I have installed the bootloader to sdb (external drive via the installer).

Apr 5, 2010I had a windows 7 professional on my computer. I tried dual booting it with ubuntu. While installing ubuntu when it asks which partition you want to install it "as it said your all data in the partition would be erased but not before you confirm" so I selected go back and aborted installation because I didn't wanted that and bang I start my system again an I get this error "no boot device found". I ran my hard disk test it say's passed so I don't think my hard disk is corrupted. I tried using windows 7 recovery disc but I guess it doesn't even detects a operating system on my laptop. I got no back up of my data. Any way to get back my data if I cant get windows back!

Fedora Installation :: F12 Upgrade - Boot Failure / No Root Device Found
Jun 1, 2010I'm a long time Linux user. Finally got around to upgrading my Fedora 11 system to Fedora 12 by using the 'preupgrade' tool. The upgrade appeared to go well (downloaded packages, rebooted into installer, etc). However, now that the upgrade is complete, I'm unable to boot my system.
Here's my configuration:
/dev/sda (80Gb)
200Mb /boot partition (ext3)
52Gb / partition (ext4 - managed as logical volume)
2Gb swap partition (managed as logical volume)
20Gb /spare partition (ext3 - managed as logical volume) .....
All worked fine under Fedora 11 for the last few months. Grub now presents me with 'Fedora' and 'Windows XP' boot options. The /boot/grub/menu.lst file is essentially the same as it was for Fedora 11, except for the different kernel versions, etc. The boot sequence shows the Fedora bubble (??) and gets about 80% full when the screen goes black and the message displayed is:
No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever
If I boot Windows, all works fine.
Am able to boot using a SystemRescueCD disk. The disks all look okay and I can mount/modify all partitions, etc. The grub menu.lst file read as follows (sorry, typed in, not copied):

Nov 21, 2010I have 2 Debian OS's and wanted to put Fedora next to it.
Install went ok, but after rebooting it says: "No root device found. Boot has failed, sleeping forever."
During install from the live CD I didn't "v" the boot (efi or something?) because I thought Grub would take care of everything.
Should I just reinstall again and choose the Fedora bootloader? Won't it mess up Grub?

Apr 16, 2011Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

Jun 28, 2011So I encountered this problem after I'd been using 10.10 for maybe 4 months: all of a sudden, after the computer had been powered down it wouldn't load my OS (ubuntu alone, no partitions)... I'd get the message "No Boot Device Found, press enter to retry." The weird thing is that I can then put in my live CD or bootable USB and it will load linux fine and THEN I can restart the computer which will allow me to get back into my OS with all my files.
Restarting is ok, but if the computer looses power like in a shut down, then it won't boot without a recovery CD...To try and solve this mysterious problem, I recently completely erased ubuntu and installed linux mint. Same problem still there.About an hour ago I completely erased and reinstalled GRUB2.

Sep 15, 2010It's been a real battle, but I am getting close.I won't go into all the details of the fight that I have had, but I've almost made it to the finish line. Here is the set up. ASUS Z8PE-D18 mother board 2 CPU, 8 Gig Ram. I recently added an OCZ Agility SSD, defined a raid 1 virtual disk on the 1 terabyte WD HDD drives, which will holds all of my user data, the SSD is for executables.The bios is set to AHCI. Windows 7 installed fine, recognizes the raid VD just fine.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 by first booting into try and mode, then opening a terminal and issuing a "sudo dmraid -ay" command. Then performing the install. I told it to install the raid components, and told it to let me specify the partitions manually. When setting up the partitions, I told it to use the free space I set aside on the SSD from the Windows 7 install as ext4 and to mount root there. Ubuntu installed just fine, grub2 comes up just fine, and Windows 7 boots with out a hitch, recognizing the mirrored partition as I indicated previously. When I tell grub to boot linux however, it pauses and I get the "no block devices found" message. It will then boot, but it does not recognize the raid array. After Ubuntu starts up I can run "dmraid -ay" and it recognizes the raid array, but shows the two component disks of the raid array as well. It will not allow the component disks to be mounted, but they show up which is annoying. (I can live with that if I have to)
I have fixed a similar problem before by setting up a dmraid script in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top ... following the instructions found at the bottom of this blog:[URL].. To recap: My problem is that after grub2 fires up Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Lucid Lynx), it pauses, and I get "no block devices found" It then boots but does not recognize the raid array untill I manually run "dmraid -ay". I've hunted around for what to do but I have not found anything. It may be some timing issue or something, but I am so tired of beating my head against this wall.

