I currently run Ubuntu on my desktop and have just ordered a netbook which I intend on installing Ubuntu on.I was wondering if it was possible to keep both machines completely in sync ie, same files on both (music, pictures, desktop, documents etc) same settings, same themes, same programs etc etc?

I have updated to 10.04 on my desktop and on my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop.What I would like to do is have the machines automatically synchronise working files as they change on each machine. I have found backup programs but am not sure if they will do what I need

I need some software that will provide two-way syncing between these machines:
1) Sync folders from HTPC to the laptop
As the laptop is new, all the media content I want to have on the laptop (music and photos) will be on the HTPC.
2) Backing up content from laptop to HTPC
New content (purchased music and photos) is likely to be added on the laptop initially so I'd therefore like to sync (instantly/automatically if possible) this back to the HTPC to make it available there as well.
Does anyone know of any good software to do this?
I'd originally been thinking of DropBox but, as I understand it, you have to use a DropBox folder however, on the HTPC, music and photos will be on different drives and it seems that putting symlinks inside the DropBox folder is not recommended.
This post also talks about using Ubuntu One. I think there's a Windows beta version available but does this sync between machines on a local network as I thought it was a cloud storage solution and I'm not looking to upload any content to the internet at this stage.
I can't willingly cause this to happen, it's completely random. I strongly believe it is the video card. My wife insists that it's a virus, but it's ridiculously hard to get a virus on Linux and she doesn't have anything relevant on the matter other than 'people are switching to it on Facebook, so hackers are attacking it now.'.

I installed slackware 13.1 lately to a laptop. its a toshiba satellite m40 185 if it makes any difference. In any case, and while the touchpad works flawlessly, connecting a standard USB mouse to the pc does not power up the mouse (its a microsoft notebook optical mouse) and of course the mouse pointer does not follow the mouse's moves... no clicks either.

One question is: since with the new radeon drivers the xorg.conf file can be missing altogether and X will not cry, does it make any difference to add mouse options in xorg.conf?
Continuing my thought: it must be something else. Kernel doesn't seem to be the problem. The USB subsystem works since usb mass storage devices (that's all I have sitting around) are sensed by the kernel and udev properly. Additionally, the problem persists with the huge kernel.
Before slackware, I used to run fedora on the laptop and both pointing devices worked properly, however I think fedora uses another method of setting up the X server devices..
I am using UbuntuOne (U1) with 2 computers. I connected with my desktop computer to sync with 3 of my directories (Documents, Projects and Public) and uploaded their contents. I connect to the U1 with my laptop and the Documents directory is no longer able to sync with U1. I right-click on the menu and select to Sync but it doesn't work.
The other folders have updated with no problems, just the Documents folder does not. The Documents folder in the Laptop is cleared out. I was going to sync, and then add the files already on the laptop to the directory and sync to move them up to the cloud (and thus, to download on my desktop the next time I log in).
I want to sync several directories between my laptop and desktop both at home and away from home. It seems like the tool to use for this is unison (I use rysnc for backups, but union seemed, better for this sort of thing - let me know if I'm wrong).

1) Is a reverse ssh connection the way to go? If I only wanted to do this on my home network I could just use ssh right, however in order to get around the router outside my home network the reverse ssh is necessary?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have KXstudio 64 installed, was changing the clock font and doing little, normal tweaks to the panel, pulled the edge in a little, and it just froze right there, and now the whole desktop is broken, unresponsive. Nothing works. I have yaquake terminal installed so i can access a terminal by hitting F12, and open applications that way, but no menu's, links, widgets, panel icons or anything are working at all, after rebooting, logging in as other user, nothing helps. I tried a apt-get install kdm or something like that, it didnt help tho.If the easiest thing to do is ditch the stupid buggy KDE desktop and switch to GNOME- then i'd prefer that.even while using the terminal, or applications opened thru it, it freezes periodically and i sit for a few minutes and it comes back. still no desktop tho.

When I boot up the system on the Artigo I see the initial boot sequence, the Ubuntu logo and then when it is about to go to the desktop login screen the video goes completely scrambled. I can type in my login and password and I see the screen change as if it has logged in, but it is completely scrambled.
It almost reminds me of the problems old tv's had when the screen would start flipping because it wasn't dialed in just right. If I hit ALT+CTRL+F1 it will go to the command line interface and everything looks fine. it is the newest release of Ubuntu I downloaded yesterday and I know it works because I installed to a USB drive and everything works just fine when I boot off the drive using another computer of mine.
I have corrupted my /usr/ partition. I thought I recovered my server thingies okay. The problem is with gnome desktop. It won't show the login screen and furthermore there's a lot of error in ldconfig messages -- because of the corrupted /usr/ partition.I started picking out these erring files -- using aptitude purge and the rm command if it cannot be purged...That's how I tried to clean my /usr/ corrupted partition.How do I know I managed to cleanly removed all traces of the desktop gnome? -- also how could I install the desktop again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I was doing some work (Don't worry, I didn't lose anything), and I restored a terminal I had open, and it completely froze! I couldn't do anything on the desktop, so I tried rebooting. Doing that resulted in an error when booting. It would say "bin/sh : Can't mount" or something like that (Can't quite remember) not too long after trying to start up, and it would leave me stuck with some weird terminal. The only command I know on this new terminal is reboot. What should I do?
Note that I just installed Debian two nights ago and it was working perfectly fine until last night...

