Ubuntu :: CD/DVD Drive Not Accessible?

Jun 13, 2011

I am a complete Linux/Ubuntu Noob and researched the issue and came up with nothing. I cannot figure out how to access my CD/DVD drive. Places >> Computer shows nothing and neither do any of the sub components. I don't know enough about the console to try to access the drive from there. Every time a user gets close to a solution (to my knowledge), contributors stop replying and the years roll on.

I have tried:

Code:
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/dev$ dir cd*
cdrom cdrw
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ cdrom@
cdrom@: command not found

Red Hat / Fedora :: IDE ROM Drive Not Accessible?

Feb 19, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12 and after booting up to Gnome, I put in my install DVD and it says no media is detected. When I view the hardware on the system, it lists my DVD drive. I had the same problem in Fedora 9. I assumed it was a bug in the system and always used my laptop to download and burn media (Fedora 11). I can't burn to empty media or read data from a readable disc.

Fedora Hardware :: 1 TB USB Drive Accessible To Just One User

Feb 27, 2010

I have a Western Digital 1TB USB Drive. It is detected, but can only be seen and accessed by the first user account that logs in after boot. If I right click "My Book" (the name of the drive) then look at permissions it says that the permissions are unknown. I looked around and could find nothing about this problem. I did find some information about udev and saw a mention that you could use it to set permissions. However when I try to input the command the terminal gives me a command unknown, then asks if I want to install udev, I say yes and am then told that udev is installed. I found the command to update udev, but it says that updates are not needed. Help I want this drive to be at least readable by all users, and it would be nice if I could allow write access only to me. I did do a "dmesg" right after I plugged this drive in

OpenSUSE Hardware :: External NTFS USB Drive Not Accessible By Windows

Aug 11, 2010

I've been using it for a couple of years, it has been mounted various ways and into various places, for the past year under Suse 11.2

Suddenly I discover that it's not accessible in Windows anymore. Drive gets an assigned letter but can't be opened. Tried on Windows 7 and Windows Xp.

This is the current fstab line:

/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Seagate_FreeAgentDesktop_3QK0A0N7-0:0-part1/home/stan/Seagatentfs-3gdefaults,locale=en_US.UTF-800

Drive is owned by the root but permissions are set for everybody.

This is ls -l line for it's mount point

drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8192 2010-07-16 21:48 Seagate

Another weird thing about it is that if I try to copy a folder into it Dolphin gives me "can't create directory" error and then hangs. If I restart Dolpin I see that the folder has been created just fine and I can copy anything into this new folder without any problems, including creating any sub-folders.

That weirdness doesn't exist if I run Dolphin as a superuser.

I would create a separate thread for this issue if there's no connection.

For now I believe something screwed up the part where Windows reads what file system it is.

Is there a way to "unscrew" it and make sure that NTFS looks ok to Windows, too?

Backing up 750 GB drive and reformatting it is not an option in the near future and I occasionally need to take the drive and plug it into friends' Windows.

Ubuntu :: Shared Folder Not Accessible?

May 7, 2010

I'm having an issue setting up users for file sharing. In Ubuntu 10.04 (which is awesome btw) I right click the file, and share it on the network. I can see it right away on other machine, and login using the main user account on the server, no problem. I get an issue when I try to login to the share using additional account I setup. I get to the login screen, and it seems to accept the username and password as being valid (it doesn't bring up the login screen again), instead it brings up a error message saying it's unable to mount the share. It seems so much like a permission issue. I don't want to grant all kinds of access for these users, what do I do?

Networking :: Internet Connection Not Accessible In Ubuntu 9.10

The version of windows being 'Windows 7'. The problem is that I'm unable to connect to the internet. I'm using LAN cord to connect to my modem. The 'Network Manager' tht the user manual talks about, is not to be found yet. When I click on the 'Network' icon on the top right portion of the panel, it shows that 'autoeth0' is connected but when I open firefox and try to open any website, the 'Server not found' comes up on the firefox window. Thus I'm not able to surf the web.

When I boot the system now and look at the computer's resources, I see the hard disk, the CD drive, and the DVD drive. However, when I place a CD or DVD in either of the drives, that drive disappears. If I place the Ubuntu CD in the drive it will boot fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Shared Folders Not Accessible After Reboot?

Apr 12, 2010

I've been flipping through distros a lot lately, trying to find which one best suits me. I like Ubuntu quite a bit.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a desktop pc and I'm having and issue with shared folders. I set up a test share by right clicking on Documents in my home folder, and clicking on Sharing Options. Then I checked the box to "Share this folder" and the box to "allow others to create and delete files in this folder". I click "Create Share" and in a new window, it prompts me for nautilus to add permissions automatically. So I allow it to do that.

Then, from a Virtualbox Ubuntu machine, I can access the share and do everything I want to do (view, create, modify files). However, once I reboot my Ubuntu 9.10 machine, that has the shared folder on it, it's no longer shared when I log in and check on it.

The sharing emblem has disappeared from the folder icon, but if I go into Sharing Options, the boxes are still checked. If I simply unshare and re-share the folder, it gets the sharing emblem again and the Ubuntu virtual box can access it again.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache -> Squirrelmail Not Accessible From Internet

May 4, 2010

I set up a mail server today. Everything works except I can't access the damn squirrelmail web interface from the internet.

I followed this guide here: [URL]

I can access http://192.168.0.50/squirrelmail just fine from a computer on my local network.

*BUT*

When I access http://mywanip/squirrelmail, i get a connection timeout.

When I access http://mywanip, I get the standard Apache "IT WORKS!" Page. (Rules out port forwarding)

According to the guide, that should allow me to access squirrelmail from the internet on my server. Its as if Squirrelmail is only available on my local interface and not on my wan interface? How do I check?

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Computers Not Accessible By Host-name

Aug 16, 2010

For some reason, all the computers on my network can't reach each other via their host names. For example, the ping command doesn't recognize host names:

Code:

$ ping file-server
PING file-server (208.68.139.89) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- file-server ping statistics ---

20 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 19152ms However, ping works fine if I use IP addresses instead. I would put the address for "file-server" in my /etc/hosts file, except for the fact that DHCP changes it's address occasionally.I attempted changing the line

send host-name "<host-name>";
in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf to
send host-name "file-server";

but to no avail.

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Persistent USB Accessible From Windows

Mar 24, 2011

I want to create a combined portable Ubuntu / USB stick. For this I intend to install Ubuntu to my 16 GB USB Drive. I am going to install some rather big programs (Matlab, Maple...) and therefor, I think the 4 GB persistent space in different startup-USB creators are to small.Because of this, I want to install Ubuntu to the USB drive, to get full functionallity. Also because of the small USB Drive size, I dont want to create two different partitions. For USB Drive use, I want to be able to save files larger then 4 GB (ie. not FAT32).

How can I create a fully functional Ubuntu USB, that can also be accessed from Windows? I understand that NTFS and Ubuntu is a bad mix, FAT32 have file size restrictions, and Windows cant accesss ext3/4.I saw someone talk about installing Ubuntu using the 'install in windows' to bypass Ubuntu-NTFS problems, but the link was broken, and I could not see how it was done. Also this [URL] talked about making the home folder accessible, but the linked site is now down.
