It starts the transfer but then crashes immediately. Highly annoying as I'm a web developer and now stuck with using another FTP client that is less efficient for drag and drop file transfers...erg.

I got a big? issue with Nautilus in Ubuntu 11.04.
Here i copy the the terminal messages when i log as a root user code...
When i clic on the trash, the app crashes and closes. When I try to move some protected files to the trash -wich i can't delete without login in terminal as root user-, the app crashes again.
How can i fix this? I installed -I'm new in Ubuntu, but i love it- the Nautilus Elementary 2.32.2 as i saw in those classics "10 things to do after installing Ubuntu Natty...".

I'm currently writing a little script that gets a random image from the xkcd website and then sets it as the desktop background. I grab the picture with wget, and to prevent the script from spamming by creating a new file for each image the new picture always gets downloaded to "wall.png". Apparently this is a problem for gconftool-2. When I run the following command for the first time, the background changes:
Code:
gconftool-2 --set --type=string /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /home/zilioum/wall.png
But if I run my script, and then run the same command again nothing happens. It seems like gconftool-2 does not change the background if the filename stays the same even though the picture changes.
Things I tried but that don't work:setting the backround to a dummy location and then setting it to wall.png unsetting the value first, and then setting wall.png as background
I could always download it to the actual filename, set that file as the background and then move that file to wall.png or delete it. But I'm wondering if there is a way to "smart up" gconftool-2.

I've recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.4 on my HP Mini 210 HD, and installed gtk2-murrine package to utilize a theme I downloaded gnome-look.org/content/show.p...content=124548...This all worked well, until I attempted to change the background on the Gnome desktop. Upon entering the Appearance configuration, there is a file explorer fork-bomb that occurs and floods my Taskbar for up to a minute after I've entered the config. Has anyone ever experience this and if so, how can I fix this?On top of this, I cannot change the background even if I select a new image.

I was installing a bunch of packages and one of them ended up changing the background image. This was seen after logging back in. I proceeded to right click on the background and change it back while logged in. After a 2nd reboot I could see it changed it for my userid, but I still get that wrong background during the login prompt. How can I change it back for there?