I've got Ubuntu One syncing a single 25MB folder on 4 computers. On one of these computers, the ubuntuone-syncdaemon process constantly pegs the CPU, using from 50-80% long after any sync-able files have been modified and successfully synced. The process is only using 8.9MB of RAM.
Specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic
1000.8 MB RAM
Pentium 4 2.53GHz
Free disk space: 280.9 GB
System monitor shows 56.8% total RAM usage, 15.4% swap file usage.
Audio sync method. "Stretches/squeezes" the audio stream to match the timestamps, the parameter is the maximum samples per second by which the audio is changed. -async 1 is a special case where only the start of the audio stream is corrected without any later correction.Searching the net makes one believe that this command is just some sort of magic.People just put it in the line and it just works. Isn't that nice?
It says nothing about how to change the TIME the audio starts syncing. Like do I want it to start 5 seconds delayed? Or what about 5 seconds sooner?What if the audio gets more out of sync as the video goes on? Can I slip it a little at a time? What? No magic?No one mentions a file that already has badly synced audio.So what -async 1 really does is simply start the audio at the beginning of the file. I use jpilot on opensuse 11.3 64bit to sync pim data with my Palm Treo 680 via bluetooth. This worked fine until today. Now I get the following error message when I try to sync: Syncing on device bt: Press the HotSync button now dlp_ReadSysInfo error Exiting with status YNC_ERROR_PI_CONNECT Finished.
The last successfull sync was on the 20th October and today is the 24th October. I did not change any settings in jpilot or on my palm device. So I guess there must have been an update of opensuse which causes this error. But I do not now how to look up the updates during this period or how to undo them. Was there an update between the 20th and the 24th Oktober, which might affect either jpilot or bluetooth functionality?
I've discovered Firefox Sync a while ago, and it's absolutely awesome. Now of course I'd like most of my software to work this way! So is there a way to get the same behavior with Thunderbird?

When I try to ssh from my desktop to laptop I keep getting a connection refused error, doesnt matter what port I use either. For the heck of it I tried to ssh from my desktop into my desktop (that is correct, not a typo) and I got this error earlier today. Im kinda concerned.

I have a laptop and 2 desktops all running ubuntu 10.04. The desktops are slower than sh|t and I've already upgraded their memory to the highest that they'll take, they're just really old. The laptop is super fast and amazing. Is there any way to use the operating system of my laptop from either one or both of the 2 desktops? I know how to connect to my laptop from the desktop over ethernet, and once i accidentally logged in to my laptop from a desktop in the terminal, then forgot I was logged in to the laptop and entered sudo reboot and rebooted my laptop, but I'm not trying to browse it, I want to use the video of the laptop over the ethernet to the desktop, and use the desktop's video to be a second monitor, and be able to use the mouse and keyboard of either to input. Or somehow tie them all in together and combine all their memory to running a single operating system somehow?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have samba running on Ubuntu 11.04 Laptop box. I can see and access all the Win7 x64 Professional desktop shared folders from the Ubuntu box. When I try to browse the network from the Windows 7 Professional X64 Desktop file browser, the Ubuntu Laptop doesn't even show up. Both are in the same work group. Mapping the network brings similar results. Both have shared folders and drives. I can ping the Ubuntu box from the command line from Win7. I typed \192.168.1.45 (the laptop's router address) from the RUN command. It said the laptop wouldn't allow connection. Samba shares are set for "visible" & "writable." The user name is set for my access; yet no joy. I ran the Win7 trouble shooter, and it said that my $Print share folder wouldn't accept connection. I deleted that share; yet still no joy.
HOMEGROUP is the name of the Home Network on both machines. User names and passwords the same. Windows firewall disabled. Norton firewall set to allow the laptop. I don't think the firewall on Ubuntu is causing it. I installed UFW and GUFW to Ubuntu for graphical interface with networks. Opened GUFW and the "ENABLED" check box isn't. So it isn't running, is it? Everything about the firewall is default. I've never enabled it. Firewall on router disabled. Both machines access the internet. Both machines can ping the other. But Windows 7 does not see my Ubuntu laptop on my network. Also, if this may have something to do with it, when I boot up or reboot, I had a message, "Can't update .iceauthority." I've googled this to try to find a fix, and am �THINK� I fixed it. Somehow, Ubuntu changed the name of the owner of �HOME/USER� to "root/user. I repaired that. Still no joy. Can this have any coincidental effect by being related to one another?

And I want to get a tip on some software or ways of moving my movies through my local network.
The reason why I want to do it is because my laptop has an HDMI port that I can hook up to my tv and my desktop doesn't.
I know of SSH and so on, but just wondering if there's an easier/better way, maybe a way to stream the movies from my desktop without any quality loss onto the laptop?
