Today I've found out that I cannot authenticate and use my ubuntu 10.10 partition as it doesn't recognize my password! The password is correct, I also tried to change the username in "root" but nothing changes. When I write it, it shows for some istants a black screen with words in it (so quickly that it's not easy to read) and then it shows me again the form to access.
View 5 RepliesI tried to change my password through the Users and Groups dialogue, and now neither the old one nor the new one work. I tried to do it once, and it didn't do anything (the password was still my old password), then the second time I did it, when I went to save the configuration it wouldn't take my new password or my old one. Now I can't authenticate for anything.
A wicked backdoor I've noticed is that going into recovery mode offers you a root console without authentication. (Awesome, Linux, secure as all ****, seriously.) Is there any way to use this to set my user password without needing to authenticate?
i recently switched to ubuntu 9.10 from win vista, i am having a problem... in ubuntu when ever i do any changes it asks me for my password, i know that its for my own PC's securiety but now i am really annoyed with this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI may be a beginner to Ubuntu 10.10, but I'm fairly certain that this is weird: I have had no trouble logging into my Ubuntu 10.10 netbook until this morning. Now I am unable to get past the login screen. It says that there is an Authentication Failure, which is bogus. Not only should the password work, but it does in the Terminal. I am able to login to the terminal and gain root access.
I can even change my unix password, but no matter what I try I can't get to my desktop. I did run into a major issue with a frozen program. Rather than reboot, I tried to close it using the kill command. What ended up happening was that all that remained was my wallpaper, probably a bad move on my part, but I'm a rookie. I think I killed all running applications. This happened last night... so probably related.

Installing Debian 6.0.2.1 amd64 on a Dell Optiplex 740.
The default install (simple graphical) works OK. But when I install "graphical expert", the same root password seems to be OK during the install, but doesn't work when the system comes up.
A. I have used a very short pw. It worked before.
B. The root pw is the same as the user pw. It worked before.
I am installing from CD and from DVD, both downloaded and burned as iso. In both cases, I asked for "graphical desktop" and "standard utilities", no servers, no laptop, no SQL.

I have users that need to access our HTTP intranet from outside locations. Those locations will have dynamic IP addresses most of the time, so I can't just "allow from [ip]" in my Apache proxy configuration. Originally we considered a VPN, but determined that a VPN will be overkill to access just an internal website, since we do not want external users to have permission to the rest of the network, only the website.I currently have it working over HTTPS with basic authentication against an internal LDAP server, but I want a little more security for such an important website.

Have dual boot winXP, FC6 computer. Clobbered something so FC6 does not boot. Am trying Ubuntu 9.10 CD; tried first to run from CD- but it asks for username and password, will not accept blanks nor my winxp values- keeps 'failing to authenticate'. So I did an install in new partition beyond linux fc6. It finally lets me log in, giving a small text window. How to get to desktop, and is there a way to get to my old home files in linux fc6 in native linux partition?

However, strangely, for last few days whenever I access the vista partition I don't need to type the password. The partition is just mounted and I can access the files. I would like to know the reasons and if possible to get back the previous situation (needing password to access the vista partition).

This seems insecure to me and was wondering if someone else came across this. I thought I saw this topic discussed before but I can not seem to find it now. Is this a bug or a new unpleasant feature?I don't think it makes a difference but I do have a separate encrypted home partition on this fresh install. I have also done two fresh installs. (Well three...once testing out KDE but didn't try the Win partition. )

I opened the Disc Utility (Palimpsest) under System>Administration and was amazed that it looks like it will let me delete partitions on my hard drive, and without even asking for a password. This seems like an enormous security oversight, what am I missing here? Is there a bug filed for this?
Also related, why does Ubuntu allow a user to disable startup applications without requiring a password?
It appears that Lucid has done away with the gksu prompt that used to greet you when you try to mount a partition. Is there any known way of restoring this? I have a number of partitions which I would rather have protected by a password (even though I know that booting a live cd will give anyone access to any mountable partition, no questions asked). I've had a quick look in gconf and found nothing that looks like it would control this behaviour, but it's quite likely that I overlooked something.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've created a /tmp partition on a server that I would like to encrypt in a fashion that doesn't require a password to be entered on boot because this server is in a remote data center. Storing the password on the server so that it can automatically boot would obviously defeat the purpose of encrypting in the first place. Skipping automounting is another option but I'd really like to avoid that because there are a number of other services that would have to be suspended until the /tmp partition is online.
I found this article designed for centos (HowTos/EncryptTmpSwapHome - CentOS Wiki) which seems perfect since it generates a key randomly on boot and that key is destroyed and regenerated on each successive boot. However, the script doesn't seem to work on openSUSE - it throws errors saying . /etc/init.d/functions doesn't exist, restorecon command not found, action command not found, etc. Is there an openSUSE-ish way to achieve promptless partition encryption?

I'm using an eeepc 701 it has an Atheros card and does injection. I have also tried it with backrack 4 and it works perfectly (it falsely authenticates with the ap and decrypts the wep key) I just cant seem to get it to work on ubuntu 10.4. Could it be a kernel issue? I found out that there is a bug in the new(er) kernel(s). If you use an older kernel (I used 2.6.31-14 which can be found here) and it magically works.
I have a TP-Link Atheros-based USB card: TL-WN422G. It's listed widely as being compatible, but I'm baffled if I can make it work. I'm running an ndiswrapper (XP-64) driver, and that seems to be loaded and recognizing the hardware correctly. The system can scan and correctly identify our network, and other nearby ones, but when the WPA key is entered (correctly, I've triple checked), the "Secrets" windows just keeps popping up and no IP is acquired. I've installed and tried to configure it with wpa-supplicant, all to no avail.

I'm running Lucid Lynx. When I go into synaptic package manager and try to take updates, it says it can't authenticate some of the packages, including for example linux-image 2.6.32-27-generic. What is up with this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy wireless setup was working perfectly in 10.10 but after the upgrade to 11.04 all went wrong, i can see the device yes, and I can see the networks but when I try to connect it asks to reinput the password. And if I try with Wicd it says "bad password" the thing is, the password is the same i was using in 10.10 and it cant connect to an open network either. I am a bit new at all this, but as far as I know I was using p54 drivers in 10.10. in order to make the dongle work i hat to install "linux-firmware-nonfree"... tried to reinstall it, but the same result. Tried windows drivers too with ndiswrapper, and the same result again.

I installed a few media servers to stream something to my PS3 over the weekend, but now when trying to shutdown the computer, I'm asked to authenticate with a password since other users are still logged in. I installed quite a few programs over the weekend trying to get it to work, so I can't remove a specific one. Is there a way to see which daemons are logged in under a different session? Found it. It turned out to be mythtv.

The network manager sees the network and when I click on it, a window pops up asking for authentication. I enter the passphrase, but still it will not connect. I'm using a Lenovo X61 LAPTOP (not tablet).
