I can't log in from a locked screen anymore, such as when returning fromeep or hibernation. I can, however, work around the problem by clicking "switch user" and logging in from the GDM greeting screen. Logging in from a terminal also works.I recently had a problem where /etc/passwd, /etc/groups and some other files were deleted. But I have restored them - otherwise I couldn't log in at all.

I've got an HP Netbook with Jaunty installed, and I've got an older Dell laptop running Debian.A friend of mine, on several occasions, has told me that when I left my computers unattended he could do some kind of series of key-strokes, and then a window comes up and he says that he can change the password for my account.I've asked him to show me how he does it, but he never will because he doesn't want me to be able to thwart himIs he lying, or is it for real? if it's for real, how do I go about changing it so that it can't happen anymore?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there a config file to toggle whether the screen is locked after hibernation? I looked all over preferences but if it's there, I missed it. In Ubuntu, the screen was always locked after waking up. In Squeeze, it's going directly to desktop. It's not a biggie but you never know when someone might try to access your account so I kind of liked that it would wake up locked. Maybe it's doing that because I'm the only user on the system?
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhile I was away from my computer a friend changed my keyboard layout to a random layout thinking he could revert it via mouse actions only. Unfortunately, by the time I returned, my screen was locked. Now I cannot unlock my session to get back in to the KDE session to restore the correct keyboard layout.
However, I can log in to a console. In the console (e.g., Ctrl-Alt-F1), the keyboard layout is unchanged, so I can edit any text files and make any other changes required. How can I change the KDE keyboard layout from a console? I'm running Kubuntu 10.04. There is no .kderc file in my home directory. And Xorg.conf doesn't contain the settings either. I'm not sure where else to look.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 TLS from a pen-drive (running Ubuntu example). I created a new user account. When I lock desktop it correctly turnout the screen (everything go dark). When I move the mouse Ubuntu returns perfectly. My problem is that in any time I am not asked for password. I want that Ubuntu while locking ask for password to login again. I already tried configuring lock down and lock properties (application) via gconf-editor.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Debian 7 with LXDE installed on a msi-based-notebook. Immediately after i make the login (in graphics mode), the LED of "num lock key" turns on and lock,making the keyboard impossible to type properly.
I've tried to reconfigure keyboard,but it had no effect. And yes,i have tried to use the "Fn key + num lock" combination, but had no effect too.
My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
In Ubuntu 10.04: if the screen has been locked (automatically by the screensaver or user-activated using the top-right menu) pressing the power button doesn't initiate shutdown. Is this a bug or is it a configurable option?I would expect to either get the usual 60 second shutdown delay or a graceful shutdown right away.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am building a small Ubuntu box made for our clients to listen to an audio stream. At startup, I have scripts that start the audio stream, then locks the screen so clients can't change any settings. It works flawlessly.
However, if a client has to shut down the box, they can't. Note this is a headless unit, no monitor, keyboard, or mouse. It will ONLY be used to play streaming audio. I need for the client to be able to safely shutdown the unit by pressing the power button. But, when the power button is pressed, ubuntu asks for the user password. Is there a way to just make the system shutdown without entering a password?
I went to lock the screen when I got up from my computer. I came back and there was a black screen. I tried hitting different buttons nothing worked. I rebooted and still went right to black screen. I can get into recovery mode but I can't figure out what's wrong with the computer. Can someone give me a hint. My father is very good with ubuntu but he said that he would just reload the os on it. But I really don't want to go thru that process all over again.

When I choose to hibernate, the computer starts to do so, and powers off, and almost immediately it wakes up and comes back to the locked screen. I am using 32 bit version. Hibernate used to work properly on Hardy. I checked that my swap space is more than twice my RAM size.

The CD would mount regardless of whether the screen was locked or not. Since upgrading to 11.04, the CD will only mount when the screen is unlocked.Whilst I can appreciate the security benefits of this (if it is indeed intended and not a bug), is there a way to be able to enable discs to be mounted automatically, whether the screen is locked or not

That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I've been running Ubuntu Maverick as a fresh install since release, and for the last 2 days, I'm having to log in twice! This is only on a locked screen, not on reboot or switch users. After the first login, I see the desktop for a second, then the screen goes blank. I wiggle the mouse and the login screen is there again. The 2nd login goes as normal.
I have gradually been installing things as I need them over the week since install, but I can't pin it down to any of those. It's getting pretty annoying when the screen saver kicks in!
Ubuntu 9.04 works fine, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx without problems, it runs fine but after a while the screen starts flashing and the only way out is to reboot with ctrl-alt-del. First of all I get a pale purple screen with blocks of random colour in the middle then it goes on to flashing between two screens. In one the top half of the screen is vertical black and white stripes and the bottom half is black, in the other it is a terminal screen with this distributed across it:

On the latest occasion the text was "could not write bytes: Broken pipe" repeated all over the screen, followed by "checking battery state".
When I first started using Fedora 10 I had a bit of a play with the "Leave Message" button that appears when you lock the screen. After you type the message and click save, the next time the user logged in the messages would pop up.
Ever since Fedora 12, when I leave a test message, after I log in nothing pops up. This happens on two different computers so I don't think its an obscure hardware problem.

Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. View 5 Replies View RelatedI started a remote VNC connection from my Windows pc to my Ubuntu desktop, got presented with the Ubuntu login screen. Entered my password and accidently clicked the "Switch user" key instead of "Unlock".
The login panel became grey and now I cant do anything (I guess its because there is no other user). When I exit and enter through VNC I allways come back at the same grey screen (see screenshot below).
Is there any way of bypassing this and unlock my ubuntu desktop?

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
yesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.

When I try to login with my username, the one I created when I installed the OS, it seems to try to login but almost immediately kicks back to the login screen. No authentication error it just seems to just logout? The only change I made since last successful login was to add ". .alias" to the .profile file - the only entries in the .alias file are comments and "alias" commands. I have one other username but it is not in the sudo's list of users so I can not change anything in the master login.