Oct 28, 2010I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.
The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:
1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

New partition is created and formatted, Grub is installed, and then... Grub is found and booted, but then I get:

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Configure X-Server - Errors "device Not Found" And "no Screens Found"
Apr 15, 2011I installed debian 4.0 (etch) on an old computer with some pickled graphics card in it, and then I upgraded the computer to one with slightly newer hardware only without the graphics card (the new one used on board graphics). I moved the hard drive from the old one to the new one but when I booted it up it failed to start the X-server and I got some errors listed for "device not found" and "no screens found".
I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" however I can't seem to find a working configuration. It seems pretty silly that when installing debian it can detect all this automatically with no problems but when it comes to changing some hardware around you are left in the dark with a complicated re-configuration process. Is there not some way to automate this? I'd rather not have to re-install everything

Jan 26, 2010I just bought an hp 6500 wireless printer, and after taking 5 minutes to set it up (amazing how easy it is to get hardware working that supported by Linux) I was happily printing...But- I haven't managed to get it to scan from my desktop pc running 9.04. Tells me no device is found. I added the printer to a laptop running 9.10, and it scanned perfectly straight away...
I've been through the Ubuntu help documentation and haven't found a solution.I think that maybe Turbo Print (for our old Canon printer) might have messed something up. I had to uninstall Turbo Print to get the printer to work (it hijacked Ubuntu's built in printing stuff).

Sep 13, 2010I installed Ubuntu 9.10 a few days ago, did the updates, surfed on the net, mounted a slave drive and read everything on it, shut down, pulled the slave out and now I can't boot.

I think way back I had to reinstall grub or something on another machine I had but I don't remember anything about it. Is that what I have to do and how? Is it because I pulled that slave drive out that this happened? I want to get some more files off the slave as I wasn't finished.

May 1, 2010The one thing that has stopped me switching over to Ubuntu was getting my scanner to work. I finally resolved this issue. Here are the set I followed to get it working. When trying to scan with XSane I would get the device not found alert. Using the sane-find-scanner command would find the scanner as a USB device. found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0851) at libusb:001:006 I amended the "rules" file for xsane /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules added the two following lines

Everything is good, but when i boot the new kernel i get "Bar 6: No parent found of for device" for 2 devices - the ethernet LAN card and the sound card. After 1 minute waiting the kernel starts booting and everything works fine (the LAN and the SOUND card too). How can i fix this and what means it exactly?
I tried with other kernel - 2.6.35 and 2.6.34
Server :: LVM 8e - Device Not Found Or Ignored By Filtering
Feb 3, 2010I have made linux raid array, named it md1 and it can be found under /dev/md1. I have created single partition (whole disk) of type LVM (8e) and it can be found under /dev/md1/md1p1.
When I run: pvcreate /dev/md1/md1p1
I get this message: Device /dev/md1/md1p1 not found (or ignored by filtering).
But if I run pvcreate /dev/md1
Everything went OK. I can create volume group and logical groups after that.
I haven't found anything specifically on net, except that partition for LVM to work should be of type 8e. Does this doesn't have to be true when we use whole disk as a VG? Should I expect any problems since this is going to be iSCSI target disk?

Sep 2, 2010I looked and have tcpdump installed on ubuntu 10.04 lts I can do a tcpdump --help and it gives the commands.I get no device found when I do tcpdump from the terminal window.my Ubuntu is having trouble looking up domains it just sits there and hangs looking up google.comI'm on a ATT 3mb DSL dry line running an asus netbook and a biostar via mobo desktop they both have trouble looking up domains right out of the DSL modem.I would try to set the DNS in ubuntu but I don't know how to do that without knowing the gateway and such. I have to get the IP of the computer, the netmask, the gateway, and the DNS for the manual setup.

After I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix (my first Ubuntu, though), I discovered that wi-fi device isn't being recognized - ifconfig says that I only have ethernet device present.Somehow rfkill list indicates, that acer-wireless is always blocked. How to unblock it? rfkill unblock 0 doesn't resolve the issue - device is still blocked.somehow 'Fn+WiFi' combination on keyboard activates/deactivates Bluetooth instead of WiFi. Can I alter the behavior of the combination to turn on/off wireless networking? I googled for a while but fruitlessly. Is it a known problem? Is there a workaround for it already? Is there any additional information (clues) I can provide to speedup the process a bit?
