Jul 3, 2011My main hard disk died and I replaced it. After installing windows in a small partition in /dev/sda, I thought I will try linux mint and went for it. (I need windows to play AOE, but ubuntu is my primary OS)I didnt see the options properly or some distraction, I choose the "install alongside windows" option probably expecting it to install it in the unallocated partition next to the windows installation. I had completely forgotten my second internal drive /dev/sdb which has the backup data. Linux mint went and installed itself on that drive.
Is there a way to recover individual files from the second harddrive. Now if I boot or open it through live cd, all I see in the linux mint file systems. I want to aleast recover my CV/resume from the second drive. The second drive is a single ext4 file system The old drive is completely dead, it doesnt even get recognized when I attach it to SATA.

When trying to mount I get this error mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2 I have done some searching around but most fixes haven't worked because they are based on ext2/3 File systems and this partition is ext4. Using Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

Nov 28, 2009I recently setup a software RAID1 with two hard drives for testing. I manually unplugged one hard drive to test redundancy and it was fine. I then did the same to the second and plugged back in the first and it was fine. But when I plugged both back in it is only loading one of the mirrors instead of both. I am guessing when the mirror (failed), at least as far as the system knew it removed it from the load sequence to prevent data corruption... how do I go about re-enabling it?.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Onto Spare HD, Broke Win7 On Raid?
May 3, 2011I have a dell with win7 installed on two disks as raid0. I added a 3rd HD and installed 11.04 on to it. This boots ok but only Linux shows in the grub menu. Win7 is not there and I have no way to boot it as the installer put grub on disk0 of the raid overwriting the windows boot prog.

Aug 5, 2011On my drive I had 2 partitions for an Ubuntu 9.04 (swap, /) and one partition for Windows. I figured out that I should upgrade my Ubuntu, so I deleted the "/" partition and in its place created 2 new partitions (/, /home) .
After installing the latest Ubuntu 11.04, I realised that although I had backuped everything I needed in a 2nd disk and I could access those folders and their data from my Ubuntu 9.04, both my Windows and the 11.04 can locate neither the folders nor the data now. I have no idea why this happened (perhaps some issue with the mounting?) I have tried the trial version of Stellar Phoenix linux data recovery tool, but it cannot locate the old partitions.
Debian :: Installation Broke Raid Setup?
May 27, 2011My system includes two 120GB disks in fake raid-0 setup. Windows vista is installed on these.For Debian I bought a new 1 TB disk. My mission was to test Debian and I installed it to the new disk. The idea was to remove the disk afterwards and use windows as it was before. Everything went fine. Debian worked perfectly but when I removed the 1 TB disk from system grub will show up in boot in grub recovery mode.
Is my RAID setup now corrupted? Grub seems to be installed on the other raid disk? Did grub overwrite some raid metadata? Is there any way to recover the raid setup?

Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.

Jul 4, 2010I recently updated the kernel to the newest version(2.6.32-23-generic) using the update manager and now I am unable to boot in to my Lucid installation.
My setup is LVM on top of a RAID 0 array. My computer had been running in this configuration since Lucid was released.
The Error Code I get on Boot is to the effect of: /dev/mapper/ubuntu-os is not available.. and then I get kicked in to Busy Box.
Once in Busy Box if I try to use mdadm to mount the RAID array I get this error:
If I boot in to the live CD I can mount all of the partitions and LVM volumes, so it does not appear to be a failed drive or volume.
I have looked in the mdadm.conf, lvm config and grub config files and searched the "Google" for an answer with no-avail...
Ultimately I would like to find a solution which doesn't involve a re-installation.

On the first one I have the original HPFS/NTFFS partition (left untouched), a Linux ext4 partition for / a Linux SWAP partition and the rest of this first disk (sda) is part of a RAID 5 with the three other disks.I now have this first ext4 partion shown as full. Is there an easy way to give it more space without loosing the whole setup?I have 2TB of data on this server and everything is so fine.

