Ubuntu :: Broken Packages - 8.04 Crashed On Login Screen

Jun 22, 2010

So, a friend's computer, running 8.04, refused to boot for a while, so I took a look at it. It appeared to boot fine, but when I got to the login screen, it crashed when I started typing. I did a hard power-off, booted it up again, and tried to update the packages (it has been disused for a few months, and I suspected that the problems had been fixed). Synaptic told me that I would have to uninstall a bunch of packages in addition to updating, which was all fine and good, but then it crashed at the end of it's purge, and left me wondering if the system would be stable afterwards. The update manager told me that I had broken packages, but then went on updating a few of them. When I went back to synaptic, it disagreed, showing no broken packages. I tried to open Firefox, but then GNOME crashed. How do I do a mass reinstall of all of the packages, and do I do this before or after I update the packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: Updater Says Error 'Fix Broken Packages First' But No Broken Packages

Apr 24, 2010

I've been trying to fix this problem for quite a few days now and have done a lot of searching on these forums, Linux Mint Forums and some others Google lead me to and have has some success, but am now stuck.I have posted a thread on this same topic on the Linux Mint Forums, but have had no success (if you want check it out at:URL...Originally I received error messages when trying to update involving certain repositories which couldn't be accessed (because they either didn't exist or had been moved) and I hunted these down and changed or removed them.

I have done much searching, etc. and cannot find any broken packages. I have tried many many different commands which have mostly done nothing.I seem to be in a similar boat to this person: URL...

Fedora Installation :: 12 Unstable During Boot / Crashed From Starting Udev To The Login Screen?

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome. When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.

I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500

Ubuntu :: GUI Is Broken - Just Blank Screen After Login

Jan 28, 2010

Using Karma and kubuntu -single boot. When I restarted my machine, the login appeared as usual and I entered my usual password but it was not accepted . I tried several times including making sure that caps lock / num lock etc were not invoked.

I then rebooted into recovery mode and let it run its course. When I rebooted and input my login password, I can get a bit further. The login is accepted but the GUI opens with a blank wallpaper and the terminal prompt window open at the keevill@keevill-desktop.

The ls command shows the name of the files which are on the desktop but they are not visible on the GUI nor are any other icons for applications. It seems like the kubuntu GUI is broken or something. I tried uninstall and then re-install but just the same. If I am forced to re-install Ubuntu I guess this means I lose all my settings and applications will have to be all installed again ?? How can I avoid this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 9.X To 10.2 Crashed - Alloc Magic Is Broken

Aug 25, 2010

I was upgrading from 9.X (can't remember what X is) to I believe it was 10.2 (ok, this happened over a month ago and I just haven't had the time to run after it), and lost power. Obviously doesn't sound good, right? Now when I boot I get the message "alloc magic is broken at 0xaff2c150". I have no idea if this error message is indicative of the whole problem, or what, but I can't get back to my system. I would really rather not lose my work.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Crashed Upgrading The Packages

Jun 11, 2011

when my computer was upgrading the packages it crashed with like 30 seconds left. On the reboot, the login screen was blue and it didn't have any accounts listed, I had to click other and sign in. when I hit log in, it freezes at that screen, the desktop environment doesnt launch. I have to click alt + ctrl + del in order to log out.

I've tried going into system recovery, cleaning, repairing packages, and changing graphics dosnt work. Any ideas what I can do, I've tried all kinds of apt-get commands from the root terminal in recovery and dkpg commands too. Additional info: My computer has been freezing recently and I don't know what was causing it.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Ubuntu :: Following Packages Are Broken - Libmagick10

Jan 15, 2010

I've been getting the following for a few weeks now.

Code:
The following packages are BROKEN:
libmagick10
1 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 4027kB of archives. After unpacking 65.5kB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libmagick10: Depends: libdjvulibre21 (>= 3.5.20) which is a virtual package.
Depends: libgraphviz4 (>= 2.20.0) but 2.16-3ubuntu2 is installed.
Depends: libopenexr6 (>= 1.6.1) which is a virtual package.
Running Kubuntu (Hardy Heron, KDE 3.5.10)

I've tried following the suggestion aptitude offered of downgrading it, but it didn't help. I've tried removing it altogether, but some slightly important packages need it (e.g. kubuntu-desktop or dolphin). I've tried installing the missing dependencies, but they weren't in the repository.

Ubuntu Installation :: Broken Packages In Synaptic

May 7, 2010

During my recent upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04, I got a few error messages concerning the flashplugin-nonfree not installing correctly. A user named carlee helped me get flash working over on the absolute beginner forum, but I've got a related problem still unresolved.Update manager is convinced that my perfectly working flash installation is broken, and insists I update it.However, the update fails every time, telling me E: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.

Opening synaptic, I cannot select the reinstall option for the plugin. Removal and complete removal are my only options, and both give the above error. More problematic, I cannot de-select the flash plugin entirely. It MUST be part of any other package update through synaptic (if I wanted to re-install avant window navigator, for example). And since the flash removal operation fails, synaptic is effectively non-operational.How can I convince my update manager that my fully operational flash is just fine the way it is?

Ubuntu :: Repairing Broken Packages Without Internet

May 13, 2010

I forgot that Python is actually essential to Gnome and wanted to update to 3.1, and didn't realize my mistake until some of Gnome had been removed, then I Ctrl+C'd out. Now I can't even connect to the internet to repair my broken packages. I'm out of town for Mother's Day, but in the car it occured to me that I should have tried my Live CD.

As a side issue, is it alright to install more than one version of Python? I'm guessing so, so long as I keep track of which one I'm calling. I used apt-cdrom to update my sources.list appropriately so I could apt-get from the Live CD, but apt complained about locales. Now sources.list has strangely lost the cdrom line, but I'll put it back when I next boot to repair mode.

Ubuntu :: Error Message - 280 Broken Packages

Jun 10, 2010

I am new to linux (ubuntu) and I really like it, but the same day I installed ubuntu in my vaio, it asked me to install the upgrades, and after I did it there is sign in my desktop saying:

An error occurred, please run Package manager from the right click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong,
The error message was 'error BrokenCount >0. This usually means that you installed packages with unmet dependencies

So I did some research and use the package manager (it says that I have 280 broken packages) and try to fix broken packages but it did not work. I had to learn how to use the terminal and I did things like apt-get clean all or update upgrade etc but nothing works the message still there.

Ubuntu Installation :: OpenOffice And QuickStarter - Broken Packages

Feb 5, 2011

Update Manager tells me it has updates. So I close what I am doing with VirtualBox and a Windows Client and I tell the Update Manager to go ahead. But it stops, says I've got OpenOffice and QuickStarter both running. Not so, at last not to my knowledge. I try again, and it tells me I have a broken package, and to use the 'Broken' filter to find it. Where is the 'Broken' filter? And even if I work that out, what should I do about a "broken" package? So I look online. Only references to "Broken" packages are with respect to Windows. Windows is a shut down client, and VirtualBox has been shut down.

So I try the recovery mode on a reboot. This reports I have 15 broken packages, all to do with OpenOffice. I select Fix Broken Packages, and it keep stopping to tell me that OpenOffice and QuickStarter are both running, and I need to deal with that. How? A restart and effort to fix broken packages did no good. I look online again, and this time I run down where someone writes you can follow a link, and what you get there will do the trick. Only the link goes nowhere, so it has been moved or deleted.