Nov 16, 2010I'm currently building a Raid5 Volume Set (HW-Controller, 3 disks). After some diskussion I decided to don't use a partition since I don't see any disadvatages writing the filesystem (ext4) directly onto the device.
Because I plan to expand the volume set with 2 more hard disk drives, respectively the filesystem, to get the complete disk space available I read the ext4 manual. There is an extended Option called max-online-resize with the description:
Well, although I've searched for more details on the internet I can't find any. Primary in which case is it usefull to set this value because later resizing should be possible without to set this value. Maybe it accelerates the resizing process?
Next, I also plan to use the options stride=stride-size and stripe-width=stripe-width. Is it advisable to set these values for the final volume set (Raid5 with 5 drives) or do I have to set it for the first volume set (Raid5 with 3 drives) and then changing these values during the later resize process for the filesystem? (I personally prefer the first method).

Apr 23, 2009My friend has a DELL DIMENSION 9150 computer with 2 harddisk (250 GB each) in RAID 0 (fake raid) with Windows XP installed. There are a lot of documents and pictures installed - and no backup ever done! I have found some pages regarding recovery data from RAID 0 () but My friend have bought 2 new harddisks(WESTERN DIGITAL 2500AAJS) which is almost the same as the ones inside.
My plan:
1. copy each harddisk
2. replace original HDDs with my copies
3. try to recover
4. change RAID 0 to normal HDD in BIOS
5. reinstall Windows XP
I have some LINUX distros (DSL, SystemRescCD, UltimateBootCD on Live-CD and UBUNTU installed on one other computer) which I can use. I read about "dmraid" and then try to mounting the RAID in a UBUNTU live-CD version...
Red Hat / Fedora :: Trouble Formatting RAID 1 Array To Ext4
May 24, 2011I'm trying to install SL6 to a pair of 2TB harddisks in a RAID 1 array. The problem is that when the "Formatting" progress window that says "Creating ext4 filesystem on /dev/mapper/pdc_eahgdeafbgp1" comes up it appears to eventually freeze. It's been like that for 6 hours without the progress bar moving at least. I have another identical system that I booted up using the gparted live cd to see if I could get any more information using that. I first created a 500MB ext4 partition and mkfs.ext4 ran almost instantly. I then tried 5GB and it seemed to take maybe about a second or two and worked fine. I then jumped up to 500GB and it's been running for about 5 hours now. I'm pretty sure that I remember the creation of an ext4 filesystem occuring extremely fast even for very large partitions, but this is the first time I've played with RAID.

May 24, 2010I recently installed Fedora 12 on a system with 3 HDs, using the first hard drive for root and swap, and the other two as a RAID 1 device mounted to the folder /data. This was all set up while installing from CD. /data appeared as a folder under Filesystem in the GUI
After trashing the OS, I reinstalled from CD. I formatted only sda to recreate the OS; sdb1, sdc1, and RAID MD0 were not changed during the reinstall. When the newly built system is started up, RAID MD0 does not appear when I run fdisk -l. It does show up in the GUI when I open "Computer" as RAID-1 Drive. When I open it and authenticate as root, it then appears as RAID-1 Drive 320 GB Filesystem. I can open that and authenticate as root again to access the files that were on the initial RAID 1 device when I reinstalled. At this point MD0 is listed when fdisk -l is run, with the message "Disk /dev/md0 doesn't contain a valid partition table"I am able to mount the opened RAID-1 device to a folder, but each time I reboot the system I have to open and authenticate the RAID device twice to access the files in it. Is there a way to configure the OS to recognize this RAID 1 device as it did before I reinstalled? My goal is to recreate the RAID device without having to move the files on it to another drive.
Hardware :: Recover Data From Raid 1 Drive?
Oct 17, 2010I was using a Buffalo LinkStation Duo to store pictures and the OS in the unit failed. As far as I know, the data on the two 1 TB drives is fine, and since Buffalo uses a Linux kernel in their LinkStation and the format is xfs, it should be possible to get the data off if I can mount one of the drives on a Linux box. I've put one of the drives into an external USB enclosure and attached it to my Linux system, but I cannot get the drive to mount, probably because it is one element of a Raid 1 array.
Most of what I can find on the Web concerns setting up a new Raid array, not creating an array around a drive that already contains data. I have installed mdadm, and I'm running Mint Linux release 9 (Isadora) on an Intel box. When I run mdadm -D /dev/sdb or sdb6, the device and the partition where the data is located, it reports that the device does not appear to be an md device. I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've got around 13,000 photos on these disks that have no backup (I figured what could go wrong with mirrored copies?).
Server :: Recover Raid 5 Array + LVM2?
Jan 27, 2010I had a raid 5 + lvm 2 array and lost a disk. While it was recovering the array, the power was down and recovery stopped. When I recovered the power and start the machine the array was unable to start, it was degraded and the states were different between disks. Every disk watched the array in a different way. I put you the states:

The first part in /dev/sdc1 is the same for all the devices, I just post you the states. Another thing is tha all the devices say that there is no superblock It seems that 3 disks are "active sync" but the states of the others doesn't match between them. And /dev/sdd1 is spare, the disk I added manually at first to start the recovery process.
Software :: Mdadm Is Letting Me Down - Won't Recover My Raid
Aug 21, 2010I HAD a fedora 11 server with md RAID 1 across two 1TB SATA drives. The md0 space was set up to be an LVM PV and the single LVM VG was carved up into 5 or 6 LVs. The MB on this system died and I wound up buying a new one.
Now I want to recover the data from the RAID1 setup on the new server. However, when I attach the two 1TB drives to a new fedora 13 setup, mdadm is only able to find one of the two drives. The partition on the second drive shows "busy" during an mdadm -A -s -v to scan for md volumes.
Well, one drive should be enough since this is RAID1, right? Well, when I do a pvscan -v, the other drive shows up as a "NEW" pv not allocated to a VG. In addition, vgscan does print "Invalid metadata header checksum" when it runs but it doesn't point at any particular PV. I'm afraid to go any further with LVM since I can't afford to lose the data on this system. It is backed up offsite, but the restore will take several days and I can't afford to be down that long.
Are there any tools or techniques where I can dig deeper into what each drive, in the RAID1 pair, has right and wrong with it and pick one that I can force into a usable VG so that I can recover the data?
Ubuntu Installation :: The Ext4 File System Creation Fails On Single Partition (no Raid)
May 14, 2010I can't seem to get past step 6 of he installation of Ubuntu 10.04. I get the error: The ext4 file system creation failed... on single partition (no raid). I chose ' / ' as the mount point, and have tried with and without a swap drive. I'm installing on a Sony VAIO VGN-NS160D, and the HDD was previously formatted to NTFS. There's no other OS so I don't see any way of getting a command line to try a sudo fdisk..

Aug 20, 2009In a nutshell, our RAID 1 array was rendered broken and we were advised that core lib files were missing and the OS needed to be reloaded... a quote from our server host:"The OS is not healthy.This server will need a reinstall.
Libs are missing." This was after having replaced what we though was a faulty /dev/sdb. So they reloaded the OS (Debian 5.0.2 x86_64) on 2 FRESH drives, and installed the old /dev/sda as /dev/sdc once the reload was completed. Here's the output of /etc/fstab on the fresh install so we know what we're working with:

The one problem I see myself running into is /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 are currently in use by the new system, so I cannot mount it there. I should also note, reloading the OS is a viable option if needed as we haven't started configuring the server yet. So if we need to reinstall the OS and assign the NEW RAID arrays to something other than /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 then we can do that.
Fedora :: Boot Can't Access Ext4 Partitions On LVM Logical Volumes On RAID Array?
Feb 8, 2011i have a fedora 11 server which can't access the ext4 partitions on lvm logical volumes on a raid array during boot-up. the problem manifested itself after a failed preupgrade to fedora 12; however, i think the attempt at upgrading to fc12 might not have anything to do with the problem, since i last rebooted the server over 250 days ago (sometime soon after the last fedora 11 kernel update). prior to the last reboot, i had successfully rebooted many times (usually after kernel updates) without any problems. i'm pretty sure the fc12 upgrade attempt didn't touch any of the existing files, since it hung on the dependency checking of the fc12 packages. when i try to reboot into my existing fedora 11 installation, though, i get the following screen: (click for full size) a description of the server filesystem (partitions may be different sizes now due to the growing of logical volumes):

except he's talking about fake raid and dmraid, whereas my raid is linux software raid using mdadm. this machine is a headless server which acts as my home file, mail, and web server. it also runs mythtv with four hd tuners. i connect remotely to the server using nx or vnc to run applications directly on the server. i also run an xp professional desktop in a qemu virtual machine on the server for times when i need to use windows. so needless to say, it's a major inconvenience to have the machine down.
